Who: Robert Drayton.
What: Oh bother. Damn you elevators!
Where: The elevator.
When: Today in the evening.
Warnings: None at the moment.
Notes:

Unlike most of the current tenants in the building, Robert didn't know nor cared about the events that transpired between themselves. Having just moved in, he could already see his original intent and hope that it would be a quiet building were dashed. Far move from where I was, he thought. In all reality, he hadn't wanted to move. Going away from what he deemed to be his home base gave him a weird unsettled feeling in a way no one else could. But he had to. It was the best decision for his music and more producers were willing to sign in New York than Memphis (waaay too many blues players out there).

Speaking of which, it was time for him to go to the studio and practice. Hopefully he would be able to record a few sessions, listen to the end result and get one step closer to making a full-fledge demo.

So he stepped into the elevator from the second floor, pressed for the ground floor, and waited. The car began to slide down then paused, as though it was thinking, before moving up. It reached halfway between the fourth and fifth floor before stopping altogether, the regular lights switching off to the emergency lights. Staring, he pressed the ground floor.

Nothing.

So he pressed another floor.

Still nothing.

"Well shit," he muttered.

After pressing all the buttons on the panel (nope, nothing), he searched for a phone, but thanks to the miracle of antique elevators, it seemed when people were stuck in elevators back then they just sat in a corner and waited to die. Since Robert didn't enjoy the idea of screaming and wailing, he merely banged on the door once before settling on the floor, pulling out his harmonica from his jacket pocket, and began playing a tune which sounded suspiciously like Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues. Someone will need to use the elevator eventually. Then he'd get out.

Hopefully.

"My apartment?" Crest kid teeth pulled with languid amusement on an unpainted lower lip.

"How do I know you're not some madman? I mean, you just happened to have a crowbar lying around.." She made it sound suspicious, eyes fashioning into slits of speculation before she straightened at mention of her business.

"Shimmying down elevator shafts, although I've yet to perfect my escape act." Spoken like some lady Houdini. Confessing that she at least lived on a higher floor than this, if she really climbed down an elevator cable in true ninja style.

"As did you," he said, gesturing to her crowbar with his own. "You could easily be a clever madwoman."

"You escaped pretty well, from what I saw." Her easy, lithe pull out of the elevator had been sort of impressive, more than he tended to expect from people who got themselves into situations like being stuck in elevator cars after failed rescue attempts.

"Maybe I am." She put her weight against the crowbar like it was nothing more than a burlesque prop. A black steel cane to sashay with. While she might have been maddening, she didn't look like much of a madwoman, though.

"You weren't so bad yourself." Sure, climbing out of the top of the elevator had been peachy. But she didn't think she would have been tall enough to pry open the third floor door from the inside, crowbar or not. Getting inside had been the easy part.

"I wouldn't be surprised," he countered, thinking of all the madwomen the building already had to deal with. She didn't seem mad, though, a little too sure of herself for that to be the case. It wasn't a negative thing, however. It kept his attention, more than he could say for most.

"Practice," he said, inclining his head affirmatively, like he'd been working on his elevator escapes for years, now. Alright, so he'd done one or two--still, those hadn't really been rescues of the people inside. Quite the opposite, in fact.

James didn't mind being a perceived as a potential madwoman, it was better than the bored underestimation he'd first given her. "This superman hobby of your's must be pretty time consuming.."

She'd heard the elevator was fucked, there were probably many people to be saved. Before they learned their lesson and just settled for the stairs, anyway. James didn't really think that was how he spent his quiet nights in, but she didn't completely discount it either. The woman was armed with a smile that rivaled the crowbar in cool intensity, stepping just past him en route to the stairs. "I guess that means I'll be seeing you around the building a lot more then.."

Turning faintly as she spoke, her stardust eyes made the words more of a question than a statement.

"It is," he said. Not the right pick for an analogy. Superman had issues with killing, if he remembered correctly.

He caught her gaze. Color him interested. He felt an unfamiliar willingness to follow her where she went--very strange. "If you manage to get stuck in the elevator a few times a week," he said.

"I'll do my best to resist the temptation." Getting trapped in the elevator for a good fifteen minutes hadn't been a blast. Thankfully, she'd brought a snack. But still, James imagined she'd have ripped the box into shredded wires and panels if she'd been stuck in there for an hour or more. Some cats don't do well in confined spaces.

James paused in her approach of the stairs, still quite near him. "Besides, you should let me return the favor at least once. Lock yourself out of your car sometime, yeah? I'm wicked with working a coat hanger."

He lost part of what she said, because a draft from up the stairs wafted her scent over to him. She smelled clean but not too clean, something darker lurking beneath something very feminine. Flowers, sweetness, musk...leather?

He turned and walked toward the stairs after her. Well, he had to go up as well anyway, and he obviously couldn't take the elevator. "I don't own one," he said. "Maybe I can lock myself out of my apartment for you instead."

"Well, I don't have much experience in popping the locks on apartment doors." Sidling alongside him when Shane reached the stairs, James kept on par with his steps.

"I suppose I could kick it in for you." She seemed fairly confident of her SWAT team abilities. Perhaps it was like him and his elevator rescues, due to some curious element of practice.

"Shall we try?" Less than serious, but casting a dangerous shift of her eyes his way.

He was entertaining the idea of her kicking his door in when her last question stopped him. He wasn't sure exactly what that meant--he was, however, fairly sure it wasn't entirely literal. "We could," he said evenly, meeting her gaze for a moment before shifting it back up the stairs. "I have a little experience with it, personally." Three times, now. He was going to be an expert if things kept up at this rate.

She glanced at Shane in a quiet kind of appraisal when he mentioned his experience. She assumed that pertained to breaking into apartments and not kicking doors in. After all, kicking in a door didn't take as much skillful experience as it did determination.

"Show me." Her voice went soft, but it wasn't a question.

They were on the landing of the fifth floor, now. He had no idea where her apartment was, exactly, but her tone and that flash of her eyes was making him want to find it. Now. Or maybe just forget about it entirely. Still, his was only a floor away. "Are you willing to climb another floor to get there?" he asked, taking a step towards her. More and more the landing felt like an appropriate place...

To do what, exactly? He wasn't sure. The thought jarred him a little but he didn't move away, watching her to see what she would do.

His step ventured dangerous with it's proximity, but James didn't slink away. Even if something in his tone made her question if they were still talking about going secret agent on a locked door. She watched Shane for a brief moment, extremely conscious of how quiet the landing was around them. James lifted her chin, eyes sweeping the spiral of stairs that reached into the unknown above. "I think I'll live through another climbing another floor."

Her gaze migrated back to Shane slowly. "Will you?"

"I think so," he said, moving past her and up the stairs, shaking himself free of her gaze. She was...well, not at all what he'd expected when he'd gone to the elevator for his rescue attempt. He was all too aware of her just a step behind him, her scent and her light breathing distancing him from himself. He stepped out onto the sixth floor, and it was only a short walk to 601 after that.

Her eyes trailed him when he stepped past her, the rest of her body turning to follow. This last flight of stairs seemed to go by so much more quickly, and when James found herself in the 6th floor hallway, there was a subtle grin tuning the curve of her mouth.

"601." She considered the door number with thoughtful musing. Was this his? Did he live directly above her? James settled her hip into the wall beside the front door, preparing to be keenly observant for whatever magic trick he was about to perform.

He glanced over at her, curious. "What?" he asked, reaching for the door.

The door to Shane's apartment was rigged very slightly, had been since he'd moved into the building. He rattled the doorknob in demonstration to prove it was locked, then wrapped his hand around it, pressing against one of the screws and turning it.

The door popped open, and he turned back to her. "Magic. I didn't even have to kick it in."

"Nothing." Erasing her amusement with a serene focus, lips pressed to eradicate the knowing smile she'd displayed. James shook her head and watched Shane work.

When the door clicked open, after having obviously been locked only a second before, James tilted her head. Her eyes were bright with enough curiosity to kill a cat. Leaning in a little to give a brief examination to the doorknob, smelling like a fresh smash of berries and the supple side of leather.

"I'm impressed." Something in her voice said she wasn't usually.

That close she smelled like danger on the rocks, but he couldn't bring himself to pull back. "Glad to hear I was able to meet your standards," he said, smiling a little. The door was open, inviting her inside if she chose to take initiative. He still had his hand on the knob, but he was watching her with intense interest and barely restrained curiosity. What was it about her that made her different from every other woman he'd met in this building?

She could tell without words that Shane was inviting her in, they seemed to be on the plane where body language spoke octaves higher than anything they actually said. James straightened, meeting his eyes with an equal dose of fascination.

She shouldn't. The cautionary side of her would have never set foot inside a strange man's apartment. But her own curiosity was there in spades, and after what seemed to be a long stretch of silence, James stepped into 601.

It took him a long moment to follow after. There was a chorus of voices in his head telling him that this was wrong, that he should be thinking about Boyd, that he didn't want things like this. He never did.

Apparently that wasn't true, however, because he found himself following her inside and shutting the door behind him. He had no idea why he wanted this, wanted her, so badly, but every time he tried to pin it down he would be distracted by her again and he would lose whatever conclusion he'd drawn. Logic just wasn't going to work on this one.

She infiltrated the apartment with a few steps, leaving that crowbar against the wall near the door. Her movement was a thing all it's own, a formidable symphony of sinew and bone. "Have you lived here long?"

Tilting a glance over her shoulder at him with the question.

"A few months," he said. More than a few. He'd stayed here longer than he'd stayed anywhere in quite some time, and now that he'd ceased his previous occupation, might be here for some time longer. "You?" The apartment was a bit spare but well-furnished, with several locked cabinets on the walls in the living room. There wasn't much sitting out, really--a discarded, half-full mug of coffee, papers scattered across the coffee table, a computer humming in the corner. There was nothing in the apartment to give any real personal touches--no photos, souvenirs, none of the usual detritus that accumulated while busy being a human living in a space. He was watching her move, watching the sharp corner of her shoulder blade jut out as she turned.

"A few days." Her answer was simple, a reflection of his own. Eyes pinned Shane with a disabling amount of potency, holding him there with an unspoken question before she glanced back to the apartment. It was neat and impersonal, quiet in an unsettling way. That was why she'd asked the question, it would have made sense to have learned that he'd recently moved in.

She wasn't an interior decorator or a psychologist, but even a stripper could tell that his apartment spoke of a no-nonsense approach. "I see methodical.. and serious."

Even if James was dissecting him, her smile was lighthearted. Teeth drawing on the edge of her lip with consideration over this great equation. It was a gesture that's sexuality James didn't seem aware of. Which meant, she was probably actually very aware. "What else are you, Shane?"

"That would explain why I've never noticed you before," he said, eyes lingering on her bitten lip.

"Accurate," he said. There was no denying that. He smiled a little. "You'll have to figure that out on your own," he said. "If I just told you, you might get bored with me."

"Well played," she laughed. Men very rarely held anything back, it was all pompous bullshit or nervous chatter trying to fill in the blanks. James didn't mind having to work for what she wanted, assuming she wanted to know more about Shane. Which, she suddenly and avidly insisted to herself, might not be the case.

"Well, Shane." Taking a seat on the very edge of his coffee table, she didn't bother to investigate the papers scattered behind her. One dark legging'd knee crossed the other.

"When was the last time you did something for the fun of it?" The storm of her eyes was questioning. While James had climbed down the elevator for kicks, Shane had seemed rather annoyed with the endeavor. She wondered if that reflected much of his life.
