Defence Against the Dark Arts had just finished, but instead of heading back to the common room Jade made an excuse and slipped away, taking one of the back staircases up to the seventh floor. She planned to ignore the homework Professor Dawlish had just given the class (hello, it was the WEEKEND!) in favour of working on the gossip magazine -- totally a worthier use of time.
By now Jade was used to getting the Room of Requirement to work for her, and so as she began to walk up and down the corridor she allowed her mind to wander slightly. Nothing had been posted in the Slambook for nearly FOUR WEEKS now and she couldn't help wondering what had happened to it. It was unthinkable that a professor had got hold of it, but if that wasn't the case then why the silence? There was so much potential there that she couldn't imagine anyone having it and not using it.
"I wish I had it," she muttered aloud, not even aware she was doing so, as she turned for the final time and the door appeared. Reaching for the handle, she pushed, and was surprised to find the door wouldn't open. She pushed harder -- still nothing -- then rattled the handle about slightly impatiently. The door opened outwards a crack and, puzzled, Jade wondered why that had changed. How strange.
Stranger still was the sight that greeted her when she DID open the door. It was nothing but a dusty broom cupboard, and Jade's heart sank. Had she broken the Room of Requirement? What had happened?
Her gaze dropped and suddenly she saw the book on the floor.
It took a few moments for it to sink in, then she connected her earlier thoughts about the Slambook to what the Room had turned into. "It can't be," she said breathlessly, sinking to her knees and reaching out to touch the cover reverently. "It can't be that easy."
Hoping against hope that she was right, Jade picked up the black book and laid it in her lap, holding her breath before opening it. She knew at once that this was it. The text on the page was not handwritten, but the anonymous typewritten font that had caused so much trouble -- and so much gossip. She flicked through the pages, catching glimpses of previous entries: Vent... What is your deepest secret... Rate the nungas... When did you start having sex...
Jade realised that she was trembling, and hugged the book to her chest, suddenly giddy. After months of longing, she finally had it! It was almost too overwhelming to think about what to do next, but she realised the first thing to do was to share the news with her best friend. And then...
And then she would set the Hogwarts rumour mill on fire.
