RP: Desperate Uncertainty
Characters: Neville, Ari
Time/Date: Saturday evening, October 15 2023
Location: Her... room. *DECIDES ALL DECIDINGLY*
Warnings/Rating: PGish
Summary: Neville gets a letter he doesn't know what to do with
Status: Complete

He'd gotten the letter earlier that day. He'd been in the middle of pretending to write up his lesson plans for the week while actually daydreaming when the owl had slipped in being all official (and excited, if owls could be excited) and dropped a letter from the Ministry at his desk. He'd been startled, nearly falling out of his desk chair, and stared at the owl in bewilderment. The creature had just hooted, and waited expectantly for him to open it.

Which he had.

He wondered if the owl expected him to do something other than stare at the letter in absolute shock, and he was hoping not because he didn't really think he'd be able to do much else any time soon. He'd wondered when these dreams were going to start, or when old childhood dreams that he thought he'd left behind were going to resurface, and morph into something closer to his current reality.

The only thing missing from this dream was the fact that it was only Alice who had returned, not both of them. He thought though, that it was a nice touch that they'd thought to put her age down, knowing that he'd be able to do the backwards math and determine that it was before she'd been tortured into insanity, though he thought it would have been almost poetic to have his parents return from a time when they had already lost their mind. He could go through the nightmare all over again.

Dropping the letter onto his desk, he thanked the owl wordlessly, belatedly thinking to offer it a treat. He knew from the way the bird snapped the snack out of his hand that this was not the reaction it was hoping for - likely, it knew the contents of the letter, and expected him to rejoice. Could owls live vicariously through their recipients? Either way, he supposed the owl hadn't expected him to realize that he'd clearly just fallen asleep at his desk. Or something.

Though as the afternoon wore on, and he managed to get his lesson plan worked out for the next two weeks - unprecedented, since he didn't usually have that kind of focus - and he still failed to wake up, he realized that he'd have to do something to snap out of this dream. Maybe deal with the unresolved feelings he clearly had. So he picked up the letter and slipped out of his room.

The hallways were uncharacteristically quiet for afternoon, which made him suspect that it was evening or night now, but he couldn't bring himself to care, or stop on his track to Ariana's room, though he did hesitate briefly when he reached the door, knocking... quieter than he might have otherwise, in case it was really late and she'd fallen asleep.

Because... what if this wasn't a dream?

Aware he likely looked a mess from fitful not!crying, he leaned against the side of the wall and stared at the letter without reading it, hoping that Ari would be awake and able to talk him through this bout of unexpected childhood angst.

She held his hand back, squeezing gently. She smiled as he went through his thank-yous, shaking her head slightly. He didn't need to thank her, and she wondered if he'd ever come to realize that.

"If I hadn't been here, you would've done the smart thing and gone to the infirmary to interrupt Ashley and Ben. They're having entirely too much sex. It's just not healthy." She offered him a little smile before squeezing his hand again. Sure, it was probably too early for inappropriate sex jokes about their colleagues, but that was what she fell back on in situations.

"It'll be fine," she assured him gently as she stroked his hair and leaned in to press her lips softly to his. "Go on. It's real, Neville. She's here, and you'll see her when you're ready, and it'll be fine."

He half chuckled, vaguely amused at the thought of going to the infirmary and disturbing Ashley and Ben. He didn't think he would have 'done the smart thing'. He likely would have stood in the hallway outside her room for a bit before finally going back to his and lay back on his bed, staring at the ceiling. He would have been completely zonked at work the next day, and he wasn't certain that he wasn't going to do that anyway, but... well. Maybe this way he could get some sleep. He'd see, anyway.

He kissed her back, shifting a bit so that he was facing her better, a hand sliding up her arm to settle on her shoulder. He was going to head out in a minute, try and send an owl, but this was nice right now. This wasn't a cause for panic. And that, in itself, was something.

Ari smiled as she dropped a hand to squeeze his thigh gently when he shifted to face her. "It'll be all right," she promised him again. "And I'm always here if you need me. Even if it's ridiculously late at night, all right?"

Leaning in, she pressed her lips softly to his once more. "You should ... get some rest or find an owl or ... however you want to handle this," she encouraged him gently. "It really will be fine, love. She'll love you, and be proud of you. What mother wouldn't?"

Not really willing to pull away from her, he accepted that he probably should. This... wasn't really the right night to be getting into anything. Not when he was out of sorts emotionally anyway. He should leave before he did something stupid, which he was often likely to do.

"All right," he said to her words, offering her a slight smile, and wondering if she would come to regret that the next time that he had a crisis. But... she didn't seem to think so, and he couldn't express how comforting that was. How useful to his sanity it was to know that.

"I'll... yeah," he said finally, trying to hide the blush and the smile at the idea that his mother would be proud of him. It had been a while, really, since he'd bothered to think about whether or not he would have made them proud if they'd been coherent enough to... know who he was. The idea that she thought his mother would be proud... made him smile. "I'll... head back, try to deal with this like an adult," he said with a wry grin. "Thanks for... being here, again. I..." but he'd said that already. He didn't need to repeat himself for the 20th time that evening. So instead he just squeezed her shoulder gently before starting to pull himself up to his feet, preparing to leave.

Ari remained silent, a light smile on her lips as he stammered his way through this. She could only begin to imagine what it was like, what a shock it must be. But there were others in his situation ... people who had parents younger than some of their children, like Harry. She trusted that he could go to them as well, if she proved to be inadequate in her ability to relate to his situation.

She nodded to his thanks and rose as he did. She knew he could find the door, but she had no problem walking him out and stealing a last goodnight kiss before sending him on his way.

She wondered if he would owl his mum tonight, or if he'd wait for morning, but either way, she hoped he did do something soon.
