If Clary hadn't already been concerned about Alec, she definitely would have been now. She had just come into the kitchen to grab a bottle of water and she couldn't believe what she was seeing. She knew he wasn't handling the break from Magnus very well and Clary couldn't blame him for that. She knew his pain. She longed to be with Jace and up until Alec had come forward and said that they were not brother and sister, she knew it could never happen. Even now that they knew the truth, things were a little awkward.
But this was not about her and Jace. This was about Alec. Clary tried to think of another time she had seen him so unkempt as he was now. Sometimes he trained shirtless, sure. But his hair was a mess and he just generally looked tired and like he'd seen better days. She knew he was hurting but it wasn't until that moment in the kitchen that she could see how much.
Clary was an affectionate person. She knew Alec wasn't, but she wanted to comfort him the only way she could. Without saying a word, she walked over and quickly embraced him. If Alec weren't gay and Jace walked in right now, they might have some explaining to do. But Clary wanted Alec to know she was here for him. And she knew how he felt because it wasn't that long ago she was pining after a guy she couldn't have because he was her brother. Their situations were vastly different, but the pain was similar.
She took a step back to look at him after a moment. "You look exhausted."
