There were flickers of memory. Her brothers, and Gellert. They'd been arguing, loudly. She'd had her dolls, had been playing quietly alone upstairs while they talked ... but then there'd been yelling. Loud words, angry words.

So she'd gone to see, and when she saw wands out and spells flying, she hadn't thought, she'd simply done. She wanted to protect her brothers, to protect Abe. She recalled, very vaguely ... someone calling her name, calling out a no, but then everything had been black and dark.

It was black and dark again, but warmer, quieter. Ari fumbled and pushed aside coats before she found a door. Opening it slowly, curiously, she stepped out of the closet. Closet. They'd never had a closet here. Not here. But the house was different. It wasn't her house, somehow. Somehow ... everyone was gone, and she was in a house that wasn't her own. How did that happen?

"Abe?" she called quietly, listening to her own voice echo back at her. "Albus?" she tried softly as she eased slowly further away from the closet. She wouldn't call out for Gellert. Even if he were here, she didn't want to see him.

"Abe?" she tried again at the base of the stairs. "Abe please, I'm scared," she called again, her fingers lacing in front of her, pressing into her belly as she peered up the dark stairwell. What was she meant to do? She didn't know where she was nor how she'd gotten here. She didn't know if she should stay, or try to find her brothers. They had to be around here somewhere, didn't they?

Cautiously, she climbed the stairs and eased into the empty house. It was furnished, it looked lived in, but it was empty. And it still wasn't her house. There were walls where there hadn't been walls before. The colors were all wrong, and she didn't recognize a lot of the devices that were staggered about the house. Keeping her hands to herself, Ari wound her way to the front door.

Here she hesitated. She'd only ever gone outside at night, and she could see the sun shining through the window. Would her brothers be upset with her if she went out? But they weren't here right now, and this wasn't her house, so wouldn't they be more cross if she was in a neighbor's house?

Opening the door slowly, blinking her big blue eyes at the sun spilling down toward her, she let herself out slowly. "Albus?" she called out. "Abe?" She lifted her voice and called their names again as she looked around.

Smoothing her hands over the heavy velvet skirt of her dress, Ariana began to move slowly away from the house. She was seeking her own home, calling out her brothers' names as she moved around the town. It all looked different though, and as she grew more and more frightened, she could feel her magic swirling and rising inside of her. She hoped she could hold it in check, but she had never been very confident in her abilities when it came to her rogue magic.

Albus had been out buying a few groceries. He had some pocket money from the part-time job he'd worked earlier in the summer and he didn't see the point of making his parents buy his favorite food when he had the means to buy things himself.

He was working toward the idea of being more responsible. Some of the family had to do that. They were up to quote with the clowns. A few stick-in-the-muds were needed to even things out, he thought.

As he walked, Al chewed absently on one of the carrots he bought and surveyed the neighborhood. It was sort of nice how quiet out it was today. Peaceful, even.

Al paused halfway down the street when a faint sound reached his ear. He slowed his pace to a stop when he realized it was his name. Had he accidentally ignored someone?

"Yes?" Al looked around, confused for a moment until he spotted the girl. She didn't look familiar, but she did look lost.

Thinking that maybe his parents has sent her his way for some reason, Al waved before moving toward her. "Sorry," he continued. "I didn't hear you calling before. Were you looking for me?"

Ari shifted uneasily. The clothes were all wrong. Everything was all wrong, and she felt a tremor whisper through her. She clutched her hands more tightly together before she shook her head.

Clenching her jaw and swallowing hard, she shook her head again. "I'm looking for my brothers. Albus and Aberforth."

Dark blue eyes shifted back and forth over his attire, his bag of groceries, the rest of the neighborhood. She didn't want to admit that she wasn't home anymore. The entire place was both familiar and not. It was the same on a fundamental level, but changed. So very changed. "I ... I think I'm lost," she whispered.

Albus almost back-pedaled -- he had serious issues with girls crying. It just set wrong with him and made him all sorts of uncomfortable. He never knew what to do. Hugs? You were supposed to give those, right? He wasn't so great at hugging people.

...he would just hope she didn't cry.

"Hey, don't worry." Al put on his best reassuring face and held out his hand. "I can help you find your way back. D'you know what street you live on? Is it near here? Or what town?"

"I came out of that house, there," she said as she turned to point toward it. "My brothers and Mr Gellert were fighting, and then when I blinked again, I was in a closet we never had. It's where our house is supposed to be, but it isn't our house any more. It had someone else's things in it."

She didn't know how that - how any of this - was possible. "My name is Ariana. Ariana Dumbledore. My big brother is Albus and my other big brother is Aberforth, and they weren't there."

Albus Dumbledore?

Even if he were a dunce, Al would recognize that name. When you were named after a famous wizard, you tried to have at least a little bit of knowledge about the baggage that might go with it.

This little girl was much too young to be the little sister of Dumbledore, though. If she had been confuddled, it was going to be beyond Al's experience to help set her right.

"Why... why don't you come with me to my house? Is that okay? I think my dad knows your brother... if he's home, he could probably help us get you where you need to be, okay?"

Ugh. He sounded sketchy even to himself.

Ari regarded him skeptically. In this neighborhood where everything was so very wrong, how could this man's father know her brothers?

Maybe if his father was a professor or something, he might know them from school. Still, she was crazy, not stupid - she knew she didn't have a lot of options. Her house wasn't her house. Her brothers and Gellert were gone.

She had no place to go, and what was she meant to do? The man before her seemed nice enough ...

Hesitantly, Ari nodded. "All right," she consented quietly.

"Right."

Al shifted his groceries slightly to point up the road toward the Potter household.

"It's just up there," he assured, scrounging in the bag for something edible. Finding what he was looking for, he offered it to the girl -- Ari. "Hungry?"

Juggling the bag again so that he could open the door when they got to it, Albus looked down toward Ari again. "Erm. So how old are you, anyway? D'you go to school...? I go to the same school your brother went to."

He was fishing, yes. He didn't recognize the girl at all, but she had to know about magic and Hogwarts.

While she might have been hungry, she was too tense to eat. So instead, she shook her head to politely decline the offer.

"Fourteen," she answered softly. "I don't go to school," she added. She wasn't in a rush to elaborate on the why, however, so she kept that to herself.

She followed along after him, regarding all the houses curiously. "What month is it?" It felt too hot to be June, though she supposed she couldn't know for certain. She only ever went out at night, and only to the backyard.

Al tilted his head to one side, wondering for a moment why she wouldn't go to school at all. He couldn't help but wish he knew more about Dumbledore to have a better idea of who he was dealing with.

He still wasn't convinced this was actually the younger sister of Albus Dumbledore.

"It's August," he replied. "Getting towards the end of the month."

Add another odd thing about her if she didn't know what the date was.

"My sister is just a little older than you," Al shared. "She's a chatterbox, though. I'll try to keep her from accosting you too much while we look for my dad."

Al paused as he turned to lead them up the path to the door. "Did you run into anyone else today? No one... erm.. befuddled you in any way, did they?" Colouring, he hurried on. "You just seem really confused?"

Ariana shook her head. "There was no one else. Just a house that wasn't mine, and my brothers gone missing."

August. August was later in the year than June ... But what could have happened to make her miss two months, and changed the world so drastically in the meantime?

She listened as Al chattered on, though she hesitated before actually following him into the house. She felt herself tensing sllightly and she tried to relax, to focus on breathing so she wouldn't accidentally hurt someone, or break something.

She kept her fists pressed into her belly so she wouldn't disrupt something by accident. Wide blue eyes swept over the interior of the house, but like the others, this was full of a lot if things she was utterly unfamiliar with.

"We'll try to get everything sorted... just let me set this down." Al gave her a reassuring smile before moving into the kitchen to slide his sack of groceries onto the counter. He'd have to put it all away later, but now really wasn't the time.

"Someone should be about. You can sit just in there while I look, okay?" Al gestured vaguely toward the nearest chair before bounding over to the stairs to peer up.

"'ullo! Mum? Dad? Could I get one of you out here for a moment?"

Lily stuck her head out of the kitchen. "Dad's busy," she said to Al, a grin on her lips. "He's upstairs with his mum," she added. She didn't expect him to believe it, not for a moment, but it was the truth.

She caught sight of the young girl with Al, and her brow furrowed slightly. "Who's that?" she inquired as she closed up her journal. "Come help me make tea," she added. "Dad'll probably be down pretty soon."

Ariana jumped slightly in surprise when someone started chattering, and she guessed that was the sister. She tightened her fingers and tried not to think about the wild magic running around inside of her head.

"With his mum?" Al repeated dumbly. That couldn't be right. If LilyLu hadn't grinned like that, Albus would have thought he'd misunderstood. As it was, he settled with being patiently flummoxed until the situation made everything clear.

"This is Ariana Dumbledore. She's gotten lost," Albus introduced, gesturing to the girl. "Ariana? This is the sister I was telling you about -- LilyLu."

Hesitating for a moment, Al motioned to Ari again. "D'you want to help with the tea, too? Or would you rather sit?"

Poor kid. He couldn't help but feel bad for her.

"Dumbledore?" she echoed. She very nearly called up to her father, but she supposed she'd scared him enough today and she supposed he really only needed one surprise at a time. "Like, great wizard you were named after Dumbledore?"

Lily glanced to the girl, to her old-fashioned dress, and she shook her head. "It's like a pandemic of ..." she hesitated. Maybe Ariana didn't realize she'd died? "Of people like Dad's mum." She bounced a little on the balls of her feet, a grin on her lips.

Ari shook her head slightly. She'd never made tea before, and would probably be more of a hazard than a help.

"So anyway," Lily plunged on. "I went up to my room, and she was in there. Dad's mum. If you can even believe that. He sent me down to make tea, but I had to tell everyone first."

Albus silently sighed in relief. He didn't want to scare the poor kid anymore by saying she was dead... or... returned dead. Sort of like the muggle zombies. He was glad Lily was being discreet with that bit of info.

Tell everyone, though? Al regarded Lily critically down his nose. "Who's 'everyone', Lil? Just Mum or James, I hope? Possibly not even James. I dunno how quiet he can keep til Dad gets things sorted."

He was a bit of a chatterer when he was nervous, but Al prided himself on screening what he said.

"Oh no. Family. Cousins and siblings. You are not properly surprised by the fact that dad's mum is in my room." Lily was kind of appalled by the lack of reaction, honestly. But he'd never been as reaction-ful as Jamie had been. "I'm not joking, you know." She pouted a little before she made an effort to get the tea things together.

She really did intend to make tea, now that she'd informed the family of the return of one of their relatives. One of her relatives, anyway.

Shrugging, she climbed onto the counter. "I dunno if Jamie saw it yet. Dunno if he'd even got a journal on him, wherever he is. We'll have to send him an owl, see if he'll come home for this."

"You're going to fall and break your neck," Al remarked absently, bemused expression in place.

True, he'd never been much one for reacting. He liked to be the calm one. Al had worked very hard to keep his cool no matter what crazy antics were inflicted on him. Granted, this was one of the crazier things he'd had to deal with, but he was going try his best to keep a level head nonetheless.

"No, I believe you," Al continued, moving to help Lily with the tea stuff. "Weird stuff is happening by the bucketload in the time it took to get groceries. Is... erm... Dad alright?"

He remembered that the death of his grandparents on his dad's side had been rather traumatic.

"Dunno," she admitted. "Likely will be all right, 'til he gets to work and has to deal with the paperwork side of this."

After getting down the tea, she hopped off the counter. "Aren't you excited to meet her? I guess she came from just ..." she flicked her eyes toward Ari, who was lingering in the archway to the kitchen, watching them.

"From that night," Lily said, deciding Al would know.

Filling up the kettle, she hauled it over to the stove to start heating before she frowned. "You've got magic, yeah? Why don't you do this part?" She scoffed. Using the slow way when her brother was right there.

"Yeah," Al confirmed with a grin. "But just because I have it doesn't mean I'm going to use it. It takes almost as much time to just make the tea."

Which probably wasn't what Lily wanted to hear, so Albus decided to make himself helpful by getting the tea cups set up in a row. He pointed to a cup and gave Ari a questioning look, curious if she'd like some tea before continuing with the conversation.

"And of course I'm excited to meet her. I guess? It seems... weird. And not like a happy reunion or anything..."

What was it like to go from dying protecting your baby to finding out he's an adult and his oldest kid is around your age almost?

"There's a reason Jamie's my favorite brother," Lily muttered as she sighed and turned on the burner. Settling the kettle onto it, she peered curiously toward the stairs.

Well, no sense in going up there 'til the tea was done, right?

Attention turned to the younger witch, and Lily studied her curiously. This had to be those most interesting thimg that had ever happened here.

Ari shook her head slightly to the offer of tea. Instead, she retreated to one of the couches, hands clasped in her lap as she tried to stay calm and not panic, because panicking would make the magic surge out ... and that was always unpredictable.

"Is there something we should do for her?" Albus wondered quietly, choosing to ignore the favorite brother shot. He was sort of accustomed by now to being the least fun out of the entire brood of siblings and cousins. It didn't ruffle any of his feathers.

Retrieving some honey, Al regarded it curiously for a moment before shrugging.

"I have no idea how Gramma Potter takes her tea... Do you?"

"No idea on either count," Lily said as she hopped up to perch on the counter. Gramma Potter. Lily thought she was going to bust up laughing. It was true, sure, but Lily was half her dad's age and looked nothing at all like gramma Molly.

It was just about then that Lily and Harry came down and headed into the guest room. Lily waited until her father had emerged before directing his attention to their ... guest.
