In between Las Vegas and Searchlight ran route US-95, a stretch of road that was largely unremarkable once one became accustomed to the desert landscape. It was particularly useful for commuters who used towns like Boulder City and Nelson as bedroom communities and worked in Vegas. Besides the occasional accident and traffic jam, the drive was typically uneventful. The speed limit was 70 but most drivers pushed that despite the handful of speed traps set by highway patrol. A woman was sailing along in a black sedan, one hand on the wheel and a Yeti of coffee in the other. NPR issued from the radio, something about the Pacific lamprey that she was only semi paying attention to, when the pickup truck in front of her slammed suddenly on its brakes. “Shit!” She jammed her foot against her own brake pedal, the top of her thermos coming loose and spilling lukewarm brown liquid all down the front of her shirt. She had to veer off to the shoulder to avoid colliding with the vehicle and a series of angry honks filled the air behind her. The woman put the sedan in park and hopped out of the driver’s side. Others were pulling over, too. She squinted through the dust and sand that had been kicked up. Was that a horse in the road?
The pickup truck’s driver was standing by his front bumper, holding up his cell phone. It had to be some kind of prank. What had looked like a horse at first was a pure white unicorn. Or something made to look like a unicorn. Its horn was long and tapered to a sharp point, a flowing regal mane waving as it huffed and shook its head. “Are you seeing this shit?” He turned his head to look at the woman, ignoring the coffee that dripped from her white top. “I wonder how they got the horn on.” The animal stamped its foot against the hard earth. There was something shimmery in the air around it, a sort of pearlescent haze. It was beautiful...until it turned its massive head to look at them standing there. She could swear it narrowed its beady dark eyes at them, and her heart began to race anew as she took a few uncertain steps backward. Someone behind her honked again and the unicorn reared up on its hind legs. The man began to slowly lower his phone, the smile wiped from his face.
“Do you think it’s going to -- “ Her question ended in an alarmed yelp as the creature began to gallop toward them. There wasn’t any thought behind the action, just instinct. She grabbed the man by his shoulders and they toppled downward behind the open truck door. They covered their heads with their arms as the unicorn’s horn rammed into the tempered glass window, the sound of it splintering making them wince. It began to retreat and regroup for a second attempt, but their focus was split by earth-shaking footsteps coming somewhere behind them. People stuck in the pile-up began to scream, and the man chanced a look to see a giant lumbering along the highway. With shaking fingers, he tried to key in 911 when the unicorn struck again. This time, its horn pierced the glass and small blue-tinted pieces rained down over their heads.
