RP: Gathering evidence
Who: Cass, Ignatius, Eva, James, Dylan
Where: Mould-on-the-Wold, scene of the attack
When: September 5, 2024 (early morning and onwards)
Rating/Warnings: Likely high due to gory descriptions
Summary: The Aurors investigate the scene of the attack
Status: Private | Complete

He hadn’t even had time to sit down at his desk when the orders appeared at his desk. Reading them he sighed, having a feeling it would be a long day. He wondered for a second what working with his son would be like, if Dylan would be able to listen to his orders when on the job. He shook the thought off. His son had the makings of a good Auror, those who had worked with his training had told him as much. Hell Harry himself had told him.

He didn’t bother to sit down now, knowing there was no time to waist. Instead he just grabbed what he needed and stuffed it in his pockets before looking up at the others. “Ready?” he asked, then headed for the door.

They arrived at the scene a short while later, the Aurors greeting them looking as bothered as they were tired. “We could stay,” one of them said, glancing towards the house even as he tried to stifle a yawn. “We’ve spoken to the guy who reported it,” the other said. The one missing, it’s a ten year old girl.”

“We could stay,” the first repeated. “If you need us, sir.”

Cass shook his head, knowing that as much as this scene obviously had got to them, they were too tired to be of any help. They’d been on the night shift, and needed their sleep. “We can handle it,” he said, thanking them and sending them off before leading the group towards the house and the crime scene.

Ignatius had received his orders and prepared immediately, pocketing his wand and picking up a wizarding camera as well as parchment and quill to note details. It was unlikely to be a pleasant crime scene - although crime scenes rarely could be described as nice - and he would need his wits about him to search for evidence.

Apparating to the scene with the rest of the team, he nodded to the Aurors on patrol, noting that they looked exhausted.

"How do you want to do this?" he asked Cass. He didn't think that the werewolves responsible would ever be caught but they had their jobs to do regardless.

Cass looked at the area around the house, then back at Ignatius. "H- Mr Potter was clear enough," he said. "You head the inside investigation, Small takes the outside one. You both report to me and I'll move between the two of you and make sure you have what you need to do your job. I'll also handle the onslaught once that arrives, both in terms of reporters and staff." He had no doubt the reporters would be there like vultures before too long.

Turning to Dylan and James, he tried not to smile. "You can move between the two scenes with me if you want, or choose one location and work there. Just make sure you don't do more than you can handle."

"James if you want to stay inside once the media arrives, feel free to as long as you make yourself useful."

James threw a look at Dylan, deciding where to go without even speaking, but then the choice was basically made for him. He hated that who he was dictated what he should do, but he also knew that there'd be chaos once the press arrived. In fact, he probably knew it better than anyone else.

"I'll go inside." He stopped for a moment and then turned to Cass. "But if they get too annoying with questions, I can come out. It'll give them something else to talk about other than the crime scene." They'd talk anyway. It was much easier to do in on his term and gain some advantage from it.

He smiled at his friend. Dylan'd bitch so much about having to work with Cass all day long, but that would wait for later; they had a job to do now. James followed Peakes toward the house.

"Probably best," Ignatius said as him and James walked away from the scene. "Let the other two field the questions. The quicker we can do this, the quicker we can get away and the less time the reporters will have to hound us for details."

He pushed the door open, noting the blood on the floor and the stench of death. Before they went into the main room, he turned to look at James. "If you need to be sick, use the back door to go outside so the members of the press don't see you. This isn't going to be pretty and you don't have to pretend to be brave. Just try and remain detached if you can, it helps."

Ignatius turned back and walked into the room, pulling the wizarding camera out. It was carnage, blood and guts littering the floor. "Jesus Christ," he muttered, surveying the scene. He handed James the camera. "Take pictures of everything before we start to touch or cast spells on things. I want it all accounted for so we don't have to come back to re-do this."

James snorted. He might have not dealt with real crime scenes, but he'd dealt with the press before. "It doesn't work that way. They always find the time and the way to get to you even when they shouldn't."

He followed Peakes, eager to get to work, but as soon as he took in the scene, he couldn't move. Peakes' voice drowned against the drumming in his ears. He closed his eyes. He wouldn't throw up, he wouldn't get sick, his father went after Voldemort at eleven, he wouldn't embarrass him by getting sick on his first scene.

Taking a deep breath, he opened his eyes again. He saw Peakes was handing the camera. He didn't know how long the man had been trying to get his attention. He grabbed the camera. "Pictures, I got it." Not that he would need pictures to remember this. It'd be forever stuck in his head.

Ignatius watched James carefully, noting how pale he looked. He remembered his own crime scene and how sick he had felt looking at dead - no, mutilated - bodies.

"Listen," he said, looking at James. "You want to be sick? There's a bathroom just off the hallway," He remembered seeing it as they had walked in. "There's no shame in it. We're lucky the windows were broken or it would stink in here."

He got out the quill and parchment, making notes on the scene. He would wait until James had taken pictures before going near the three bodies. This was a baptism of fire for the trainee Auror but Ignatius didn't think that James would fail if he was at all like his father. "The press aren't coming in here- Trust me on that one. Now do your job."

James shook his head. "I'm fine," he said stubbornly. He refused to be sick in front of Peakes or anyone else for that matter. He could be sick when he was home by himself.

He started to take pictures. He went at it methodically, covering every stain, before moving onto the next one. It was easier this way, thinking about stains as opposed to dead people.

"They might not come in here, they'll find a way to talk to me, even if they have to follow me home." That had happened quite often after he had joined the Auror department. "It's just easier for me to go out and let them forget about the crime scene," he said as he continued to make his way through the house.

"Of course you are," Ignatius shook his head but moved over to the window and took empty vials out of his robes. He used his wand to transfer some of the blood-stained glass shards still in the window into them, adding the few strands of fur he saw too. He didn't know if they would be able to identify the wizard or witch through it but they had to do their job regardless.

"Do you not have wards? Can you not Apparate directly in?" He didn't envy James's famous family. He had never had family of his own which was perhaps why he couldn't sympathise hugely with the press coverage of the Potters. "They should leave you alone. In the Muggle world a restraining order goes a long way to keeping reporters at bay."

He walked over to the father and wrote down what he saw, noticing the bite marks and the flesh missing. Flesh that wolves had eaten. "Come here when you're done with the pictures. Tell me how many different bite marks you see, how many different sets of teeth- On all the bodies. We need to identify how many wolves there were if possible."

James glared at Peakes' sarcastic remark. What else was he supposed to do? Get sick like some newcomer? However, for once, talking about the press was easier.

"Of course I do, but if they never see me, then they try to get into the house, or talk to friends, follow me to restaurants and pubs. It's much easier to have them think that they are catching me while I'm not paying attention, say something and be done for a few days." James snorted. "I doubt anything would get them to leave us alone. Hogwarts was the only place they couldn't enter."

James put the camera down, and moved closer. The stench of blood and piss made him want to gag again, but he tried to focus on Peakes' questions. There was no way to determine the bite marks without getting closer and he crouched down. He could do this, focus on the job. "I can make out three, but-" There was too much damage, teeth marks on top of each other. He turned his head to look at the other man. "There's probably more but you'd need magic to trace all of them. There's too much flesh missing."

As soon as she had been called in by Harry from home, Eva had expected the type of carnage that she and the others would face. Her previous experience working within a group that was no longer together taught her more about werewolves than Harry would know.

When she got to the scene, the urge to transform into her falcon form and circle above was so great that she had to take a moment to gather herself. Eva was an Auror now. That's all. She had to work within Harry and the Lead Auror's instructions.

Cass had given out the instructions and led James and Ignatius inside, leaving Dylan and her to work the outside.

"Gods, what a fucking mess yeah?" she murmured to Dylan. She handed him the camera for pictures. "You take the pictures and I'll collect the samples and we'll both try and piece what the bloody hell went on."

Dylan had to curb the frown at the idea of being where his father was all day, and was therefore rather glad when Eva handed him a camera. Being with her was better than him, and so he nodded and took the camera.

"Where do we start?" he asked, looking towards the house, then along the bloodstains visible in the grass. He couldn't see much of them from here but the parts he saw made it seem like something or someone covered in blood had been dragged. He could be wrong though.

She had been itching to tell Cass that she should be the one inside since she had more experience than James or Ignatius about this type of scene, but Eva knew it would be questioned and they both didn't have time for that. Besides, Harry would need them to process this and get things into the Ministry as quickly as possible.

"Start from the house and outwards. We'll work the perimeter of the house since that's the place where the murders happened and go from there. I want pictures of everything, even a spot of blood on a blade of grass."

Eva gathered a few phials for sample taking and led Dylan to the front entrance of the house. "Bloody fucking hell will you get all these paw prints?" she whispered in awe, shaking her head. "There must have been four or five of them."

Dylan nodded, following her towards the house, camera in hand. He was intending to look where she was, and to take pictures of the paw prints she'd mentioned, but as she went on, he found himself instead frozen at the spot, not listening as he saw through the broken window, a man - well what was left of a man - just lying there.

Taking a step back, he had to fight to close his eyes, forcing himself not to faint like some little girl. Or throw up. Just the idea that there were more dead - not just dead that man had looked...

Fuck he didn't even want to think of it but there were pieces of him missing. He shuddered. Taking several deep breaths, his head bent down before he hoped his eyes again. This time he crouched, getting closer to the paw prints and blocking the view of the man.

He had wanted to go inside. Right now he wasn't envious of James for being there.

When Dylan had stopped, Eva looked up from where she was crouching and taking a blood sample with magic from her wand. The sample easily slid like water into the phial, which corked and sealed itself - only to be opened by the proper Ministry analyst.

The wizard was looking into the window of the house and Eva stood, looking in the same direction. What she saw made her wrinkle her nose in distaste. If there was an abundance of 'food', wolves never ate the full carcass. Only when food was scarce and scavengers around did they consume most and left little.

"Just take some deep breaths, yeah? You tell me if you need some time out and I won't think any less of you. The first crime scene I ever worked was a murder and I puked my guts out - and it wasn't nearly as gruesome as this," Eva assured Dylan.

Dylan shook his head, focusing on the paw prints. Hell James would never let him live it down if he needed a time out for only glimpsing what he'd have to deal with in there. Hell no.

He wondered if Jamie could handle it in there, but pushed the thought away. He'd talk to Jamie later. "I'll be fine," he said hoarsely. "You wanted pics of the paw prints?"

It was easier here. Where there were just the dirt and the paw prints and some scraps of fur. He could pretend the body on the other side of the wall didn't exist.

Eva pursed her lips, then grinned at Dylan when he crouched back down and assured her he was fine. "That's it, then lad. Stick it out," she said with approval under her breath. That was the thing about being an Auror. No matter how fucked up a thing looks and gets, you have to buck down and do your job.

"Yeah, they're all around the windows here amongst the broken glass," she said, then peered inside one of the broken windows. "Yeah, that's how they got entrance looks like. Most of the glass is inside."

There was fur stuck to a shard of glass still on the window pane and Eva took that as a sample. "Maybe one of them cut themselves, if we're lucky," she murmured.

Dylan listened, even if he didn't look up, and as she spoke he started to take pictures. Nothing he'd seen in class could have prepared him for the look of the man on the other side of the window, but the paw prints were safe, and easy. His mind started to work soon enough.

"He must have been hit as they entered, mustn't he?" he asked, looking up at her while refusing to actually get up and look again. It was etched in his mind clearly enough. "He was right in front of the window - almost as if he'd been standing in front of it."

He bit his lip. "Looking out, perhaps?"

"According to the responding Aurors, we were notified when a neighbour finally checked in on the family to see if everyone was all right. That they had heard howls in the area," Eva said, shaking her head.

"Bloody lucky they decided to stay indoors instead of checking it last night. Might have more than just this family to clean up."

She went to the other window, which had less glass left on the pane than the other. "This wolf was bigger, yeah? Probably male then."

Eva crouched down onto the ground, looking at the area under the window. "Yeah, no doubt the father was looking out the window when they came at them. Bastards," she swore.

"Hey, come here. Take a picture of this. Blood drops. Very small, like from a cut."

Dylan suddenly felt a fresh waive of nausea come over him as she spoke. "If she was younger than fourteen she would be younger than eleven - or she'd be at Hogwarts," he said looking up. "It's either ten possibly just turned eleven or over 17, more likely over 18 as very few leave Hogwarts before their NEWTs."

He nodded, as she asked him if he was ready, looking around the scene again. "Yes. Let's go find her."

"Not necessarily," Eva replied. "If she was a squib, she wouldn't be at Hogwarts at all, yeah?" She looked at Dylan. "But I doubt very much this was a full grown adolescent. This was a child or there would have been more of a struggle in the trail. A bigger trail of blood too."

Eva stood and began to put the evidence they collected, then continued to follow the blood trail leading away from the main scene.

He had to admit he'd not thought of that option, but nevertheless he seemed to be right when she pointed out the small amounts of blood and struggle.

He filed away the thought though, and knew he was unlikely to make the same mistake twice. Next time he'd look at the evidence before making the conclusion.

Following her, his camera went warm. The blood trail was still clear, and being busy photographing it made it easier not to consider that it was made by someone dragging a small child - in all likelihood in their mouths as werewolves didn't have hands. As they reached the river the trail stopped though, and there was suddenly nothing more to photograph.

He let the camera drop, looking around. There was no more blood, nothing dropped, no more tracks other than the ones on the bank of the river. He leaned over and looked into the water. It was shallow enough that he'd easily walk there as a Border Collie. Werewolves were quite a bit larger. "They went into the river?" he asked, though he was fairly certain that this time, his conclusion was based on fairly strong evidence. They'd taken the girl and pulled her with them into the river then walked either upstream or downstream to make sure not to leave any tracks.

The question was for how long, and if they were going to find any trails of them further up or down the river.

"Possibly. But if these were wizards that had been turned - were did they put their wands? There must be a meeting spot nearby," Eva said, biting her lip as she looked at the trail that dropped into the river.

Deciding on something, Eva put down her evidence bag. "You can transform, yeah?"

Dylan looked up at the question, at first confused what she meant before he realised that of course people at the department would keep track of who was a registered Animagus.

"Yeah," he answered, following her trail of thought. "Question is which direction to go. They're probably too far away for me to pick up the scent by now." He looked in both directions, but there was nothing to indicate which direction they would have taken. "Downstream," he then said. "The scent would carry better if they went upstream, even if it's not a big difference to a skilled tracking dog. They'd know, and go downstream."

"Downstream. Exactly," Eva replied, echoing Dylan's thoughts. She gave him a confident and impressed grin. "I have a feeling we'll find where they put their wands and clothing, if they had them and if so then we have a bit more to process than just a cold trail."

She transfigured her evidence bag into a bush by the river so no one would take it, then turned to Dylan.

"Meet me back here in ten? I'm going to get a bird's eye view of things. Just be careful, yeah? Your father will use me as pillow stuffing if you got hurt on my supervision." Eva gave Dylan a cheeky grin, then transformed into her falcon form and flew off.

He'd realised he should probably have a better grip on who was Animagus in the department than he had when he saw her transform, but didn't waste any longer time thinking about it. Transforming, he sniffed the air, then set off downstream next to the river.

He moved fast, checking both sides of the river as he ran, trying to find some sign of the werewolves. After five minutes, however, he'd found nothing, and a sneaking suspicion settled on him. He halted, examining the area closer then turned to run back, hoping Eva had been able to cover a larger area.
