Word count: 571 words
Dying was taking a lot longer than Petunia would have liked. She was in her late eighties, widowed, her son and her grandchild refused to have anything to do with her. Her only visitor was her nephew, Harry. His eyes and his mannerisms, still reminded her of her late sister. In a way, Harry's visits were the cruelest thing of all. Her only visitor, the only person she could talk to, the only person that checked her out of the retirement home for a walk around the garden or an outing was her nephew that she had abused so terribly.
Today, they were sitting outside, a small cafe drinking tea. They weren't talking. Things were always awkward enough without adding words... what would they talk about? Hey remember the time I punished you for something you didn't do? Or the ten years I shoved you inside a cupboard rather than allowing you to have a room of your own? Remember all the abuse I heaped upon you, weren't those the best times. He avoided mention of his children, of his daughter, Lily Luna who was friends with her unseen for so many year grandchild.... of magic and both of them avoided the subject of his childhood.
It was almost time to go back to the home when it happened. There was a little boy, about four being guided along by a young woman, they sat down at a neighboring table and the woman helped the little boy fix his tea and allowed him a biscuit. The little boy loudly gave her a kiss on the cheek and then said, “I love you, Auntie.”
Petunia couldn't remember the last time someone had told her she was loved. It had been a long time. While she'd doted on and spoiled her son, he hadn't told her loved her without wanting to get something out of it since he was teenager... and her husband. Vernon wasn't the demonstrative type... At least not when it came to love.
They made it to the center and once the check in process was complete, Petunia stiffly said goodbye to Harry who told her that he'd back next week.
That night as Petunia lay in bed her thoughts were louder than anything around her as her life played before her.
She had been the one to reject her sister. She had been the one who'd refused to see her or talk to her who'd wanted nothing to do with Lily who had once been her closest friend. She was the one who had chosen to take in her orphaned nephew who was just a baby and treat it without love or affection, she was the one who'd allowed her son free reign in everything and never tried to get him to excel. She was the one who treated most people cruelly unless it could get her anything. She was responsible for the way her life turned out.
Wasn't her who had freaked out and nearly attacked her own grandchild for being a freak? Wasn't she the one who told Dudley that his daughter, should have been killed at birth? It was all her fault.
It was to late to change. At four am. that morning, Petunia Dursley crossed over into the after life.
