Status: Private | Complete

He hadn’t even had time to sit down at his desk when the orders appeared at his desk. Reading them he sighed, having a feeling it would be a long day. He wondered for a second what working with his son would be like, if Dylan would be able to listen to his orders when on the job. He shook the thought off. His son had the makings of a good Auror, those who had worked with his training had told him as much. Hell Harry himself had told him.

He didn’t bother to sit down now, knowing there was no time to waist. Instead he just grabbed what he needed and stuffed it in his pockets before looking up at the others. “Ready?” he asked, then headed for the door.

They arrived at the scene a short while later, the Aurors greeting them looking as bothered as they were tired. “We could stay,” one of them said, glancing towards the house even as he tried to stifle a yawn. “We’ve spoken to the guy who reported it,” the other said. The one missing, it’s a ten year old girl.”

“We could stay,” the first repeated. “If you need us, sir.”

Cass shook his head, knowing that as much as this scene obviously had got to them, they were too tired to be of any help. They’d been on the night shift, and needed their sleep. “We can handle it,” he said, thanking them and sending them off before leading the group towards the house and the crime scene.

Ignatius looked around the house as James took samples of the stains. He knew a lot of Aurors didn't let trainees touch the crime scenes but he was a big believer in involving them and letting them do most of the work. It was the only way to learn without feeling daunted.

It was also the only way to cope with the scene in front of them.

"It also probably means that if they were planning this, they would have gotten their potions from somebody who didn't know them or used somebody else to get it for them. They wouldn't want to leave a trail or they wouldn't if they were smart," he replied. "We won't know any more about that until we check with Eva and Dylan."

Ignatius nodded, a gut feeling telling him that the girl wouldn't be making her way to her aunt or uncle's house any time soon. "More of a 'never going to happen' but either way the family need to be informed. They won't find out about this through the Prophet."

"But we still need to check." Which would be a drag, but then criminals made mistakes, because let's face it, they weren't the smartest people in the world, or they'd find better ways to live their lives.

James started looking around, and then he thought of his grandmother and went straight for the kitchen. He opened and closed drawers until he found what he was looking for.

He went back to the other room. "Has to be hers. Look at the handwriting." He flipped it open. On the first page, out of any alphabetical order there were a list of names. "These have to be family members."

"But we still need to check. Isn't being an Auror fun?" he asked sarcastically as he checked they had everything. "We need to arrange for the bodies to be bagged up and taken to St Mungo's to be examined and analysed."

He looked at the book and nodded. "Looks like it. One second though," He summoned a child's book from the bookcase and opened it. Ignatius didn't know why but children often seemed to write their names in the book, as if claiming them for life. "The last name matches so some of these must be relations to the father. We'll take it with us."

"Lots of fun," he said looking at the bodies again. It was easier to think of them as cases instead of people or the urge to vomit returned with a vengeance.

He sighed, a little self-conscious. "Do you want me to wait here for the mediwizards? I can stay out of sight, or- I can probably distract the press for a while."

"I think you've seen enough. You've done well here today," he said honestly. "I want you to Apparate back to the Ministry with the evidence and start writing it up so that we can send it off to be analysed. I'll wait for the mediwizards."

Hopefully the press would think James was still inside and not think to check the Ministry. Not that Ignatius thought they'd get into the Auror offices with Harry Potter as Head Auror.

Any member of the press who tried to do that would have to be completely bloody mental.
