RP: Catching Up
Characters: Tory, Lestranges
Time/Date: late night, April September 21
Location: Lestrange Hall
Warnings/Rating: TBD - PG13 for violence and language, likely
Summary: Tory goes to catch up with old friends. Maybe. Or he'll be killed.
Status: Limited, ongoing

It had taken him significant time to get his ducks in order.

It being so many years in the future, with the Dark Lord dead, he didn't know where he stood with any of his old "friends" and he didn't know who to owl. He didn't know what the situations were like, if he still had access to his vault (unlikely) or what to do or where to go. He'd eventually ended up robbing the odd wizard here or there, both in wizarding and muggle London, thankful at least for the small grace of still having his wand - the Daily Prophet being quick to inform him that some of the wizards didn't have them upon their return.

He didn't notice a page on his own return, which he found useful, but he knew that with his jumping from place to place he'd likely missed a paper or two. The fact that he hadn't given January a name was likely to his benefit - there were not many wizards who could match "Tory" to the names of given Death Eaters.

But even with all of that going for him, he still knew that he could not live like this forever, running around, scared of his own shadow, so he decided to take a chance. He'd heard that Bellatrix Lestrange had returned, and... well, frankly, when he didn't hear of her capture or in the next coming weeks, he assumed that Lestrange Hall may be a safe place to go. It was likely being watched, but once upon a time he'd been keyed into the wards and perhaps that stood even in death.

Or... perhaps he'd set off one of Roddy's booby traps and die horribly. Again. Well, worse things had happened, and he was tired of living like a rat.

So, he apparated onto the Lestrange's front porch (if he could - or as close as he could manage and walked if he couldn't), braced himself, and knocked on their front door, hoping that 'old friends' was enough of a convincer for them to take in strays.

Bored didn't even begin to describe Bellatrix. There was boredom, and then there was mind-numbing extremes of boredom. She'd heard about Voldemort's fall, and about the revelation he'd been a half-blood, and she'd spent nearly a full week in a complete sulk about that. The man she'd loved, that she'd devoted her life to, had been a filthy half-blood.

It was disgusting, all of it. The fact that he'd been taken down by another halfblood had a certain irony to it though. Part of her still wanted to take revenge on the Potter family for that ... she hadn't managed to kill the daughter after all. Not that she'd known it at the time, but she liked to think it was a little bit of justice just there.

Strolling about the house, doing her best to avoid Beckett, Bellatrix cocked her head as she felt the wards ripple and heard a knock. If the wards hadn't thrown the person back, it must be someone familiar enough with the house they could feel welcome.

Very, very curious - and hopeful that this meant a respite, however brief, from her boredom, Bellatrix opened the door.

Dark eyes swept over the man standing there, and it took her a moment to recognize him. Glancing past him, she looked to ensure there were no Aurors - not that they could even get close enough - she stepped back and gestured him in. "Didn't hear anything about your return," she said by way of greeting.

It was entirely on the top of his tongue, and almost not bitten back, to smirk and say, "some of us know how to keep out of the papers" but he knew that insulting the lady of the manner was perhaps not the best start when one was looking for charity, so he said instead, "Got off lucky - returned in an empty corridor. Not as... ah. Grand of an entrance, but I managed to slip through without really offering a name."

He glanced around as he entered, raising a brow. "Place hasn't changed much in 20 years," he observed. "Hard to believe it's really been that long, and the Ministry isn't playing some sort if grand joke on the lot of us."

Oh, he knew it wasn't a joke. He was just being facetious. "Speaking of, you must be going mad stuck in here," he said as though the thought was just occurring to him, and honestly, he couldn't decide if he was saying it to try and be sympathetic, or if he was just being an ass.

Bellatrix snorted at his little quip. Her hand dropped toward her wand, but she refrained from actually pulling it. "Rodolphus is busy, if you came to see him," she said. For a moment, she thought about pawning him off on Beckett - she'd likely be thrilled to see another Death Eater residing in the house - but thought better of it.

For now.

"Hardly a joke," she muttered as she studied him. She was trying to decide if he actually looked younger, or if she was imagining it. She hadn't paid much attention to anyone other than her Lord during the last few months, so it could be that she was remembering wrong.

"Do you recall the war? The battle at Hogwarts?"

He shrugged his shoulders easily, relieved more than anything that he hadn't had to engage in any sort of wand fight yet. He knew he didn't have the greatest of attitudes, and he wasn't used to having to beg for scraps. But then, he wasn't exactly used to dying either. But he really wasn't sure if he'd come to see Rodolphus, or if he'd come to see Bellatrix. Roddy, as far as he knew, had lived out his life without his wife, and had not returned - unless he'd been sly about it. Bella was more likely to answer his questions.

Though really, they were both insane, and the more he thought about it, the more he wondered what, exactly, he thought he was doing here.

"Hardly a joke," he agreed before he nodded his head. "I remember the war. Died somewhere in one of the upper halls, likely in the heat of it. Before you kicked it, since I don't remember that. How'd that go, by the way? Potter-brat axe you too?"

He assumed that was what had happened to Voldemort. He honestly couldn't be bothered to do any further research on the subject. They'd lost the war - that was obvious - and he didn't need to really know anything further than that. He'd be interested if it was told to him, but not enough to look it up himself.

Bella's lip curled in a grimace of distaste at the mention of Potter. Or the battle. Or the reminder of what Voldemort, her Dark Lord, had been. All of it was a dirty smear on the mirror of her life, and she had no desire to see any of it in her mind, to relive any of it.

She tipped her chin up, but she knew she'd be caught in a lie if she tried to make her death sound less humiliating than it had been. "Molly Weasley," she spat. "When I went after one of her brood. Harry Potter," she sneered. "Defeated our Dark Lord."

Despite the knowledge of Voldemort's blood status, she still thought revenge was needed. Potter had children, had a wife. Potter himself could be a target if they played all of their cards right. It wasn't for her to decide though. No, no. They were laying low, ridiculous as that was.

She just wanted to kill things, be they kittens or Muggles.

He didn't really like her expression, and though he was good about keeping it off of his face, he couldn't help but be a bit eager to hear the reason for it, so long as it didn't mean bad news for him. He didn't think it did, but you could never be too sure with the Lestranges.

Though... even he wasn't expected the response she gave him.

"Molly... Weasley," he stared, and he did his very best not to laugh. "That's... shocking. Didn't know... Weasleys had that kind of talent. Suppose it's a mother bear instinct? She's certainly large enough. If she charged, maybe she built up her power by rubbing her feet against the ground, some kind of static thing." He smirked, before immediately wiping the smirk off his face. It wasn't funny. He couldn't find it funny. His life might be at risk.

"I assumed as much," he said, his own upper lip curling slightly. "About the Potter brat. The prophecy seems to have predicted as much. Shame how in the end he was so weak, and fell so easily. Guess he wasn't the man we thought he was." He was unaware how true that statement was.

"It was a lucky shot," Bellatrix snapped peevishly. Honestly, if she hadn't been distracted by the two brats she'd been fighting with, it never would have happened. "Everyone's got to get lucky once in a while," she continued arrogantly, dark eyes sparking and daring him to continue down the path the smirk indicated he might be looking along.

Her eyes narrowed a little as Tory lit on - deliberately or otherwise - the very thing she was unwilling to fess up to so easily. But he'd hear, sooner or later.

"He wasn't," she said quietly, her voice a dead calm. "He was a half-blood. His father. Was a Muggle." She spat the last word as if it was dirty - but then, it really was, to her. "All those years, and no one asked. No one looked to his heritage." No one, herself included, but it was still vile, disgusting. That they'd served a half-blood. That she'd all but worshiped one.

"No matter," she said as she shook her hair back. "He's gone, and we're not. Not anymore," she amended, a sly grin stealing across her lips.

"Of course," he said, nodding his head once. He was able to keep a straight face so long as he kept reminding himself it was a matter of life and death. "I'm truly just surprised that there was enough magic in her to take out a witch of your caliber." And that was an honest statement. She'd find no hint of mockery in his tone for that one. He truly was surprised to hear the Weasley woman had it in her.

Of course, her revelation that the Dark Lord had been of Muggle descent thrust all other thoughts violently out of his mind.

"He was a what?" he snarled out. "A muggleborn?" well that left a bad taste in his mouth. "That does not feel like a 'no matter' issue to me, Bellatrix. That fells like an issue that does matter. No wonder he was so easily defeated. All talk, that's what it was."

Bellatrix shrugged. "It doesn't matter now. I'm here, and she's old." Granted, she wanted to get to Molly before old age did. If not Molly herself, her children, her grandchildren. It was part of why she wanted to get her hands on Potter's brats; that would get all of them in one fell swoop. Torture, then death.

Maybe. If she was feeling generous. She might just keep them alive as playthings to dangle over the Potter-Weasley clan's head.

Drawn from her thoughts at Mulciber's snarl, she nodded tightly. "Well, he's gone now, too. There'll be another. Someone pureblood. Someone who won't fall to a child so easily." Perhaps no one she'd feel the same about, but that didn't matter, either. It was just embarrassing how devoted she'd been to ... to that.

At least she hadn't been the only one fooled by him. They'd all been taken in by it.

With a jerk of her chin, she gestured toward the sitting room. They could at least sit and have tea while they talked about everything. While she got Mulciber caught up, and perhaps Rodolphus would find the time to join them.

He was still furious, and it was made doubly difficult by the fact that she seemed so at ease with the whole thing - she'd clearly had more time than he had to come to terms with it. Or something. Bellatrix was the person he thought would have taken this news the hardest. There was no way she wasn't still smarting over this, even if she was playing cool right now.

He nodded, though he was exhaling audibly through his nose in his attempt to control his temper, at her statements that it didn't matter, and forced himself to think rationally about this. Someone else would rise up? He found that unlikely. They'd had 20 years, what was going to make them decide to rise up now? If he'd had any inclination to be that kind of leader he'd have done it long ago, but he was content with being a highly favoured follower and didn't want to give up those perks.

Following her into the sitting room did nothing to quell his fury. Someone needed to pay for this atrocity. "Potter," he said quietly once they were settled, channeling his anger into a focal point. "He'll pay for this... this humiliation. I am not certain how, but there must be a way to make him suffer for the damage he's caused."

"He will," Bella agreed as she snapped her fingers to summon one of the house elves. "Tea," she said simply as she lowered herself elegantly into a chair. "As much as humanly possible, and then a little bit more for good measure. Him, the daughter of the bitch who killed me, their children. Their parents."

Bella smiled coldly. "No one will be untouched by the time we're through," she agreed. Dark eyes did shift toward Rodolphus' study, but ... it wasn't as though he could physically stop her. Not if she wanted this.

"Have you run into anyone else since you've come back?" The tone was casual, almost conversation, but she was curious. It was a sad, sad day when Avery was more connected than the rest of them.

"We'll burn the school to the ground," he said, both in agreement to her statement and to himself. In his mind, there wasn't a child at the school who wouldn't deserve what was coming to them. Very few of the upper level Death Eaters who'd been worth taking note of that had conceived. At least, not that he noticed while he was alive. They could all burn, as far as he was concerned.

At her question, he hesitated, though he tried to make it more casual than that, it was likely apparent. Knowing that, he opted to come clean. Mostly. "Can't say that I've really bothered," he said with a shrug. "Out of those who are still alive I have no idea as to their allegiances, and most of those who've returned are too young - at least that I've seen. I knew it was a risk coming here, but frankly... I felt like I was running low on options." He shrugged again. "Have to start rebuilding somewhere. Figured you and Rodolphus would be the only ones worth trusting in this brave new world."

And Roddy probably had a few more connections than he'd be able to manage on his own. Between the two of them, he figured he could be pointed in the right direction, if not given a place to stay.

It would be nice to watch it burn, but they'd need a bigger army than they had just then. Amassing one would take years, and someone would have to play leader. She nodded her agreement, and moved on; if she thought on it too much, she'd get pissed off all over again.

"Avery's still around. According to him, Macnair's returned. Avery has some contacts," she said, sneering a little. Not as many or as well connected ones as Rodolphus had, but still. "Fenrir came back, but I haven't seen him yet. He's likely palling around with the local wolf pack," she continued as if she knew things. Avery had told her some things; at least there was that.

She smirked slightly. "You've definitely got that. The Malfoys have gone neutral." Which was a bit of a shame. She'd thought it was simply a front at first, but Narcissa had been quite firm on the matter. Bella didn't think her sister would lie to her, but she didn't know what had changed in the quarter century since the war.

"Contacts relevant to someone's interest? That's stunning. Has it taken him all these years to manage that?" he smirked slightly, though he nodded his head, absorbing the information. He rolled his eyes when she mentioned the Malfoys had become neutral, brushing it off as something that he'd expected - Lucius had never had much of a backbone, and it had likely been under Narcissa's guidance that they'd declared their neutrality in the new world. Likely, she would not do anything to jeopardize that decision unless something radical occurred.

"How many of them do you suppose there are?" he mused thoughtfully, rolling his wand around in his fingers. "The neutral individuals, lying in wait for someone to rise up in challenge? It isn't as though we didn't have overwhelming support before. It can't have simply been because of the Dark Lord's... charisma. Surely the things that we stood for haven't died in the last 30 years, even if we have."

Ideas were flowing around in his head. Nothing concrete, not at the moment, but fury was still boiling in his blood and he was tired of sitting around doing nothing and hoping for something to happen. He had a second chance at life for a reason - maybe it was time to step up and take charge. Or at least start something for someone else to take charge of.

"I think if someone stepped forward, there'd be a fair few crawling out of the woodwork, if only to avoid repercussions." They'd all see the levels of destruction the Death Eaters had been capable of. They knew things about each other. The ones that were still alive would come together if someone strong enough called them.

Someone who wasn't going to repeat the mistakes of the past. Someone who was actually a pureblood. Bellatrix would make very, very sure of this before she blindly devoted herself. Rather like a dog who'd been kicked while she was down, she was wary.

"But no ... if we had a proper leader, we might be able to win this time. In the meantime ... we can still act out." A sly smile crept across her lips at that. "I've been itching to get out and shed Muggle blood. This sitting at home ..." Bellatrix shook her head. It was going to drive her more insane than she already was.

He wasn't a leader. He knew that. He knew that he wasn't the person who should step up and lead any kind of fight. He wasn't the second coming - he hadn't been the first coming, what made him think that he'd be the second? - but he just thought that... if he could get something started... maybe someone else would step up who would prove to be a leader they could all get behind. Someone who was just waiting for an opportunity.

He had to get these thoughts of out his head before he did something stupid with them.

"I wouldn't mind getting in on that, if you'd entertain company," he said with a smirk. He'd been itching to spill some blood himself. "Though is it safe for you to leave in the current state of things?"

Bella laughed, the sound a little shrill, sharp, sudden in the otherwise quiet room. It was a fortunate thing the house elf was accustomed to her outbursts, or else the tea might have been spilled instead of set carefully on the table.

"Safe?" Her brows arched. "Hardly. But if we wait for it to be safe, we'll be trapped in here forever."

Not that she knew it, but her thoughts were running alongside his. If they could get someone with a brain, with connections, with charisma to run the show ... they could do it so much better this time around.

She, at least, had learned from her mistakes.

Preparing a cup of tea for herself, she gestured for Mulciber to do the same.

His lip curled upwards in a smirk. "You have a point," he said, reaching over to help himself to tea after she offered. He wasn't normally a big tea drinker, but he knew his social graces and that refusing hospitality was more insulting than 'suffering' through a cup or two, so he sipped at the edge of his drink. He vaguely wished for something stronger, but he wasn't going to complain - or ask for it, frankly.

"Senseless, pointless, just plain fun killing or were you thinking you wanted to make some sort of statement?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "A sort of 'beware world - Bellatrix Lestrange is back with a vengeance'. 'Cause there are possibly ways to have an element of safety to it if you're just out for some fun."

They could kill and maim on the night of a full, for example. More than likely, the wolves would be blamed.

"Is there a difference?" she inquired, brows arching. Oh, she knew there was. Fun killing, it didn't matter who saw the bodies. Making a statement, however, required planning to ensure the proper eyes were the first on the scene.

"Either. Both. Suppose the first one until we decide what sort of statements we want to make." Ah yes. We, we, we. Mulciber was here. He was talking familiar talk. Bellatrix counted him among a 'we', and Rodolphus, if he didn't like it, would simply have to deal with it.

She stirred some honey into her tea, gazing thoughtfully (if a bit blankly) off to one corner while her mind twisted and whirled. "Muggles first," she said. "Whether it's for fun or a statement. Muggles first, until we figure everything out."

"Not an important one," he said with a smirk and a shrug of his shoulders. He found with each passing moment, a weight was easing further off his shoulders. This was going better than he'd hoped it would. He wasn't dead yet, and he might even get a few good kills out of it. He was relieved that it hadn't been a completely foolish and suicidal call to show up unexpectedly at the Lestrange's door.

"Can you leave here without assistance, or will the Ministarial Morons be all over you like a bad rash the moment you try?" he wondered how much of their distance from the manner was Roddy's work, and how much of it was based on fear. Because if the majority of it was Rodolphus... Bellatrix could come and go as she pleased with no problem.

If it wasn't... things would probably be a bit more tricky.

"I can. Rodolphus simply doesn't think it is wise. I imagine wounding the Potter child with my emergence back into this world wasn't exactly the best way to lay low." But in complete fairness to her, she'd been dueling with Molly after the elder Weasley had chased away the three little bints she'd been dueling with prior.

She'd been in the heat of battle. She'd seen red hair. It had been a natural reaction, at least to her.

"They'll be looking for me, certainly, but they wouldn't notice me leaving. They don't even know where I am." She smirked at that before gesturing with her free hand. "This is all in the name of Rodolphus' ... pet." She couldn't really think of another, more charitable word for Beckett. "So technically, there are no ties to either of us. Didn't stop them from sniffing around, but ... they've got nothing to go on."

"Shame you only wounded her," he remarked. "Though I can understand it wasn't as though you were given much control. The sudden lack of... battle... was disorienting at best. It's impressive that you managed to escape at all.

"Rodolphus'... pet?" he raised a brow. He suspected Bellatrix didn't mean an animal, though he was curious as to what sort of 'pets' would be allowed to be kept after the mistress of the house had returned. He wondered if Bellatrix would elaborate or ignore him entirely.

He was intrigued by the idea that Bellatrix could remain in her own house with only suspicions that she was there from the Ministry, and really did want to hear how that had been managed, but he wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't elaborated on.

She waved a dismissive hand. "Some witch he picked up along the way to pose as a front so he could hide and act like he wasn't hiding." Bellatrix snorted at that thought.

She understood the logic of that particular situation; she simply didn't like the idea of her husband being driven to ground. "Natasha Beckett. I can't imagine the name means anything to you. She's not that old." Which simply meant the girl hadn't been on their radar - and perhaps not even born yet - at a time Tory would recall.

Sipping at her tea, she drifted her eyes back to him. "Not even badly," she said as she slipped back to the prior topic. "She was out for a couple of days before they managed to unwind whatever I'd done to her. Disappointing."

The name didn't mean anything to him, so he simply nodded, his face displaying no recognition. It was interesting to him, though, that Rodolphus had taken that path. He wondered for how long the man had been 'in hiding' - this entire time? He was likely as batty as Bella by now - and what issues had driven him to employ such drastic measures, though he supposed those were questions for Rodolphus himself, whenever the other man got around to showing himself.

"And she's still here, even with your return?" he said, sipping at his tea for something to do with his hands. "Should we be checking the food for poison?" He couldn't imagine that Beckett had been entirely pleased to see Bellatrix return. He was assuming that Beckett had likely entertained ideas about taking over the manner as Rodolphus' mistress - assuming she hadn't already done so - and Bella's return would have just complicated things.

He rolled his eyes slightly when Bella mentioned the girl's quick recovery. "Well, at least you managed something on the way out. Gave Potter a good scare so that he knows what's in store."

Bellatrix smirked, and shook her head. "It isn't like that. She's not his lover or anything as cliche as that. She happens to be a great fan of mine," the witch continued, the smirk never leaving her lips. She had entertained thoughts of her own along that vein, but ... well, it wasn't like that.

Beckett was simply the public liaison for Rodolphus. Doing what he couldn't.

Shrugging her shoulders, Bellatrix leaned back slightly in her seat. "He knows," she agreed softly. "I imagine the first chance he gets, he's going to want to kill me." She smiled coldly at that. "Let him try."
