Of the Choices We are Given...
Date & Time: 23 February 2003 | Morning
Post Type: RP
Status: Closed: Complete
Character(s): Jeremiah Cornfoot, George Weasley
Location: WWW
Summary: Jeremiah confronts George.

Jeremiah was relieved to find Angelina in bed every morning when he awoke and every night when he laid his head down. She was there, yes, but part of her was gone--missing. She was uncharacteristically subdued, withdrawn. And Jeremiah could feel the anger seething just beneath the surface. Fucking George Weasley. He and Angelina had been happy, and now, they were ghosting past each other and her smile was only present half the time.

After sitting at his desk for half an hour and unable to concentrate on anything, he finally made a decision. It was time to pay George Weasley a visit. Jeremiah grabbed his cloak and wand and apparated to Diagon Alley. He found the shop easily.

A boy wearing dark make up stood behind the front counter, and Jeremiah glanced around to see if he saw George before approaching the wizard. No such luck, and he wondered if George would even be working today. "Is George here?" he asked.

Jeremiah shook his head. "No, I don't think you could help me, but thank you for the offer," he said, trying to keep his voice level. He even managed an appreciative smile at the wizard. "I am hoping to speak with George personally. Is he here today or is he out of the shop?" he asked. He wasn't sure if off the floor meant not there.

Justin gave a disappointed sigh, but managed to offer a half-smile anyway. "He's in the workroom downstairs." He glanced around the shop, finding no more customers, then gave the bloke a look.

Oh hell.

"Hang on just a minute, and I'll see if he can come up."

George looked up curiously when Justin came tripping down the stairs, and followed his bouncing shop assistant up the stairs. He headed for the fellow Justin pointed out.

"Can I help you?"

Jeremiah stared at a shelf full of candies that would make one's hair change colours, and he knew they would make Angelina laugh--especially if she slipped one to him. The thought filled him with sadness and irritation.

He turned when someone spoke to him, and his eyes found George's. He nodded once. "Morning, George. Think we could go somewhere private?" he asked.

If there was a list of people George least expected to walk into his shop, Jeremiah Cornfoot would have been in the top three. Make that top two...

He stood for a moment, then nodded. "Justin, I'll be in back. Verity's downstairs if it gets busy." The boy nodded and George led the way back into the office, holding the scarlet curtain aside for Jeremiah to go through first.

It was just courteous, plus? George wasn't turning his back on this one. "So. Private as it gets. The shop spells won't let you set a Silencer, but nobody bothers to listen. What can I do for you?"

Like he didn't know.

The sight of George turned Jeremiah's stomach in a way that surprised him. He'd never had issues with George before. In fact, he'd really liked George because he was incredibly important to Angelina--now he understood George's relationship with Angelina much better. The bloke was in love with his girlfriend. No wonder George wanted to spend all his fucking time with Angelina.

"Thank you," he said, still managing to be polite though he wasn't sure why he was even bothering. Was George telling him about the lack of a Silencer as a warning? A threat? Jeremiah touched the pocket that held his wand and then moved his hand away.

There was a chair so Jeremiah sat down. They could be civil, couldn't they? What can I do for you? The bloody absurdity of the question made Jeremiah laugh, but it was a hollow sound.

"You can tell me what exactly you think you're doing with Angelina," he said bluntly.

George sighed, then moved to lean against the edge of his desk. What he thought he was doing with Angelina.

"I guess that's more hers to say than mine," he said after a moment, folding his arms and sighing. "Angie's been my friend since we were eleven. Her moving away has been... rough."

He dragged a hand through his hair, then looked over at Cornfoot. "So we talked. About us, about you, about things. She said she wanted to think. So I've been letting her."

Jeremiah's hands clenched and released. More hers than mine. Bullshit. "Rough," he said dryly. He didn't want to be the bastard in this scenario, but George's answers were irritating him. "I'd say her leaving me was a bit rough. Of course she left because she told me she had some things to talk about. I had no idea those things were you."

He leaned forward, propping his elbows on his thighs. "You know what else was rough? Having her tell me that you kissed her." Jeremiah looked up at George who didn't appear bothered by the truth. "I trusted your relationship, and you've made a fool of me."
