How was your day, dear?
Who: K'rin, Kenzie
When: Evening after bad Fall/meeting with Weyrleader and Weyrwoman
Where: K'rin and Valoth's weyr
Summary: K'rin returns home to wash away the stresses of Threadfall and post-Fall meeting. Kenzie arrives to help put the day to rest.
K’rin was still in his bathing chamber scrubbing the sweat and stench from his skin when he heard Kenzie’s voice call his name from the large hallway between ledge and dragon couch. He wiped water from his eyes and blinked blearily at the far wall. Valoth?
She is good for you. You are good for her. You have both had bad days.
He sighed and worked faster, watching the soot-clouded water travel towards the hole on the far side of the chamber where the warm water was continuously recycled. He’d managed to haul himself out of the pool and get a towel around his waist by the time the healer peeked into the room, muscles somewhat relaxed by the warm water. He offered her a tired twitch of the lips and started towards her. “Meddling dragon,” he muttered without any feeling. His arm caught on Kenzie’s shoulders as he passed her. “I hadn’t expected you to actually come. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to put this day to bed. It’s gone on long enough.” It was barely past nightfall, but given that Thread had fallen before noon and everything that had followed he considered it a very long day.
The Weyrleader’s aggressive attitude, the surprise and excess strain of the Weyrwoman inserting herself into the meeting-which, he had to admit, probably helped his situation-his de-briefing on the weyrlings’ work during fall and another lecture about his poor training techniques and the shoddy quality of the weyrlings he was turning out. It had grated on K’rin’s nerves, but he’d clenched his jaw and stood still for the verbal lashing before the bronze rider had finally run out of steam and dismissed him.
He had gone by S’bor’s office to see if the Weyrlingmaster was there but the man had already left for the day. Typical that he’d let his second take the fall and gone home to bed his latest willing lower caverns girl before he could listen to the report on what had happened in the infirmary and in the council room. The man was nothing if not self-involved. He’d fallen a shockingly long way since he’d trained K’rin up as a weyrling all those turns ago.
K’rin could feel himself tensing up again as he replayed the events of the day. All of that and he hadn’t even had the opportunity to dress down that sharding, wherry-headed, useless hatchling of a rider. “You didn’t have to come, you know. Unless you need me for comforting and soothing,” he teased Kenzie, trying to inject some energy into it. It fell flat, but he gave her his best smirk and hoped for the best. He was tired and still irritable, which went completely against his normal attitude and was therefore all that much more exhausting. He just wanted to crawl into bed and drag Kenzie up against him and block out the world. Tomorrow he’d have to be up early enough to line up the weyrlings for their post-Fall briefing and he’d prefer to be back in his right mind for that. They weren’t getting these sorts of d as often any more now that the dragons were all pretty much at their mature size, but this disaster of a Threadfall definitely deserved a going-over.
K’rin rubbed his palm up and down Kenzie’s shoulder and pressed a kiss to the crown of her head, inhaling and closing his eyes. He realized belatedly that she was the one steering him, and he was content to let her guide him to the bedchamber. “I’m glad you came.”
