Summary: Cass and the Aurors arrive at the scene of the village of Lisa's celebration.
The smell was the first thing that hit him. The unmistakable smell of blood, death and burnt hair and flesh, strong enough to nearly make him throw up before he'd managed to get a charm in place to push the worst of it away. No charm would ever be strong enough to push it all away, and nothing would put the effects of what faced them as they approached the town.
He'd been heading out to practice his flying when the alarm came in, and as it was so close, he'd flown rather than bothered with portkeys or Apparaition points. Yet the scene that greeted them, made him wish he'd acted differently. The stakes, all around the perimeter of the village, the faces of the men – the burned or crumbled houses between them.
And in all of it – the stench of death.
Taking a deep breath, he dismounted, looking at those with him, his eyes turning to Kornell, still not a year in training. He looked deathly pale, as if he was about to faint, or throw up, or most likely both.
'Kornell, go back and alarm the others,' he said, only to see Kornell bend over and empty the contents of his stomach on the ground. He approached him. 'Hey, kid, this isn't your scene, go back, tell the others to come back, then stay at the office, all right?' he asked, receiving a grateful nod from Kornell before the boy took his broom and headed off. Cass sighed, cleaning up the vomit with a flick of his wand before turning back, realising that the downside to sending Kornell off was not having anything or anyone distract him from the crime scene.
Well might as well get it over with. 'Let's go,' he said with a sigh. 'Looks like we'll be here all day.' Fucking hell he hated the Death Eaters at times. Perhaps aiming to kill on Saturday wouldn't be such a bad thing after all?
