RP: Gathering evidence
Who: Cass, Ignatius, Eva, James, Dylan
Where: Mould-on-the-Wold, scene of the attack
When: September 5, 2024 (early morning and onwards)
Rating/Warnings: Likely high due to gory descriptions
Summary: The Aurors investigate the scene of the attack
Status: Private | Complete

He hadn’t even had time to sit down at his desk when the orders appeared at his desk. Reading them he sighed, having a feeling it would be a long day. He wondered for a second what working with his son would be like, if Dylan would be able to listen to his orders when on the job. He shook the thought off. His son had the makings of a good Auror, those who had worked with his training had told him as much. Hell Harry himself had told him.

He didn’t bother to sit down now, knowing there was no time to waist. Instead he just grabbed what he needed and stuffed it in his pockets before looking up at the others. “Ready?” he asked, then headed for the door.

They arrived at the scene a short while later, the Aurors greeting them looking as bothered as they were tired. “We could stay,” one of them said, glancing towards the house even as he tried to stifle a yawn. “We’ve spoken to the guy who reported it,” the other said. The one missing, it’s a ten year old girl.”

“We could stay,” the first repeated. “If you need us, sir.”

Cass shook his head, knowing that as much as this scene obviously had got to them, they were too tired to be of any help. They’d been on the night shift, and needed their sleep. “We can handle it,” he said, thanking them and sending them off before leading the group towards the house and the crime scene.

"Wouldn't it depends on how many there were?" James asked. "Given enough werewolves, they could have split up. She wouldn't have been much of a challenge anyway, because she was worrying about the baby."

James straightened up and looked at the pictures. Such a pretty girl and now, she'd be with savages. "Christ, she'd be luckier if she were dead." He couldn't imagine witnessing all of this and then being taken prisoner by the very people who killed her family.

"She's going to become one of them." That felt worse than anything else he had seen today.

"Yes but a pack of werewolves hunt as a pack. Their strength is in their numbers," he said, looking between the bodies before focusing on James. "I don't doubt that some did split to harass the mother but this man's injuries are worse. I'd say he took the brunt to begin with."

Ignatius nodded, his mouth a grim line. He hoped a half-mad werewolf wouldn't turn up at Hogwarts in the next few years but he couldn't and wouldn't be sure of it. "She would but she isn't. Now think... What do they want to turn her for?"

"If they didn't split up, why didn't she grab the child and leave? She could have Apparated away and save herself." It made no sense to him, unless they had gone after her at the same time.

"Because they are sick fucks," he answered without having to think about it, although he was sure that the man was going somewhere with that. "Who cares why? We need to find her and get it away from them before she's so fucked in the head that she becomes on of them." He looked at the scene again. "You don't really expect rational thinking from someone that does this, do you? They are insane."

"She could have Apparated but would she have splinched herself and her children? Besides," He looked at the woman's body again and felt revulsion roll in his stomach. "Her wand hand is missing. Look. Might be you're right. They might have eaten him first but made sure she was unable to escape."

He shook his head, staring at the younger man. "We care why," he told James. "We care why because if we can figure out a pattern or a reason, it might help us find her," He shrugged. "They are insane but they might mean to turn pre-Hogwarts students to turn others at school. We need to know if it was a random attack or not."

"They could have put her back together," he muttered. He might not have the experience, but there had to be a reason why she hadn't left. Nothing else made sense.

James looked at the other man. He knew that it wasn't his place to tell a senior Auror what was what, but that was the most idiotic thing he'd heard yet. He wondered in how much shit he'd get if he told the other Auror how stupid it sounded. "They are still insane. We know who the girl is, and it's not like she will be allowed at Hogwarts without careful control. The same would apply to any new kidnapping."

"They could," he agreed, deciding that James had more aptitude than some of his other trainees. Some of them were that thick that Ignatius didn't know how they'd been accepted into training in the first place. It was proof enough that academics sometimes meant fuck all. "However she might have been too petrified to even think of fleeing. Fear does strange things to people. You've heard of fight or flight? Judging from the wand hand, she might have tried to fight."

Ignatius allowed himself a small smile when James looked at him incredulously. "Good. You're thinking," he said. "So tell me what the next stage is. How would you find a pack of werewolves when they only transform once a month and may or may not be registered with the Ministry?"

Even with the grim scene around them, James couldn't help but grin at the statement. "She must have been a Gryffindor, then." However, he could see how she would have stayed to protect her family. It was stupid, but he did understand that instinct to step in front of anything to save someone you love.

James sighed. "Let's see. The logical assumption would be that they aren't registered, but there might be a semi sane one amongst them, so that's not a given. This seems too-" Brutal, gory, sickening, he thought, but it wasn't what he was getting at. "Clinical, too methodical for beasts. Most likely they were using the potion, so our best lead would be to check with both the apothecaries and illegal sources of the Wolfsbane."

Ignatius snorted, just about able to keep the smile off of his face. "That's entirely possible," he said before looking at some of the stains on the carpet. There were blood stains, urine stains and... Unidentified stains. Ignatius was fairly sure that those stains were semen but he didn't want to think about what that meant. Sick bastards. "We need to take these stains to be analysed so label them with numbers. Cut the carpet into a square around it and put it in one of these," he said, taking out clear plastic bags which could be sealed and demonstrating what he meant with a urine stain.

"I think you're right. This is too methodical with the father's throat missing and then the wand hand of the mother missing," Ignatius replied. "I doubt you'll find every illegal source of Wolfsbane. However the apothecaries are a good place to start. We need to see if they have any family. If the girl manages to get away, she will hopefully head to a familiar place."

"Okay." He found this part boring, although he understood how valuable it could be. Also after this crime scene, he wouldn't complain about things being boring for a long time.

He did as he was directed. The blood was easy to spot. It was darkening already, brown in colour. The urine was distinctive with its smell of ammonia. When he saw the third one, he cursed under his breath. He really hoped that little girl was too close to death to survive.

Under any other circumstance, James would have been thrilled about being right. "It also means that they are rational enough to make some logical decisions, which means less mistakes than a nut job would make." He stored the evidence bags, sighing. "That's a big if, isn't it? I'll look around and see if I find anything that can tell us how to get in touch with the family."

Ignatius looked around the house as James took samples of the stains. He knew a lot of Aurors didn't let trainees touch the crime scenes but he was a big believer in involving them and letting them do most of the work. It was the only way to learn without feeling daunted.

It was also the only way to cope with the scene in front of them.

"It also probably means that if they were planning this, they would have gotten their potions from somebody who didn't know them or used somebody else to get it for them. They wouldn't want to leave a trail or they wouldn't if they were smart," he replied. "We won't know any more about that until we check with Eva and Dylan."

Ignatius nodded, a gut feeling telling him that the girl wouldn't be making her way to her aunt or uncle's house any time soon. "More of a 'never going to happen' but either way the family need to be informed. They won't find out about this through the Prophet."

"But we still need to check." Which would be a drag, but then criminals made mistakes, because let's face it, they weren't the smartest people in the world, or they'd find better ways to live their lives.

James started looking around, and then he thought of his grandmother and went straight for the kitchen. He opened and closed drawers until he found what he was looking for.

He went back to the other room. "Has to be hers. Look at the handwriting." He flipped it open. On the first page, out of any alphabetical order there were a list of names. "These have to be family members."

"But we still need to check. Isn't being an Auror fun?" he asked sarcastically as he checked they had everything. "We need to arrange for the bodies to be bagged up and taken to St Mungo's to be examined and analysed."

He looked at the book and nodded. "Looks like it. One second though," He summoned a child's book from the bookcase and opened it. Ignatius didn't know why but children often seemed to write their names in the book, as if claiming them for life. "The last name matches so some of these must be relations to the father. We'll take it with us."

"Lots of fun," he said looking at the bodies again. It was easier to think of them as cases instead of people or the urge to vomit returned with a vengeance.

He sighed, a little self-conscious. "Do you want me to wait here for the mediwizards? I can stay out of sight, or- I can probably distract the press for a while."

"I think you've seen enough. You've done well here today," he said honestly. "I want you to Apparate back to the Ministry with the evidence and start writing it up so that we can send it off to be analysed. I'll wait for the mediwizards."

Hopefully the press would think James was still inside and not think to check the Ministry. Not that Ignatius thought they'd get into the Auror offices with Harry Potter as Head Auror.

Any member of the press who tried to do that would have to be completely bloody mental.
