RP: This Is Not Where I Went To Sleep
Characters: Remus Lupin, Ariana & Ashley
Time/Date: 28 August 2023, mid-morning
Location: Upper corridor, Hogwarts
Warnings/Rating: PG
Summary: Remus wakes up somewhere other than his bed.
Status: Complete

Remus slowly started to surface aware on some level that something was wrong. He couldn’t imagine what that was given it was summer holidays and he didn’t have to get up any time soon. In fact the part of his brain that was awake and was feeling distinctly lazy was strongly suggesting he just go back to sleep until, say, noon. Of course, the more responsible part of his brain was appalled at the very idea and demanding he get up and do something useful. The common sense part of his brain was rather dryly pointing out that the full moon was close and he ought to get all the sleep he could before he really woke up and got cranky. And there was a tiny, half-asleep part of his brain that was suggesting that having all these voices talking in his head really wasn’t a good sign.

But it was when he rolled over that he really realised that something was terribly wrong. Because it felt like he’d just rolled over on cold stone and not his nice comfortable bed.

Remus’ eyes flew open and he was very quickly able to confirm that he was indeed lying on a cold stone floor. He scrambled to his feet and looked around wildly before realising that he was at Hogwarts. In one of the upper corridors that he’d walked along so many times, usually with James, Sirius and Peter.

He also realised that he was wearing nothing but a pair of pyjama bottoms and he started to blush furiously and hitch them up on one side so they covered the silvery bite scar on his right hip. Just because he’d finally gotten used to it enough to let it show at home didn’t mean he wanted anyone else to see it, especially someone at Hogwarts.

He swallowed and looked around. “Hello? Is anybody here?”

This had to be some kind of prank on the part of James and Sirius. If it was, he was going to yell at them first then ask how the hell they did it.

"Ari, there are some robes in the closet, s'il vous plait?" She gestured toward the one she meant and watched as the girl skipped off to go retrieve a set.

"I am not certain where to start with an explanation, and I am undoubtedly not the best person to give you one," she began softly. "My name is Ashley Legard, and I 'ave been the 'ealer 'ere for a couple of years now. Madam Pomfrey retired some time ago."

She hesitated a moment before she turned to retrieve the copy of the Prophet with the article in it, though she realized that wouldn't be the best news for him because of the cautionary note about Fenrir. So she held the paper herself as she tried to dredge up an explanation.

"This is not the year you think it is," she began. "It is August of 2023. You are in 'ogwarts as I am sure you 'ave guessed. Last weekend, there was a phenomenon of some sort. No one 'as yet found an explanation, but people 'o were formerly deceased 'ave been returning to walk among the living. There 'ave been several already 'o 'ave returned 'ere. People 'o fell in the war against Voldemort."

She offered him the paper then, reasoning it would give him an excuse to remain silent if he needed time to sort all of that out in his head. "I know it is a lot to take in, and I can answer some questions for you but I am afraid there are not many answers to be 'ad."

When Ariana returned with a set of robes, she offered them to Remus with a soft, apologetic smile.

Remus took the newspaper almost automatically, still staring at the healer with shock. This was a joke. It had to be. Somehow James and Sirius had transported him here and then roped this woman into playing along with them. Any moment now, Madam Pomfrey was going to come charging through the doors and scold them all.

Then he looked down at the paper and read the date. Then he read the article. It wasn't very coherent... but then this was the Prophet... but it was clear. He winced at the mention of Fenrir Greyback and that was actually enough to convince him that this wasn't a prank, that it was true. James and Sirius wouldn't have used Greyback. They knew who'd bitten him.

He was still standing there in stunned silence when the healer offered him the robes. He blinked at them for a moment them hurriedly shrugged them on. He felt better having more clothes on, especially as his scars were now hidden and especially since it had occurred to the less-stunned part of his brain that the healer was young and pretty.

"Uh." He swallowed. "I... I died? But... how? When?" He stumbled over to one of the beds and sat down heavily. He glanced down at the paper again and another name seared its way into his mind. "Sirius? Sirius died?"

He shook his head. "My parents? What about my parents? And... and James and Peter and Lily?"

Ashley turned to the cabinets and withdrew a calming draught. Not that he acted like he needed it right now, but he might once the shock wore off. She also made a mental note to let Professor Stirling know they may need a dose of the Wolfsbane this month after all.

She tried to think how to best answer his questions, and how much he might want to know. He'd have to know about his son. His son would have to be informed, and she realized she wasn't going to remember all of this. First things first though. She slipped her wand out to summon up her patronus, sending it down to Professor Stirling.

"I can answer what you wish to know, but I am afraid my answers may just raise more questions." She set the potion on the small table near the bed. "It is a calming draught, if you would like it later," she explained before she leaned against the wall near him.

"In 1998, there was a battle 'ere at 'ogwarts to bring down Voldemort. A lot of people were killed in that war, including you. A few others who fell in it have returned. Sirius was actually killed a few years prior, in a smaller battle that was still related to the ongoing war." Battle. Accident. But battle sounded better. "'e is actually set to return to school, I believe, on the first. 'e is sixteen, though 'e was in his thirties when he died.

"I am not sure what 'appened to your parents. James and Lily Potter were killed in 1981, though their son, 'arry, survived. Lily 'as returned, but as far as we are aware, James 'as not. They left 'er name out of the papers on purpose, I imagine," she added.

Peter ... if she'd heard of his fate, she really wasn't certain. "I do not believe Peter was back, though from what I do recall, 'e fell in the war as well, though not 'ere."

Remus set the newspaper aside and glanced at the calming draught. He didn't particularly like them that much but he supposed he ought to keep it in mind. He wasn't sure if this Healer knew what he was... though he probably ought to tell her. He hated doing that.

"1998?" he murmured. Well, that wasn't too bad, was it? He'd have been... thirty-eight. And at least he'd died doing something worthwhile. He knew about Voldemort. He was starting to raise his head and get active. Nothing big but he was definitely making his presence felt.

"Sixteen." He shook his head and gave a tiny laugh. "I'm... I'm older than him then. I'm... seventeen. I was supposed to be starting Seventh Year in a few days." Then he gaped at her. "James... and Lily? Lily Evans?" So Prongs had bagged the girl he wanted so much. He wondered how that had happened though... James had been boasting about being made Head Boy this year. He didn't even want to think about how they'd gotten themselves killed in 1981.

He sighed and shoved his hair back from his face. "If you're the Hogwarts healer then I... should probably tell you something." He ducked his head and his shoulders hunched defensively. "I... I'm a werewolf," he said glumly, hoping her reaction wouldn't be too bad.

Ashley smiled. "Oui, Lily Evans Potter. She is living now with 'er son, I believe, for the time being. The Ministry is implementing a program to 'elp people who come back find relatives if any are still living. Or 'ave come back," she added. There was the case of the Dumbledores, after all. "I imagine if you would like to finish school, it would be arranged for you to stay on 'ere."

Her smile softened slightly at his announcement. "Oui. That was made public knowledge when you taught 'ere for a year as the Defense Professor. Professor Stirling can make the ..." She trailed off. The potion wasn't invented in his time, was it? Or if it was, it was still in the first stages.

"There is a potion for the werewolves. It 'elps them to keep their minds and be calmer during the full moon, even when they are in their wolf shapes." Ash glanced to the door, and wondered when Ari had slipped out. Her brow furrowed briefly, but she let it go; the girl was quieter than a ghost most times. "We do 'ave one student who is also a werewolf. 'e is a seventh year, Ravenclaw. If you do remain on as a student, I am certain 'e would not mind showing you around. 'e runs in the forest on the full moon nights." She sort of wondered how Tristan and Remus would get along - both in and out of their fur - and she supposed they'd find out if Remus stayed.

"I... yeah. Yeah, I'd like that," Remus said. There wasn't really much else he could do, was there? His parents were dead and it sounded like most of his friends were and those that weren't, well, he couldn't ask them. It wasn't fair.

His eyes widened and he stared at Ashley. "I was a teacher? Was I a good one?" He smiled a little. He liked that idea. He'd liked the tutoring he'd done but he'd never even bothered to dream of being a teacher. He was a werewolf and that was that. His chances of getting a decent job were slim to none.

He rubbed the back of his neck. "I'd... I'd heard there was some research going in that direction but Dad couldn't find who was doing it. Someone in Europe I think. They really made it? That's... great." He wouldn't have to rely on Padfoot and Prongs. Not that he'd minded, he'd loved running with them on the full moon but there was always that worry in the back of his mind that he'd somehow get away from them and... do something bad.

"Wait," he said with surprise. "There's another werewolf as a student? And everyone knows? That's allowed now?"

"I am sure they can arrange that," she murmured and reasoned he might as well run in the forest on the full. Maybe she'd see if she could find out where Tris was supposed to go and see if he'd come here. "I imagine you will 'ave to endure questioning by the Ministry and the 'eadmaster will wish to speak with you as well," she added. "Professor Flitwick is the 'eadmaster, now," she said. "I believe 'e was teaching charms while you were in school, non?"

She chuckled softly. "I do not know, but I never 'eard anything bad about you as a professor. It was only for a year, if I recall," she added. "I am certain some of the staff 'ere 'ad you," some of them were surely that age, weren't they? "They could tell you."

Ashley nodded again at his question. "Oui, 'e does not exactly make a secret of 'is lycanthropy." Or, as far as Ashley knew, his sexual preference, but that hardly seemed appropriate to mention just then. "There are prejudices still, oui, and several parents who are just waiting for one tiny slip to bring the law down on the school to 'ave him removed, but for the most part, I believe the students accept 'im. It does not 'urt that 'e is a bit of a clown."

She hesitated again. "Would you like me to see if 'e will be willing to come back early and run with you this moon?" She reasoned there was no sense in asking Tristan if Remus would rather be alone.

Remus winced at the idea of being questioned but Ashley made it sound like something that was normal for this... if you could call apparently coming back from the dead normal. He smiled at the mention of Flitwick though. "Yeah, he was. I like him. He's a good teacher."

His eyes widened as he stared at her. "Some of the teachers..." he shook his head and actually managed a proper laugh this time. "That sounds so weird. You mean I'm younger than some of the people I taught?"

He shrugged diffidently. "It's better than what I've got... had... whatever." He chewed on his bottom lip for a moment. He didn't want to give away Sirius' secret... though if they knew his secret now, would they know Sirius and James and Peter's secrets as well. "If... if Sirius is sixteen, is he coming back to Hogwarts?" He stopped there, not quite wanting to blurt it out.

"Um... yes?" he said hesitantly. "I guess. If he's okay with that. Um, when is the full moon? It was supposed to be tonight... if tonight's still the 28th... but I can feel that it's not going to be. I don't feel... twitchy enough for it to be tonight. But I know it's soon." he looked down at the robes he was wearing and blushed. "And, um, is there any way I could get some more clothes?"

"Oui," she agreed with a soft smile. "You were actually the professor while James' son was 'ere. 'is ... third or fourth year, if I am not mistaken. And I do believe Sirius is coming back, yes."

Along with two of James' grandchildren, but she thought that might be a bit much to mention. "Would you like us to send word of your return to Sirius?" Her brow furrowed; by the time they were done with everything else and he'd rested from the moon, it would be about time for school to start up anyway, so a few days likely wouldn't matter.

Still, it would be nice for friends to at least owl one another, right? "I am certain an owl or two would not be amiss," she added with a sly grin.

"The full is ... tomorrow," she said with a nod. "We 'ave some spare uniforms and robes 'ere, but I am also certain a shopping venture could be arranged." She wondered if the Ministry would be funding that, or if they'd be pulling from Hogwarts' funds, but did it matter either way? He'd need books, too, and ink and quills and all the other things.

That was weird to consider - that he'd taught James' son. Almost as weird as thinking about James having a son in the first place. At least he didn't have to worry about that sort of thing.

"Good," he said with relief. He definitely wanted to have someone around that he knew and if they had years and years to make up, well, they'd be in the same class, wouldn't they? They wouldn't just throw them straight back into their proper years?

"I guess you're right," he said with a quick grin that definitely showed off the Marauder in him. "They wouldn't have moved the owlery."

He nodded; that made sense. He wasn't twitchy enough for it to be tonight but he was twitchy enough to know it was very soon. He shifted uncomfortably about having to take charity from someone else but... did he really have a choice? He didn't like taking other people's money but he wasn't going to be stupid either.

"Okay, shopping sounds good. I guess I needs books and stuff as well." He looked around uncertainly. "Um, so what now?"

"Now ... you should rest 'ere a bit, recover. Think up any questions or ... per'aps write a letter to Mr Black. I will 'ave to go inform the 'eadmaster and the Aurors on patrol and then you will be in their 'ands. I ... see no reason you can't simply stay 'ere until school starts. Get set up in your dorm and what 'ave you.

"We can arrange for someone to take you shopping unless you're comfortable to do so on your own. One of the professors wouldn't mind, I'm sure. That though can wait until ... you're comfortable. Settled."

She looked thoughtful. "Per'aps even they may arrange for you and Mr Black to go together. I imagine 'e will need books as well." Ashley smiled gently to Remus. She really did feel for him - for all of them who came back so far displaced. It was a sort of cruel trick, this returning to life magic. "Do you need anything else right now? Something to eat, to drink?"

Remus couldn't really find anything to argue with about that. He wasn't really comfortable with the idea of roaming around Hogwarts in his pyjamas and he'd probably be better off resting since the full moon was close.

"Okay," he said, pulling himself up onto the bed he was sitting on properly. "Um, could I have some parchment and a quill? So I can write to Sirius."

He grinned at the idea of going shopping with Sirius. It'd probably be a disaster but it'd be fun too. He'd have to make sure they went to get their books and supplies and uniforms first before going anywhere else.

"Um, breakfast? Please?" he said, looking hopeful and with any luck a bit like a puppy. His stomach growled its approval of the suggestion.

Ashley nodded, retrieving a few sheets of her stationery, a quill and ink. She set those on the table beside him.

"I will 'ave one of the elves bring you up something while I'm out," she promised. She, after all, had a lot of people to track down, and she'd have to check with Faustus on the status of the potion and to let him know there'd likely be two wolves on the grounds. And then she'd have to get in touch with Tristan, or have Filius do that so it was more ... official.

Then ... he'd be in the Ministry's hands.

Offering Remus a smile, she left him to get started on his letter while she got the balls rolling in the 'another's come back' process.
