Dudley Dursley's eyes kept darting nervously towards his wife and four year old daughter. Hyacinth had wanted to dress up like a witch for Halloween and Dudley hadn't had the heart to say no.
Besides Hyacinth looked adorable in her homemade black robes, feathery pink stick (with a lot of rainbow sparkle glitter) and a long black pointed hat with a silver tiara around it. However they were going to see his parents and Dudley hoped that his parents did not react the way he feared they would.
He didn't know how to explain his mother's antiwitch behavior to a four year old girl.
Petunia opened the door smiling and grinning. He winced as her voice pitched high and she called him her little Dudley Dinkums. Then her eyes fell on his daughter. Her smile fell. Her eyes grew cold. His daughter's eyes grew round with confusion and then as Petunia began to scream, fear.
Was that how Harry felt as a child? Confusion and fear as a deranged woman yelled at him.
He was about to send his wife and child to the car, yell at his parents and then go home and spoil his girls lavishly when his mother struck. She grabbed Hyacinth's arm and attempted to drag her away. Hyacinth let out a frightened cry and then it happened.
Petunia was pushed from the open door way into his father who'd come to investigate what his mom was upset about this time.
“Go to the car,” he told his family.
Once they were away, he looked at his mother, eyes cold with rage.
“Never touch her again,” he said before turning and walking away.
“Why would we want to, she's a freak!” Petunia screamed.
He left. The family would have more fun elsewhere. His daughter was a witch. He didn't care. She was still his little princess.
Six years later, Dudley and Hyacinth found themselves at a different doorstep for a Halloween party. His cousin was beat to the door, by a hyper and exuberant ten year old girl with red hair and green eyes.
Lily Luna politely greeted him before dragging Hyacinth off.
Soon a party was in full swing. There were hordes of Weasleys, a few Longbottoms, the silver blonde hair of the Malfoys, and a bunch of people he didn't recognize.
He had a great time. He was quite fond of Luna Lovegood, who was eccentric and odd but always amusing to talk to.
He spotted his daughter, Lily Luna, Rose, and Scorpius, snacking on candy, laughing, and probably plotting mischief together. Those four children would probably rule the world someday.
Harry was sitting next to him and he suddenly found himself thinking about that Halloween night when he'd realized that his daughter was a witch.
His daughter was a witch. His cousin and his cousin's family were more his family than his own. His weight was down. He had a good job. His daughter would be going to the finest school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Magic was now an everyday part of his life and he'd never been happier.
A year later on a Halloween night, Dudley, Lily Luna (who was coming because Hyacinth refused to face this alone) and Hyacinth were back at the front step of number four Privet Drive. Petunia was dying and she'd asked to see her granddaughter to make amends.
Hyacinth and Lily Luna were holding hands as they walked into the sickroom, where the dying woman laid on the bed.
Her eyes opened and she looked at both of them. Her eyes went wide with shock as she looked at the green eyed girl.
“Lily,” Petunia gasped.
“This is my friend, Lily Luna Potter,” Hyacinth said.
The old woman smiled and greeted them both.
Rather than apologizing for that night, seven years ago, she began to tell the two girls a story of two sisters who'd once been close until the older girl had let jealousy and rage consume her for years. He'd never heard these stories and he knew that Harry knew very little about his mother's childhood.
Looking at them both, he could picture his mum and his aunt as children, and he felt a terrible sadness well up within him. There was so much loss and tragedy in a story that most had forgotten.
Petunia Dursley hugged both girls and smiled at both of them. Then she seemed to see something no one else in the room did.
“Lily Evans!” she scolded the air, “wait for me!”
Then their was silence as Petunia breathed her last, but for a moment Dudley thought that he heard the sounds of two girls laughing as they were reunited and began to play.
He hoped they were both at peace now.
