Michael gave the rice pilaf one more stir, and turned off the heat, replacing the lid on the saucepan. In the oven, the baking chicken smelled heavenly, redolent with spices. His belly rumbled as he wiped his hands on a kitchen towel and glanced at the clock. Almost time; Rena should be around any moment now.
Tipping up his glass, he drained the last sip of wine, and then rinsed the glass, leaving it in the sink. The salad was ready, tucked away in the fridge, and the Dutch Apple pie he'd gotten earlier at the Aurora Bakery sat on the counter.
He didn't know Rena well. He'd seen her in various places in town; that red hair was hard to miss. But he hadn't spoken more than a few words to her, mostly in passing. Eighteen was very late to have powers manifest; generally that happened with the rush of puberty. And to have them come forth in such a draamatic way, well. He was surprised SART had released her so soon, from what Taliese had told him. They were not a particularly forgiving sort, he knew, and took a moment to resent the loss of his books. But only a moment--hanging on to resentment did nothing but harm him, and so determinedly, he let it go.
He heard the doorbell, and went to answer it, pausing to turn down the volume on his CD player to more conversation-friendly levels. Opening the door, he saw her standing there, bundled against the cold, and smiled a greeting.
"Rena. I'm glad to see you. Come in before you freeze," he said, and stepped back so that she could do so.
