RP: Safe Indoors
Characters: Landon, Tristan, open
Time/Date: 8ish, Saturday October 29
Location: Common-commons
Warnings/Rating: None?
Summary: Tris frets and Lan tries to balance him out
Status: Open, ongoing

Landon watched Tristan surreptitiously, though he reasoned Tris knew he was being watched. Neither of them had really been involved in the attack earlier. Tristan and Remus had been clear of the fray, and he and Rose had had the sense not to run toward it.

There'd been injuries, and Lan heard there'd been a death, but it was impossible to sort the rumors from the truth. He'd caught up with Jaime earlier, and she'd been helping out in the infirmary and had a better idea of what was really going on - but she still didn't know everything.

He'd gotten word from Rose that Lily had been caught in a bomb, but had been taken care of and was resting at home, so at least she was safe. He'd also heard that one of the Beauxbatons students had been torn up pretty bad and had been sent to St Mungo's, though he didn't have confirmation on that.

Shifting his weight, he sighed quietly before dropping his attention back to his book.

"Do you think it's really starting again?"

Tristan's voice surprised him a little, and Lan shook his head. "Another war, you mean? I don't ... I don't think anyone knows. No one can know, Tris." Landon lifted his shoulders slightly. "I think it's bad, and I think it's dangerous, but whether or not it's the start of an era of war ... I don't know."

Tristan nodded, gazing into the fire. Stories. That was all they had. Stories of what had happened, of what it was like. Tristan didn't want to live through it, but he knew he'd fight if it came to a war, and that terrified him.

Remus looked sober and almost scared when he walked into the common commons. He'd just been upstairs to check on James and Peter and Sirius and make sure they were okay. He'd been told that Lily had been hurt but that she'd made it to Severus' home so he was certain she was safe. He'd owl soon to make sure. Or use the journals maybe.

He walked over to where Lan and Tris were sitting and dropped down next to his boyfriend. He ran a hand down his face and stared into the fire.

"It was like this before," he said flatly. "Sort of. Voldemort never attacked Hogsmeade but there were people disappearing and dying. It's supposed to be over."

He'd heard that Greyback had been in the village and that scared him more than anything else. He knew who it was who'd bitten him. His dad had told him when he turned thirteen.

"Do you think it was him?" Tristan said as he shifted his light blue eyes to regard Remus, reaching out one hand to rub his boyfriend's thigh lightly. "I ... he hasn't been back that long, and if he's gotten everything organized already..."

"I'm sure it wasn't," Lan said. "For all the reasons you've given. It has to be someone outside." He nodded to Remus with a slight smile and a 'hey' of greeting.

Tristan rested his head on Remus' shoulder and sighed. "I ... it's really hard to even wrap my head around this," he admitted. "People don't get hurt. Our friends don't almost die because people are setting off bombs in a wizarding village. It's not ... a war. Is this how they start? Just ... someone attacks and that's it? No declaration of intentions or what they hope to accomplish, just ... here, have some bombs and some killing curses and maybe we'll fuck up your friends a little?"

Remus shook his head and agreed with Lan. "No, I don't think it was him. He hasn't been back long enough. I think it might have been his followers trying to impress him though."

He took Tris' hand in his and sighed. "It started quieter last time. I'm... I'm back from later than James and Sirius. They don't remember what I do but things started getting worse through our Sixth Year and there were attacks and disappearances during the summer. James had heard whispers about some secret group who was fighting where the Ministry couldn't." He chuckled softly. "The Order. I've looked it up. We were recruited pretty much right out of school. My guess is we made ourselves impossible to ignore."

Of course doing so had gotten James and Lily killed so maybe it hadn't been the smartest thing to do.

He sighed again. "I don't know about other wars but Voldemort never did that. He made statements from time to time but he never declared war formally. It's easier that way, don't you see? It makes it harder for the Ministry to fight back. It makes it easier for Voldemort's supporters to interfere and downplay things and ensure the Aurors and Hitwizards don't get the resources they need."

Landon glanced over to Tristan, vaguely worried he'd feel like they were ganging up on him, but... he seemed to be all right. "My grandfather mentioned ... that. The Order," Landon said. "He was around during war time, but wasn't ever in the Order." Though he strongly suspected his grandparents and Ace's parents had been involved in something like it. "He fought though. He ... lost his wife and his best mate in some battle or another near the end of it. I'm not sure ... the exact circumstances. It isn't his favorite thing to talk about."

"So do you think ... think it did impress him? Or will? That he's going to guess that he has ... I don't know. Willing followers out there? That it's going to make him bolder?" Not that he thought any of them would know for sure, and it wasn't as though Tom was about to start strutting around - because that would be stupid, and by all reports, Tom wasn't.

He laced his fingers with Remus', and offered the other wolf a little smile. "This whole thing ..." He shook his head before exhaling a heavy sigh. "I guess it had to happen sometime, right? Peace never lasts forever, and there's always someone wanting to prove they're bigger, better, stronger ..."

Remus shrugged. "From what I can tell a lot of people fought who weren't in the Order. We barely knew about it at the time I've returned from beyond what few rumours James heard but we'd talked about finding out more. It was Dumbledore's group though I doubt the Dumbledore who's here knows about it."

He was silent as he thought about Tris' question. It wasn't a comfortable one by any means. "Maybe. Though if it did, he's not going to show it. If anything, he'll probably openly condemn what happened. He's not stupid."

He shrugged and chewed on his bottom lip for a moment. "Voldemort followed Grindelwald. History repeats itself all the time. It was inevitable, especially if the wizarding world did it's best to forget and convince itself that Voldemort was the end of it. They set themselves up for the fall."

"That's so weird to think about. Knowing things about other people's lives. Things they might have wanted kept secret, and ..." He trailed off a little as he realized Remus fell into that category. He shrugged apologetically before continuing on.

"Us knowing about the Order. The outcomes of the war that's just starting when you're from. The second war that came up. Though all we know are stories." It really was one of the harder things to wrap his mind around. He did try to tread cautiously around people who might not want to be confronted with the reality of people knowing their secrets, which was easy for the most part at school.

"Typical behavior," Tris agreed. "Turning a blind eye to it all, pretending it can't happen again. Suppose we all fell victim to that, but ... at least some of us aren't going to do the same this time. The threat's real, and that should be obvious right now."

Should be. He knew there'd still be some who wanted to deny it. He hoped the Ministry was smart enough this time around not to fuck around and deny it until it was too late.
