Who: Xavier and Gina
What: The once-fiancees have awkward fun times as they settle into living together again.
Where: 1003
When: Sometime after Gina moved in but before the masquerade
Warnings: We'll see!

Having Gina as a roommate threw Xavier off more than he liked to admit. Her hours at the hospital kept her busy and fairly unpredictable. He stayed up until she came back late each night, faking sleep until she settled in. More often than not, he stayed awake listening to the sound of her breathing in the other room, falling asleep as she rose again. It was a reversed schedule that worked well enough, for now.

When he wasn't watching for Gina, Xavier was at work on his plans. Things were advanced and moved up. He hadn't planned on taking care of Mr. Patrick Delaney for another few months, but with Gina and Lucas knowing what they did...it had to be taken care of. His death was planned for the night after the masquerade, as he expected most everyone in the building to be out of it that day. If his plans went accordingly, the proper people would on edge as well. A note with a picture of Delaney would be sent to Lucas, along with a reminder.

Perhaps mimicking horror movies wasn't the best of ideas - but Xavier did believe in increasing suspense.

The second man would of course need to be moved up as well. Benjamin Parker would have a nice accident in a month. The only issue was getting Lucas there to witness it - as Xavier was avoiding him temporarily. He didn't want questions on Gina, nor about the Count. He could only increase his financial resume, push through some emails from 'friends' that Lucas taking Xavier's money was a good deal and that he should sign the contracts, tying things up immediately. The fact that Xavier would never follow through...was a small issue. He wanted to find Gina a divorce attorney first.

He did find one eventually, one who was discreet and could take some subtle hints to look at criminal history when accompanied by cash. After finding him, Xavier left a note out on the kitchen table, in case Gina swung by while he was in the shower, saying that he'd found what he was looking for. Vagueness was an old habit that he couldn't shake off. Humming slightly with the feeling that plans were falling into place, he took off for the bathroom.

The days after Gina had started staying in 1003 were strained, yet at least functional. Though Gina had yet to make up her mind on all this - really, not thinking about it was the only way she could come up with to remain passably sane - one thing was for certain: this was far better than staying with Lucas. Edward-Xavier frightened her at times, and she found herself constantly tripping over her lingering affections and identity confusion, but at least he wasn't a monster. He let her stay with him even when he probably should have just banished her to a cardboard box outside.

On this particular day, she lurched through the front door with her duffel bag hanging off her shoulder and an exhausted expression etched in her face. It had been a long day at work. She left the apartment at six o'clock in the morning, and it was easily more than twelve hours later. Her hair was still soaking wet from the quick shower she had taken at the hospital, as there was no way she was driving back to Bellum while covered in child vomit.

Dragging her duffel to the guest bedroom, she threw it onto the bed and stared at it for a moment. She wasn't sure what she wanted to do. There was a persisting numbness in her head that she just couldn't shake, and it was starting to annoy her. Well. As much as it could, with all that blankness.

She shuffled into the kitchen, intent on making up for her missed lunch hour. As she reached for one of the cabinets, a note caught her eye. She picked it up and read it, brow creasing as she finished. And what exactly was he looking for? The Holy Grail? The meaning of life? Laundry detergent? He had always been vague, but now, it was getting a little ridiculous. Massaging her temples with one hand, she walked with the note into the rest of the apartment.

"Ed-" She paused. Gina still didn't know what to call him. "Nnnnngh," she finished, raising her voice so that the sound could be heard in the apartment. He wasn't in his bedroom, or his study, or the living room. Leaning against the bathroom door, she rapped on it. "Would you mind being more specific, please?" she called, jiggling the door handle. Without waiting for a response, she opened the door and slid a hand inside, waving the note around for him to see. She was still safely on the other side of the door, not violating his privacy, though her hand invading the bathroom was probably not exactly respectful of boundaries.

She entered the bathroom, just as he was turning the water on. It hissed to life, spraying the tiles and his arm as he nearly got in - and was stopped by her voice. Somehow he'd missed he entering the apartment. For decency's sake, he grabbed a towel and wrapped it around his hips before heading to the door. He opened it a bit more, grimacing slightly.

Considering the fact that they used to live with each other and spent an equal amount of time naked in their apartment as dressed, they'd managed to avoid this awkwardness. For one thing - he wasn't going to make a move on her, not matter what he felt for her still. For another, she was still married. However ridiculously.

"I found a lawyer for you," he said simply. Switching to his American accent was taking practice, but at least he was doing better. With no illusions or prosthetics, he was simply himself at this moment.

Hormones were the devil. Gina realized this. Despite the fact that she had been in a fit of depression and angst for quite some time that didn't seem to have any hope of getting better, she couldn't help her line of sight as he opened the door. Yes, hormones were evil, and she couldn't help it. Gina believed in the separation of love and lust. You could love somebody without lusting for them, and lust for someone without loving them. But with Edward, the two had always been very intimately connected. And despite the fact that he was apparently Xavier now, despite the fact that she was still married, she couldn't separate herself from those feelings.

She stared for a long moment before dragging her gaze up to his face. "Oh," she said, able to remain fairly nonchalant without being awkward. "Thank you." She paused, folding up the note and tucking it in her pocket. "Sorry for interrupting you."

There was a pause as he realized she was staring. Oh. Well, if he'd seen her in a similar state of undress...Xavier banished that thought immediately. He couldn't - wouldn't follow it. He'd had twelve years to avoid thinking of those thoughts. It didn't help. He gave a tight smile, the hand at the towel clenching tightly. Which probably didn't help draw her eyes away.

"It's fine. I was just getting in-" And he winced. In another time, in another place, that would have been a cue for something else entirely. Which led to another bad train of thoughts and...he should really shut the door now before he did anything else that made this worse. As he'd hate to have driven her to moving out. "I'll be out quickly and tell you what I found."

And he knew she was staring. Great. The way he tensed and clenched was obvious enough, though the actions only drew her gaze once again to the waistline of his towel. She sighed, reaching up to rub her forehead. Bad thoughts, Gina, bad thoughts. But she could deal with them. Sexual tension wasn't the end of the world. You just had to know how to be smart about it.

"No, this could have waited, I'm sorry." She dropped her hand to wave at him. "Go, go enjoy your shower. I need to eat something, do you want me to cook for both of us?"

His smile tightened and he slipped off - he wouldn't shut the door on her face as that was rude. He expected her to make the final move to shut it and after heading to the opposite end of the bathroom, dropped the towel and climbed into the shower. A hand reached for the dial, turning the water to ice cold. Getting rid of any thoughts about Gina was his priority now. Getting clean was...just a bonus here.

She'd take that as a yes. She usually did. Edward had never been the most demonstrative person, and he only really seemed to voice things when he was saying "no" to something. He rarely asked for things, and he tended to avoid accepting offers. So Gina tended to assume he wanted something until he said "no." Not really the best logic - wasn't that a definition of rape? - but it worked for them.

As he left the door open, she went to close it when she was distracted by the towel dropping. She stared for a long moment, appreciating the bare view from behind, before covering her eyes with one hand and closing the door quickly.

Get it together, Gina. The guy probably hated you now after all the shit he'd been through, and he was only letting you stay so you didn't do something retarded and get him caught. Leaning against the door, she took a deep breath, eyes closed. Count to five. Release. Done.

Opening her eyes, she peeled away from the door and walked briskly to the kitchen to make them both a simple pasta dish.

Twenty minutes later, Xavier left the shower with that same towel around his waist. Without so much as a glance towards the kitchen he headed for his bedroom and changing into a wife-beater and a pair of pajama bottoms. He didn't plan on going anywhere this evening - in fact, it was a rare night 'off'. He might do some work into finding a costume for that masquerade...but otherwise, he planned on keeping his thoughts off of Gina and relaxing.

He stopped at the study, grabbing his print-out on the lawyer before returning to the kitchen. "Smells good," he said, idly.

Looking up from the stove, she smiled faintly. "Good," she replied. She did her best to refrain from appraising the state of his bare arms, instead turning to the stove and stirring the pasta. She had taken his shower time to change herself, wanting nothing to do with the clothes she had worn anywhere near the hospital that day. Her damp hair was pulled up in a loose twist, and she donned a baggy T-shirt and loose sweatpants. Yep, totally unsexy clothes. If she felt like a lump, maybe her hormones would just give it a rest, already.

"It's almost done." She paused, looking over at him again. She considered asking if he wanted to sit down and eat it together, but couldn't voice the question. Instead, her gaze fell to the paper in his hand. "Is that on the lawyer?" she asked.

Maybe he was an idiot - maybe he simply had never gotten over her - but if she walked by him in a paper bag with insults of how she hated him scribbled across it, Xavier would have still thought Gina beautiful. Clothes didn't have much to do with it at this point.

"Great." He leaned against the counter, waving the paper between two fingers. "It is. He seems to have a good reputation and knows when and how to keep quiet." Accompanied by some extra cash. "You can look over his past cases on here, plus his contact info. He takes appointments during the week."

"That's wonderful," she said softly, turning to him and taking the paper. She didn't know too much about legal things beyond everything that could get her sued in the hospital. Divorce law was foreign to her. But he was right - he seemed legitimate, at least on this piece of paper. Setting it down on the counter, she looked up to him with a smile. "Thank you," she said genuinely. "I...I really appreciate your doing this for me. I'll call him in the morning and set one up. I just...I just have to get out. I don't want a big thing, I don't want to drag it out. I just want...to be gone."

She sighed, turning back to the stove and stirring the pasta. "Would you...like me to get you a bowl to take back to your study, or..." She paused, biting down on her lower lip as she turned to look at him. "Do you want to stay here and...eat with me?"

He couldn't help but be amused by how eager she was to divorce Lucas. A soft chuckle escaped him and Xavier shook his head. "Thank you. He's had good results, he should have things taken care of. Though of course you'll need to tell Lucas..." His laugh died off and his smile flattened. Ah yes. It all led back to him - but drawn out could make things better. Or would the knowledge that Gina was leaving him be enough? Would he kill himself like Fernand had?

Did Xavier even want that?

Her question jolted him from his thoughts and he nodded. "We can - we can eat together, can't we?" It was unsure and he glanced up at her to see if it was alright. "If it's alright with you."

She sighed as he mentioned Lucas. "Yeah," she said, frowning. "I will." He was going to be furious. She was almost afraid of what his temper would do. Cringing, she went back to the pasta, throwing a bit more salt onto it for taste. "Just...I want to have a plan before I do. Just to be safe."

At his reaction, she smiled, glancing to him over her shoulder. "Of course it is. If it wasn't, I'd have just put your food in the bowl and told you to get out of the kitchen." She paused, realizing that even joking about that when she was essentially crashing in his place was so very rude. Blushing in embarrassment, she looked down. "I'm sorry. That wasn't funny."

He didn't miss her look and his expression hardened. "Plans are always good." If Lucas did anything else to her, he'd suffer. Simple as that. Xavier moved to busy himself with setting the table, gathering silverware and napkins from a cabinet to distract himself.

"No, it was-" He offered a slight smile before moving to the table. "I don't mind company either. Most meals are due to plans - there isn't much time to relax during those."

At his confirmation of how good plans are, she merely nodded. They were. Gina was an emotional person, but she wasn't stupid. She looked before leaping, always. She wasn't about to try something as big as divorce without having a full plan laid out ahead.

As he set the table, she moved to protest before realizing she had to finish off the food. Turning the stove off, she poured the pasta dish into a larger bowl, mixing it together with the simple stirfry she had made to go over it. Glancing over at him as she picked up the bowl, she walked over to set it down. "Well then I insist that for right now, there's no plans. Only relaxing." She offered a risky smile, almost afraid that it would offend him. "I was thrown up on by a six-year-old today. This idea appeals to me a lot."

"I can manage that," he said, tossing a smile back at her. The detail of her day made him pause, before a curious expression crossed his face. "That doesn't sound...pleasant. At all."

He finished setting the table as she brought the bowl over. The fridge was raided for a bottle of white wine and two glasses. "I propose a toast then. To your future divorce." And further headway on revenge.

His expression made her laugh lightly and she nodded. "It really wasn't. It's why I showered there, I didn't want to bring smelly kid vomit here." At least she was a considerate annoying houseguest.

The presentation of wine and two glasses made her smile, and she couldn't help laughing again at his toast proposal. It was probably terrible of her, but at this point, she couldn't care. She and Lucas had been grating on each other for a while, and to now find out that she was justified in thinking he was a self-centered jerk was both overwhelming and a release.

"Yes," she said with a nod. "May it be swift and complete."

"I thank you," he said, grinning at her. "I prefer to keep this place vomit free." It was a good rule to have in general. He'd had to clean it up after a...session before. Incredibly traumatic. For the person who's vomit it was.

He poured it out, passing hers carefully - not letting his hand touch hers. There was a faint nod, before he took his seat and sipped it.

"I will enforce that rule," she said with a return smile.

As he passed over the glass, she noted that their fingers were kept at odds the entire time. A slight wrinkle creased her brow, and her smile vanished. It was so hard, realizing that she was slipping back into those old habits around him. She had to remind herself that Edward had changed. He'd seen Hell, and to act like everything was the same would be an insult.

Sitting down in her chair as well, she took a sip of the wine and set it down. "It's very good," she remarked as she spooned a bit of the pasta onto her plate. Handing the spoon over to him, she offered a fragile smile. "It, uh...just occurred to me." She cleared her throat, looking down at the table. "That the story I told you, the night we went out to dinner..." He knew which one. It was obvious. "I'm really sorry if that was...TMI..."

He settled in his seat, taking only the barest sips of the wine. "I try for the best," he said with a simple shrug. He placed it on the table, taking the bowl from her with a narrowing of the eyes. Her statement was ignored as he realized how little she had taken. "What? Gina, is that rally all you're going to eat..."

Oh. Wait. was she talking about that? Xavier bit his lip to keep from laughing, shaking his head. He scooped out a healthy portion of pasta onto his plate before passing it back. "You have no idea what good news that was. I nearly told you everything, right then."

As he pressed her on her portion size, she shook her head. "I'll take some more later," she said. Which might not have been a lie. Her appetite simple hadn't been what it used to be lately, and the thought of gorging on food always made her fear that she'd spontaneously vomit when this whole mess finally hit her. It was an irrational fear, she realized, but it was so very hard to shake.

She could see him bite his lip, and that made her giggle as he admitted that she hadn't broken his brain with too much information. "Oh good," she sighed, twisting some pasta around her fork and taking a bite. "I just realized that it must've been really weird to hear that about...yourself." Her cheeks tinged pink just slightly. "Especially when it happened quite frequently."

He let it slide for now, though he intended to watch her later. The last thing he needed was for her to collapse from malnutrition - while under his roof. Mouth twisting slightly, he sipped his drink again.

"It did?" Xavier couldn't help it. No, they weren't grown people talking about sexual habits. For a moment they were college students, laughing over whatever foolish mistake had happened last. But the moment vanished quickly leaving with the reality - and odd, dark humor of the situation. His eyes left hers - awkward again - as he said, "I was...happy to hear I left such an impression."

And this would be where in a perfect world, he'd say he had the same issue. The truth was much more awkward - there had never been anyone but Gina.

And suddenly things were horribly awkward. But Gina didn't like awkward, especially when it concerned feelings. After all, feelings were important and needed to be shared. No matter how difficult and painful they might be.

"Well," she started, taking a slow breath. "It's probably because I've always loved you. And never stopped." Most people would feel vulnerable after saying this, and though Gina definitely wrapped an arm around herself for comfort, she didn't regret this. If Edward-Xavier had told her about all this, then the least she could do was come out and admit that she still had feelings for him.

To an extent, that wasn't unexpected. Xavier remained froze though, hand hovering over his fork as the words repeated themselves in his mind. Obviously she still had feelings - regret, lingering lust - and so on, afterwards. He'd recognized that and aside from in their dream, hadn't taken advantage of them. Not when he was certain he was the only one still pining over the one lost twelve years ago.

But she said she still loved him. Hadn't stopped. His stomach clenched and he opened his mouth to speak - once, twice, three times before managing a- "Oh?" It was quiet, the worst thing he could say. He couldn't look at her. Couldn't think.

How could she?

Xavier pushed his chair back, muttering an 'excuse me' that somehow ended up in Russian instead of English. He corrected it immediately before stumbling into his office. The door slammed shut behind him, followed by two crashes.

Well shit.

As he stood and hurried out, mixing up English with another language - Russian? - she stared after him, eyes wide. Well. Maybe honesty wasn't always the best policy. Pushing her chair away from the table, she hurried after him. Though the sound of crashing frightened her, she didn't pull back. She had screwed this up, and she was going to at least try and smooth things over. Either that, or she'd pack up her things and find somewhere else to stay.

"Ed-" She cursed mentally. Biting on her lower lip, she knocked on the door. "Xavier?" Knocking on the door, she rested a hand on the knob. Without asking permission, she stepped inside, expression worried. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that, it was out of line."

He hadn't expected her to follow him - avoidance seemed their strategy these days - and another vase had been picked up, ready to hurl at the wall. Shards of blue and white ceramic were already scattered across the floor. Stepping in his bare feet, in a practiced movement around them he motioned for her to Get the fuck out. He couldn't think straight, he couldn't - he couldn't -

Xavier shut his eyes and took a deep breath. The vase lowered to his side and he forced himself to walk to the niche on the wall and place it back where it belonged. "It - it's fine." No. It wasn't. Clearly. He took another deep breath before turning back and seeing her expression.

There was a pause before he went with fuck this. He strode towards her, one arm going around her back and the other to her head. Twelve years of emotion was put into the kiss; wariness, rage, and longing mixing into it.

She stared, wide-eyed, at the office. Her heart was thudding in her chest, and for a moment she didn't know what to do. It seemed that lately, everything around her broke. She was a bad luck charm. This poor man had been put through hell, and there she was making it worse. Clutching the doorway with one hand, she took a tentative step forwards as she looked down at the ceramic shards.

Edward's temper had always been a slight point of contention between them. Gina rarely got angry, while it took little to send Edward over the edge. During stressful times - exams, mostly - these differences created a grating friction between them. And the way he snapped at the trial was, really, the final nail in the coffin for her - seeing him rage like that had frightened her beyond comprehension.

Her gaze snapped to the vase in his hand, and she cringed. Would he throw it? Thankfully, he lowered it, spitting out an obvious lie. Even Gina knew it wasn't okay. She considered correcting him, but held her tongue as he put the vase away with tension in every muscle.

As he finally turned to her, her expression softened into concern and guilt. "I'm so sorry," she whispered. It was silly, she knew. What was one apology to twelve years of suffering? But it was all she could say. As he approached swiftly, she stayed rooted to the spot. She looked up at him when he reached her, eyes wide, and for a moment she wanted to say something.

Then he cut her off.

She reacted immediately. Her arms wrapped around his neck as she pressed against his front, returning the kiss greedily. The moment consumed her, swallowed her whole and possessed her completely. She was a lightning rod for guilt, sorrow, passion, and need. Her fingers clenched in the back of his wifebeater, a harsh handhold that allowed her to press closer to his chest. Everything else had disappeared - this kiss was all that she knew.

Dreams and fantasies didn't compare to this. This was real and he could truly feel her against him. He could tell that her breathing mirrored his own, rough as their movements became desperate. He poured out emotion and she received it. The awkwardness over the last few days was ignored for more important matters - how much he'd missed her over the last twelve years, everything he kept to himself, and that even if he'd stormed off, he still had, did, and always would feel the same towards her. Even believing she'd betrayed him didn't change that.

His hands moved from where they were to small of her back, then pulling her closer towards him. Movements were blind as he tugged at her baggy shirt, needing skin, contact, comfort - everything she was offering and hadn't had in twelve years. Breaking away from her mouth for a moment, he whispered hoarsely, "It's only ever been you."

She was running out of oxygen and she didn't care. The kiss was her oxygen. She could live on this for eternity, sustained solely by the passion and emotion that ran through both of them. Rationality should have been telling her that this was wrong. They were a thing of the past, a couple that ceased to be in a fucked-up situation that should have kept them at opposite ends of the globe.

And yet there they were.

As he grappled with her shirt, she didn't protest. Her hips shifted from side to side, a wriggling motion that offered a subtle and silent invitation. One of her hands slid through his hair, gripping the base of his neck to hold him firmly against her lips.

The kiss broke, leaving her gasping for air as she leaned her forehead against his chin. His whisper filled her with a mixture of guilt - how could she have been so stupid? - and love. Both palms smoothed the path between his shoulders and neck, halting to grip him longingly.

"You're the only one that ever mattered," she said, looking up at him with watery eyes. "And the only one that still does." People came and went. Even her family was, to a degree, transient to her. Her father was in and out of prison now, in and out of rehab, in and out of AA meetings. Her mother wasn't always there, and her sisters were just as flaky. But Edward had always been there, at all times. He was a rock. "You still make me feel like a lovestruck teenager."

A hand moved up from her hip, trailing up the side before he placed his hand on her cheek. Though he wouldn't have admitted it or even was aware of his, his eyes were just as wet as hers - too much happening now to keep the tears from appearing. "Those were the days," he breathed, before shaking his head again.

He pulled her towards him again, hand moving from her cheek a moment later. It moved down, pulling her up and toward him. Old movements that were still familiar, twelve years later. Had she left the door open behind her? Xavier didn't care, caught between kissing her and carrying her off. His lips from her mouth to her cheek, the nape of her neck, her nose - anything, he couldn't help himself.

"Gina-" He couldn't even finish the sentence, moving back to kiss her again. At a certain point, words could only do so much.

The sensation of his hands on her body was old and familiar. It was as if they had never been apart, never been put on pause. As he commented on the old days, she let him pull her close. One arm hooked around his neck while the other hand rested on his shoulder, aiding him in hoisting her up slightly. Her leg lifted, knee brushing the outer side of his.

"We still have life left in us," she breathed in response, keening in joy as he peppered her skin with kisses. Her fingers slid through his hair, pausing as he said her name.

She returned the kiss full force, letting her body do the talking. It was much more articulate than she was at the moment, anyway.

Xavier continued towards the bedroom, an elbow swinging out here and there to get them in without hurting her. He wouldn't let that happen now - or ever. As he kissed her, he hoped that she understood that - even without words. No matter what his other plans were, no matter what he had done or been accused of, he wouldn't let anything happen to her. He'd fix things as best as he could. He would just do it in his way.

The door to the bedroom was kicked shut behind them, dinner long forgotten. He tore his lips from hers long enough to tug at her shirt, pulling it up and between them if she allowed it. But even that break of contact - after everything - was too long without his lips on hers and he recaptured them soon after.

Navigating the hall while staying preoccupied with his lips wasn't easy, but Gina had practice. She felt about with a foot before taking a step, and he blocked them off from walls and sharp corners with his elbows. They were like a machine, working together seamlessly as if they had never been separated.

When they reached the bedroom, she backed up towards the bed, standing a few inches from it as he broke their extended kiss to pull her shirt away. She shifted to help him, rolling her shoulders and moving her arms to make the action easier. Almost immediately, she claimed his wifebeater and threw it across the room with careless disregard as he pulled her close for another kiss.

After what felt like an eternity, she couldn't stand it anymore. She edged them to the bed, sitting down and dragging him with her. The moral center of her brain was quite unhappy with all of this, but the rest of her didn't care. Nothing else in the last twelve years of her life had felt so right.

They laid on the bed, two bodies pressed together and desperate to get closer until they joined to create one.
