Belby: Mortui non mordant, which is Latin for "Dead Men Tell No Tales". They're not pureblood, but they ARE social climbers with a long and violently bloody East End history :P

Who says it's just the wizards that get sayings?

Smith: Ad astra per aspera (Latin: there are several different figurative ways to translate this, but I'll go with 'To the stars through hard work').

I know the Seneca quote usually goes the other way around, but it seems like everyone from NASA to the RAF to Kansas uses some variation of the norm, so I thought I'd switch it up a bit :/

Just like the Belbys - the Abercrombies are nearly pureblooded (and Scottish) so here ya go:

A lamh a' bheir 's i gheibh - "The hand that gives is the hand that gets." [Gaelic]

The Pettigrews were pureblooded, but with Mitchell's marriage (and the fact that he only had sisters), that all came to a screeching halt.

When they were pure, their family motto was:
Primum viveri deinde philosophari - Live before you philosophize [Latin]

And while I'm not sure whether the Bouchez family (the french PB side of Ellie) would count, theirs is:
Tout est pur au pur - Everything is pure to the pure [French]
