Status: Private | Complete

He hadn’t even had time to sit down at his desk when the orders appeared at his desk. Reading them he sighed, having a feeling it would be a long day. He wondered for a second what working with his son would be like, if Dylan would be able to listen to his orders when on the job. He shook the thought off. His son had the makings of a good Auror, those who had worked with his training had told him as much. Hell Harry himself had told him.

He didn’t bother to sit down now, knowing there was no time to waist. Instead he just grabbed what he needed and stuffed it in his pockets before looking up at the others. “Ready?” he asked, then headed for the door.

They arrived at the scene a short while later, the Aurors greeting them looking as bothered as they were tired. “We could stay,” one of them said, glancing towards the house even as he tried to stifle a yawn. “We’ve spoken to the guy who reported it,” the other said. The one missing, it’s a ten year old girl.”

“We could stay,” the first repeated. “If you need us, sir.”

Cass shook his head, knowing that as much as this scene obviously had got to them, they were too tired to be of any help. They’d been on the night shift, and needed their sleep. “We can handle it,” he said, thanking them and sending them off before leading the group towards the house and the crime scene.

When Dylan had stopped, Eva looked up from where she was crouching and taking a blood sample with magic from her wand. The sample easily slid like water into the phial, which corked and sealed itself - only to be opened by the proper Ministry analyst.

The wizard was looking into the window of the house and Eva stood, looking in the same direction. What she saw made her wrinkle her nose in distaste. If there was an abundance of 'food', wolves never ate the full carcass. Only when food was scarce and scavengers around did they consume most and left little.

"Just take some deep breaths, yeah? You tell me if you need some time out and I won't think any less of you. The first crime scene I ever worked was a murder and I puked my guts out - and it wasn't nearly as gruesome as this," Eva assured Dylan.

Dylan shook his head, focusing on the paw prints. Hell James would never let him live it down if he needed a time out for only glimpsing what he'd have to deal with in there. Hell no.

He wondered if Jamie could handle it in there, but pushed the thought away. He'd talk to Jamie later. "I'll be fine," he said hoarsely. "You wanted pics of the paw prints?"

It was easier here. Where there were just the dirt and the paw prints and some scraps of fur. He could pretend the body on the other side of the wall didn't exist.

Eva pursed her lips, then grinned at Dylan when he crouched back down and assured her he was fine. "That's it, then lad. Stick it out," she said with approval under her breath. That was the thing about being an Auror. No matter how fucked up a thing looks and gets, you have to buck down and do your job.

"Yeah, they're all around the windows here amongst the broken glass," she said, then peered inside one of the broken windows. "Yeah, that's how they got entrance looks like. Most of the glass is inside."

There was fur stuck to a shard of glass still on the window pane and Eva took that as a sample. "Maybe one of them cut themselves, if we're lucky," she murmured.

Dylan listened, even if he didn't look up, and as she spoke he started to take pictures. Nothing he'd seen in class could have prepared him for the look of the man on the other side of the window, but the paw prints were safe, and easy. His mind started to work soon enough.

"He must have been hit as they entered, mustn't he?" he asked, looking up at her while refusing to actually get up and look again. It was etched in his mind clearly enough. "He was right in front of the window - almost as if he'd been standing in front of it."

He bit his lip. "Looking out, perhaps?"

"According to the responding Aurors, we were notified when a neighbour finally checked in on the family to see if everyone was all right. That they had heard howls in the area," Eva said, shaking her head.

"Bloody lucky they decided to stay indoors instead of checking it last night. Might have more than just this family to clean up."

She went to the other window, which had less glass left on the pane than the other. "This wolf was bigger, yeah? Probably male then."

Eva crouched down onto the ground, looking at the area under the window. "Yeah, no doubt the father was looking out the window when they came at them. Bastards," she swore.

"Hey, come here. Take a picture of this. Blood drops. Very small, like from a cut."

Dylan knew he had to get up to get the pictures, and took a moment to prepare himself before getting up. He tried not to look inside, but his eyes darted as if drawn to the body on the ground, more details etching into his memory. As he moved the mother came partly into view. An arm without hand, flesh missing from her leg.

He had an almost violent wish to throw up when he thought of where the flesh was. Photos, reminded himself. He bent down, his face pale as he took the pictures she asked for, focusing everything on the camera, on the tiny stains. Hell he was glad he wasn't James right now.

Eva looked at Dylan, noticing how pale he had become and became worried. If he threw up on their crime scene, it would contaminate it. Eva didn't say anything just yet, but was on the watch in the event that the wizard looked like he was going to gag.

"Might be from one of the wolves, or the family. I'm hoping its the former, though," Eva said as she collected the sample. "I don't think they would have exited out the window but if they had, it could be blood mixed with saliva."

She stood up, letting Dylan take the pictures they needed.

He could hear James' voice from inside as well as Peakes, even if he couldn't make out exactly what they were saying. Other voices were joining the background noise now though, and he looked up, to see reporters and curious neighbours gather just outside the wards. Photos were snapping in their direction and he frowned and snorted, again glad he wasn't James.

It was a good distraction from the nausea though.

"Where to next?" he asked, trying to ignore the sounds from the growing crowd. A few men stepped inside the wards, Ministry members obviously, talking to Cass as they did a bit away from the Reporters. He turned to look at Eva instead, waiting for her orders.

"Fucking vultures," Eva scathed, seeing the reporters and the flash of light bulbs from their cameras. That was one part of the job she hated dealing with and avoided it whenever she could. The press. "There's nothing they won't do to try and get onto a scene."

She sighed, then put her attention back to their work. Making a spell cast of a very large paw print in the dirt, Eva put it with the rest of the samples.

"Blood trail. From the door. I'll be back in a sec - I'm going to let Cass know that the vultures have arrived," she said darkly, leaving Dylan to take photos of the blood.

A moment later, her nose pinched from the stench inside Eva rejoined Dylan. "How's it going?"

"Cass is over there," Dylan called after her too late, nodding in the direction of his father, who were still talking to the newly arrived Ministry men. He shrugged as she didn't hear him, and moved to the door, starting to take photos of the grass outside. It was easier here. No chewed on bodies.

There had been someone bleeding however. This was more blood than just someone having it on their paws. No this was someone being dragged even he could see that. The trail was accompanied with bloody paw prints. The difference between the two was evident.

He looked up as she came out. "Good I think," he answered. "Someone was dragged. Someone bleeding. There is a difference between the bloody paw print and the trail here. Someone was dragged here - and it seems to run straight up that hill."

"Hell I didn't even notice he was out here," Eva muttered, shaking her head. Well, at least Cass already had taken control of that situation over there.

Focus, Eva for crying out loud

She crouched down to the blood at the door and then looked from there down the trail. "Shite, I think you're right," Eva said, then took samples of the blood. "Now why in the hell did they do that."

As soon as Dylan was done with the camera at the house, Eva suggested they continue along the trail. "Be prepared. There might be another body," she said ominously, then with her wand started to measure the trail.

Dylan bit his lip, trying to think of an answer. "It was getting close to dawn and they wanted to get away?" he suggested, though another option was looming and he preferred his own version to that. "Or maybe one of them got hurt, or- or they took someone with them."

He shuddered. "To turn into one of them." He said the last in a low voice, hoping he was wrong. Instead he prepared for another body, hoping it wouldn't be too gruesome.

Eva sighed. She knew this group. "No, they're too smart to get hurt themselves. They took someone," she said with certainty. "Hold on, lemme read the report again."

Eva scanned the initial report, and noticed a discrepancy. She bolted going inside the house once more, then came out just as quickly.

"The girl is missing," she said, taking out her wand. "Come on."

She measured the trail by meters, taking down the measurements until the reached the top of the hill. There they found wolf paw prints - and human footprints.

Eva pointed to the areas to Dylan. "Fuck me they were watching this family. This wasn't random at all," she breathed.

The idea that this was not a random act done by werewolves off the potions was to say the least disturbing. Yet he too could see the footprints. Some made by shoes, some made by bare feet. Somewhere before turning, they'd taken off their shoes. They'd positioned themselves close to the village, and left with a girl.

The mere thought was nauseating. He shivered. "Why-" he stopped himself before asking the question. "What kind of beasts does that?" And by beast he didn't mean werewolf. He raised his camera, and focused on taking pictures, trying not to think of the girl they've taken. He wasn't so successful.

"How old was the girl?"

"Murdering, blood thirsty bastards," Eva replied, not exactly an answer to Dylan's question but her own opinion on the matter. She looked around while the clicking of Dylan's camera and the whoosh of the flash broke the silence on the hill.

She crouched down by Dylan, examining some of the prints. She began to make casts with her wand of the footprints.

"Dunno. But, I'm wagering she was younger than fourteen for them to be able to carry her off like this. Or she was a very petite girl." Eva sighed, shaking her head. "Sonofabitch," she swore, just at the whole situation in general.

"You got everything? The trail doesn't end yet," she told Dylan, pointing to the direction where it continued.
