Being helpful without actually being so - it was a difficult balance but Severus felt he'd achieved it. When he had seen Marius' note to the Death Eaters he'd felt as if he had to respond. When it had been Lily (and next time it very well might be), he had accidentally cut off all forms of communication in a fear that he might say too much of the right thing and lead Marius directly to her. But that had meant that after that he'd heard very little, and so this time Severus had responded quickly, in the hopes that he would be kept in the know on future such conversations. Overall, this had been an easier decision. Tell Abe, and throw out any information he could think of that could be seen as helpful without leading them directly to her. And so he had done, as any good Death Eater would do, and it was up to Aberforth to tell her, or warn her, or whatever needed to be done. If Lily's situation was anything to go by, the woman was probably already well protected, but that was not Severus' concern. He had thought for only a moment before mentioning the professional Quidditch player connection, or that it was a possibility there might be a picture. In truth, a picture would not lead them to her, particularly not one ages old and that would likely be taken in a public Quidditch arena. But more than anything else, this was practise. Practise for the possibility that someday in the near future it would be Lily. Someone whom he knew and cared about, and with stakes far higher than whether or not her not being found would reflect poorly on him. But with McCormack, his main concern was that the Order knew, that he maintained an appearance of being against the "victims" with the Death Eaters, and that he ingratiated himself enough to be aware of things in a way he had not been with Agnes. Agnes had left an empty place in his heart. It seemed as if it had been years, rather than months, since he had last spoke to her. And as he pulled the archived Daily Prophet's from the Periodicals area, his mind wandered momentarily to the last afternoon they'd spent together. If he'd known then, he would have stunned her and taken her back to Spinner's End with him, where he would have locked her up and made her stay until the danger was past. She would have hated him, but he would have lived with it as he'd frequently done when she'd tried something stupid and rash and Gryffindor and he'd stopped her. He could be more rational about McCormack, a woman he neither really knew, or particularly cared about. His actions more logical, and would be far less likely to haunt him if he failed. Agnes' death had not been his fault, and there had been nothing he could have done to stop it, yet it still haunted him at nights: He did not like to think on what Lily's death might do. In the silence of the reading room, Severus' sigh was much more noticable than it would have been in any other setting. He carefully put thoughts of Agnes and Lily aside and turned his attention back to the papers in front of him. Each would have a sports section and it was mostly likely that section that would have any information about Quidditch or the Quidditch players and surely one or the other of them would have something useful. Although it was nearly four years worth of newspapers, each year was not much larger than a normal sized book. The archived papers were protected from age and tear with a series of spells, and then charmed to be small enough that they looked nearly like doll papers. Severus started with 1979 and worked his way back to the papers that covered the cessation of Quidditch. The only reason he had connected her with Professional Quidditch at all was because he had seen conversations in the journals. Anything more recent than that point was likely to be useless, and he was certain he hadn't seen her name in the papers recently. So he started with July of 1979, and when Yaxley arrived he could pick up wherever Severus had left off. Nothing he was doing would directly lead to her death, and should he be required to take place in such an activity, then he would do so without reservations. They had been given knowledge so they could be prepared, and preparation was their responsibility: Providing just enough truth to be believed. |
