The sun light wafted through sheer curtains, with a pattern of sort left on the rug by the window. One of her Kneazles lay stretched out in the sun, obviously enjoying the warmth in the window, even though the day outside was somewhat cool. Carlotta kept her quill to her paper, working on a brief draft for the Quibbler. Xenophilius had already told her that he intended to go through it with his 'Editor's eye'. This no doubt meant that there would be something added to the paper that made no sense to anyone besides Lovegood himself. Still, it was a paper to write for, and the fact that she could write news seriously and that it would have something absurd added to it, meant only that it tended to shed doubt on the seriousness of such news as well. It was the closest she could get to subversion of the government without actually subversing. Carlotta placed the quill on the desk and glanced over at her friend. Victoria's lightly greying hair was pulled back from her face and she seemed to be absently petting Rhiannon who looked utterly content. She had enjoyed having Victoria staying with her since Mr MacLachlan's death, but the last couple of days Victoria had seemed quiet - even preoccupied - and Carlotta was not so unintuitive or unobservant to not notice that fact. For Victoria's part, she had been rather thoughtfully considering what she should do. She missed her husband, naturally, but she too had enjoyed her time spent with Carlotta - knew that her friend appreciated the company. The Manor Carlotta kept was so much larger than the small flat Victoria had been used to living in entire life. But Victoria wasn't certain that she should stay here. She'd read the papers, of course, and she and Carlotta had spoken in careful words about the politics of the current Ministry, and Victoria was beginning to realise that she felt more at home in the Muggle world than the Magical one. It was just a matter of actually telling Carlotta that this was the case. "Tea?" Carlotta asked her friend with a small smile. She had known Victoria for too long to not know that something was on Victoria's mind. The tea was an opportunity for her to share if she wished to. Not to mention that Carlotta was tired of pondering news that inevitably had to be fabricated somewhat. "That would be lovely," Victoria said with a smile, and watched Carlotta stand and within moments the house elf had brought tea, scones and cream, and a some sandwiches. Carlotta took a seat at the sofa near her friend, and poured them both tea. Tea distributed and scones passed around, she took a sip of the tea and glanced over at her oldest friend. "Lottie, I'm going to return to the Muggle world," Victoria said suddenly, placing the tea cup down on the saucer. "I suspected as much," Carlotta said. It was not particularly surprising, but Victoria's presence would still be well missed. "When do you plan on going?" "At the end of the month, I think," Victoria said. "I will miss you, but I feel as if my presence may be putting you in danger. Not to mention, that to be honest I feel more at home in the Muggle world after all these years. And I am thinking that perhaps it is time to visit relatives in France." That did surprise Carlotta and she paused a tea cup half suspended. "France?" "The Wizarding world may have closed its borders, Carlotta, but the Muggle world has not, and I do know Muggle transportation." That Carlotta knew and she was reminded that with these trials, with the Death Eaters perhaps Imperiusing the Wizengamot that perhaps it was time to relook at the possibility of getting Muggles out of the country. "I know you do Victoria, and I am not concerned for your safety at all in that regard. I was merely surprised. Will you write from France?" "Naturally," and Victoria's smile was warm as her hand reached over to cover Carlotta's. "I will miss you dearest Lottie, and if you wish to visit, I am certain we can arrange it in a way that will not lead to your arrest from the Wizengamot, so long as you are not afraid of rubbing shoulders with those dreadful Muggles." "Have you ever known me to be afraid of such a thing," Carlotta laughed archly. "I have done my best to show others they need not fear it either, but I am afraid that has not been enough. I will miss you as well." "I will stay another week yet," Victoria said. "And it is not forever." "No, not forever," and Carlotta sincerely hoped that this was true. "We will have time for a proper good-bye then." Victoria placed the cup of tea to the side and turned to regard her friend seriously. "Yes, I think we will have plenty of time for a proper good-bye." |
