Who: Gina, Tegan, and Nick
What: Discussing the fact Nick told a hospital he was marrying Tegan. Then woobie happens.
Where: Orange County Hospital, Tegan's room.
When: After the Fail!Moon
Warnings: Nick being earnest, Gina being precious, and Tegan being adorable.

Nick brought flowers to the hospital today, which was actually new for him to do. He was always tempted to bring them, but he actually took time to put together a bouquet that would be perfect. The colors were perfect for summer, he thought, so he hoped Tegan would enjoy them to liven up her room. Tucked in his other arm was a smaller bouquet for Gina, who he hoped was still on shift when he arrived. It wasn't much, but Nick wanted to say he was sorry for pulling her in to this mess and for lying to her. He wasn't a person who lied on purpose or to make things worse, but just to make things better for Tegan.

He was, after all, her Peter Pan.

Nick made his way up to the intensive care floor after a stop at the front desk. Smiling politely, he stopped at the nurse's station to see one of the nicer nurses he had come to know after all his time spent here. "Good afternoon, Helen," he said and she turned to him to return his smile.

"Well hello there, Nick," she returned, "I see you brought your girl flowers today. How lovely!" Nick ducked his head bashfully with a shrug, "It's not much. Anyway, if Gina comes by. These are for her and could you please tell her I'm in Tegan Benton's room?"

Nick left the smaller bouquet with Helen before he turned to head down the hall. He stopped in front of Tegan's door, knocking before he entered. "Afternoon, Tea," he said with a smile, "I brought you these today. Thought it'd help cheer up the room."

Placing them on the table close to Tegan's bed, Nick sat down in his usual chair and reached for her hand asking his usual question, "How're you feeling?"

Tegan had been curled up in bed, eyes closed and trying her hardest to find the memories that were still hazy in her mind. The doctors had told her that she might never fully remember, but she wasn't quite willing to accept that. They'd also told her a worryingly long list of side effects from her injuries, but she wasn't willing to accept that either.

She opened her eyes and smiled at Nick when he knocked, grinning a little more at the flowers in his hand. Her cheeks went a little pink, and she ducked her head a bit as she sat up more in bed. Her hand felt small in his, as usual, but safe.

She shrugged a little at his question. One of the things that she was still having problems with was speaking. The doctors said they were surprised she could still talk at all, but she wasn't comfortable yet with the way she sounded. She couldn't get much volume yet, and what she could push through sounded rough and just not her. She'd been relying more on hand gestures and writing things down. She ended up simply making a so-so gesture as she gave him an awkward little smile.

Like usual, Gina had been on her feet most of the day. As she had gotten a real orientation around the hospital, she was now expected to get things as she knew where they were. All morning, she was busy in the hospital, helping with patients and working with the other members of the nursing staff. It wasn't until the afternoon that she saw a strange, welcome little break.

Helen, one of the other nurses, flagged her down as she was between patients. The other woman showed her the bouquet left for her, and Gina was truly touched. She left the flowers at the nurse's station to be collected later, but decided to take a detour to Tegan's room in the off chance of catching Nick.

Knocking gently on the door, she peered inside. "Hello?" she asked, smiling.

Nick brought her hand up to kiss the back of it, smiling a little shyly. He wasn't sure where they still stood, since her memories of him were a little more vague. Not that he pushed for her to change them, but Nick was set to let her remember on her own. There was no need to rush, they had all the time in the world ahead of them.

"Yeah I know how that feels," he said with a nod, "It was quiet at work too. Tommy came down to the shop with Tyler for a while. Tommy played checkers against one of the regulars and won. It was kinda funny."

Nick startled a little at the knock, straightening up in his chair before he turned to look to the door. He smiled widely and said, "Hi Gina. You can come in."

Tegan blushed a little more when Nick kissed her hand, and squeezed his fingers a little. Her memories may be hazy, but she knew what she felt in the moment, and how much Nick had been there while she was in the hospital.

She actually laughed a little at the story of Tommy beating someone at checkers. It came out as a quiet little croak, and she winced and cut herself off as quickly as she could.

She looked over at the door too when Gina knocked, and slowly pulled her hand back from Nick's, even as she smiled a little at the nurse. Tegan recognized her as one of the many people that had been in and out of her room since she woke up, but she wasn't that surprised that Nick knew her name. She knew that most of the nurses adored him. She gestured just a bit, beckoning Gina in, that it was okay.

The blush was still fresh on Tegan's cheeks when Gina slid inside, wondering if she had just interrupted something. Of course, from what she had picked up on ever since knowing these two, "interrupting something" probably meant walking in on some hardcore longing. Honestly, Nick just needed to get the balls and ask Tegan out already. Even in her condition, the girl was still capable of being happy, and it was obvious that she felt the same way about Nick. But really, who was Gina to give advice in love?

"Hey, guys," she said with a smile. "I just thought I'd stop by and say hello. And to thank you for the flowers, Nick. That was very sweet." She almost wished she could adopt them both, but then realized that doing so would just make their little "situation" that much more awkward. "How are you feeling today, Tegan?"

Nick wrinkled his nose at Tegan when she cut herself off from laughing. "Don't," he said, sounding a little scolding, "Your laugh is still cute."

He smiled a little when Gina came in. He gave a little shrug and said to her, "You're welcome. It's...kind of an apology for everything that's..you know, the thing." He hadn't explained to Tegan yet what happened and he turned to her and told her, "I kinda...told Gina here. About the whole...I lied to get in here thing."

Tegan gave Nick a little shrug and made a face, still feeling very awkward about the way she sounded. She only ever even practiced talking when he wasn't around.

She smiled, though, at the thought that Nick had brought flowers for one of the nurses. It seemed like exactly the sort of thing he'd do. She gave Gina the same sort of shrug and so-so hand motion she'd given Nick earlier.

Lying didn't seem like the sort of thing Nick would do, though, and she frowned, confused at first as to why he'd needed to, and what he'd said. Her eyebrows came together a bit in concern, glancing between Nick and Gina. Her hand inched out again, searching for Nick's without even thinking about it.

When Nick revealed the reason for bringing her flowers, her expression softened tremendously. He was so adorable. Honestly, she wanted to adopt him. Just take him away and give him a great big hug. "Awww sweetie," she said, smiling. "Thank you." As he brought up the lying situation, she sighed. "It's...okay. I told you, it was okay." She paused. Well, she was sort of lying. It was only okay if Tegan was okay. If not, well. They would all be in trouble.

She looked to Tegan. "I guess now is as good a time as any to at least get it out in the open." She paused, taking a few steps forward. "Nick told us that he was your fiance, so that he would be able to find out how you were doing. Now...because he really isn't, he shouldn't have been able to get any information on your condition." Gina certainly didn't agree with these laws, but she had to abide by them. It was, after all, part of her job. "So...we gave him this information when he really shouldn't have been able to get it. Which mean that...if you were unhappy with this, Tegan, you would be entitled to a lawsuit." Why was she telling her this? Gina wasn't really sure. If Tegan did decide to sue, she would go down as well. But it wasn't right not to tell the girl about this. "So...you don't have to do anything with that now, but...it's your right as a patient to know about it."

Nick made a little face, holding Tegan's hand in his. He was quiet as Gina explained it to Tegan. He really never expected it to be a big deal in the first place, they weren't meant to make a big deal out of it. Yet, suddenly, he was confronted with laws and regulations that he had honestly no idea existed. He would do it again, if he had to, but he hated to see anyone in trouble for what he thought was a good plan.

He lifted his shoulders in a shrug as he told her, "I'm sorry. They wouldn't let me know anything unless...So, I told them that. Tommy and Tyler thought it was a good idea.."

Tegan listened, still a little confused at first, but eventually smiling softly and shaking her head. It was fine. Of course it was fine. It was Nick. He'd taken care of her and her brothers, and this was just part of that. She didn't quite know how to describe everything, but she reached for the pad of paper and pencil that she'd been keeping by her bed, reclaiming her hand from Nick again.

It's fine. It's been really good that he's here. & it's not a big deal - we've done it before

She blinked and looked at the paper, at what she'd written. They'd done it before? She frowned to herself, not looking up at either of them. She chased a hazy memory, an almost familiar voice saying "They're married", and knowing that it had been talking about her and Nick. But why would they have been pretending that?

Reading Tegan's note, Gina nodded. She kept her relief hidden, because it shouldn't have been only about her and the other nurses. But she was inwardly very glad that they wouldn't be facing a rightful lawsuit. Those were very hard to fight. "Okay," she said with a smile. "I'm sorry to bring up such an unpleasant topic, but I thought that it was your right, Tegan, to know about it."

But now was time for happier things. "Of course, I thought you wouldn't mind," she said lightly, glancing between them. "After all, Nick has been more attentive to you than some husbands of patients I've seen." It was an innocent enough comment, but she hoped that it would be a slight kick in Nick's rear. After all, if the boy really cared about this girl, he had to act.

Nick looked relieved that Tegan was okay with it. He read her note too, pressing his lips together in a thin line. Russia and the memories of have been something they had avoided speaking about. He wasn't sure if she even remembered or if it was coming back.

At Gina's statement, Nick's cheeks flared up in a hot pink blush that he felt to the tips of his ears. He wasn't completely oblivious that Gina was nudging him to make Tegan an offer to date, but Nick was and still is the champion of not finding the proper words. "I'm just really good at helping," he mumbled a little, hiding practically behind his hair again.

Tegan was still distracted by her own writing, trying to place the memory that spurred it, and frowning when her mind wouldn't quite cooperate. She nodded absently along with the comments going around her, barely hearing them and not registering Gina's teasing.

She put pencil to paper again, sketching out a quick He's wonderful before returning her attention to trying to track down when and where they might have pretended before to be married. In a rush, dreams came together with a thread of memory, and she wrote slowly on her paper.

Russia?

She nudged Nick to get him to look, confused at why he was so pink.

"You are," Gina replied to Nick with a knowing smile. "You're very good, I wasn't kidding. Like I told you, you really helped in Tegan's recovery." She glanced to the girl. "You're very fortunate to have somebody like Nick in your life." She caught the note about how he was wonderful, feeling her insides turn to goo at the sight of it. How sweet were they? Honestly, she wanted to just smoosh them into one another.

However, the mention of Russia made her pause. She had a vague understanding of what Nick had said happened "in Russia," during the "time traveling" event everybody in the building seemed to have experienced. Frowning slightly, she looked to Nick, unsure of how to respond.

Nick looked at the paper and felt his insides go cold. No one really prepared him to have something to say for when/if she was starting to remember things. "Russia?" he echoed the word on the notepad. He hesitated for a moment, looking between Gina and Tegan.

After nothing happened on the full moon, he was a little worried to say anything around Gina. She didn't believe them, it was hard not to see why. He wished he could actually use his abilities when he wasn't Peter, actually show her he could fly and have her believe. He cleared his throat a little before softly, "You remember anything?"

Tegan glanced over at Gina, not knowing that she lived in the building, and swallowed awkwardly. She hesitated for a moment, then whispering so soft that it was only the slightest bit of air through her lips. "Have we been there?" She reached out for his hand again, holding to it tightly.

When nothing had happened on the Full Moon, Lucas had had a field day mocking the residents of Bellum Letale. Gina, on the other hand, was concerned. Obviously, something had happened to them. And mocking them wouldn't help. But she wasn't sure what would. Therapy? What would that do if the underlying cause was still a mystery. Honestly, Gina was at a loss for words when it came to the "strange things" that happened in Bellum Letale.

So instead of interjecting, she stayed silent. She faded into the background it seemed, just standing quietly while Tegan and Nick spoke.

Tegan nodded too, bits of dreams coming back before actual memories, the echo of the two of them talking about Russia. She raised her hand to her throat, still ringed in angry bruises and rope burn, though healing faster than it had any right to. She tugged on Nick's hand, ignoring Gina for a moment, wanting Nick closer, for him to ground her there. "Someone said we were married..." She still whispered, barely any sound at all, not wanting to hear the damaged croak that would come with a louder voice.

Nick scooted closer, dragging the chair next to the bed. He looked down at their hands, focusing on Tegan's fingers for a moment. It was a little detached, explaining at least the marriage scenario. "Her name is Joanie. She was with us in Russia. She said she met you before Georgy's house though. And Ella was there too. You didn't want to sleep alone. So," he gave an impassive shrug, "Joanie told the servants we were married. And we got to stay together. I kept watch all night."

Tegan nodded a little, moving as close to the edge of the bed as she was able, a few tubes and monitors still keeping her relatively immobile. But the scenario - that sounded familiar. Almost like a story she used to know, but had forgotten. She clung more to his hand, heart rate raising slightly as she thought about things.

"Anyway, we don't...need to talk about that," he said awkwardly. "It's not a fun story." He didn't mean to completely shut down her grasping at memories, but he wasn't prepared to see her reactions to figuring out what had been done.

For a moment, he hesitated before he blurted out, "Anyway, the doctors said you're healing really fast. You could come home soon. Isn't that great? I told Tommy earlier and he was just, like..flying."

Tegan blinked at the quick change of topic, but then glanced guiltily over at Gina, realizing that they shouldn't be talking about Bellum things in front of a non-resident. She tried to put the returning memories to the side, focusing instead on Nick.

She smiled a little at his outburst, glancing over at Gina, as if for confirmation.

As they talked about Russia, Gina stayed quiet. She knew what Nick had told her, and she knew that Lucas had been in France for a week seemingly against the rules of reality. But she wasn't sure what she believed at this point. After all, it was a crazy notion. So she stayed quiet, letting them talk until Nick mentioned Tegan going home soon.

The smile returned quickly to her face at the thought of little Tommy's reaction to the news. She had met the boys once before, and had been absolutely charmed by them both. At Tegan's curious glance, she nodded. "Yeah, I looked over your chart this morning. It'll be another two days at least, just to make sure that everything's alright. It's standard procedure. We want to make doubly sure that when you go home, it's for good."

Nick practically beamed at that, looking over at Tegan. "See? Only a few more days. Then you can come home and I'll be over a lot to help out, so it'll be good."

He reached up to brush her hair back and smiled again, "The boys and I had been cleaning and trying to make everything like...presentable and in reach. Cause of the whole not sure how much walking you're gonna do.."

Tegan smiled in return, laughing under her breath in a soft huff. She nodded and leaned into his hand, closing her eyes for a soft moment and feeling hopeful. Going home sounded good, even if something about the thought made her uneasy.

She teased instead, barely a whisper. "You'll have to carry me."

The little touches they exchanged warmed Gina's heart. For a moment, she was reminded of her college days, and she had to stifle the memories. They said that time healed all wounds, but thinking of Edward still made her heart bleed. Ignoring the surge of emotion she felt, she simply smiled at the two.

"Well we'll provide you with a wheelchair, but it's my professional opinion that a human carrier is much better for the healing process."

Nick grinned a little bashfully, "I'm pretty good for carrying people around. I'm like a workhorse. Big and all." He laughed a little at his own joke.

"See, won't be all bad," Nick told her, "Plus your brothers will probably wait hand and foot on you unless Sam gives Tommy another candybar again.."

Tegan laughed a little more, louder this time, and winced at the sound, but didn't stifle it. She reached over to squeeze Nick's bicep, as if testing it for strength. "Suppose you'll do," she whispered.

She looked a little horrified at the thought of Tommy eating too much candy though. "Oh no..."

This was too precious. Gina smiled warmly at the two. "And if you two ever need a hand, you know to call me," she said. "I'm always happy to make a few extra servings of whatever I make for dinner." Gina was no pro chef, but she made a decent meal. Adding a few extra servings was easy for her, as she was used to doing it.

Nick looked at Gina with so much appreciation for the older woman. "Thank you, Gina," he said seriously, "That'd be really nice."

Honestly, it would be as long as Lucas wasn't there. Even Nick couldn't stand the guy and it made him uncomfortable. Nick almost laughed at the look on Tegan's face, "Don't worry. I usually hide the candy bars. I dunno if he's found my hiding spots though. Tommy's tricky for a six year old. Smarter than me too."

Tegan nodded along with Nick's thanks. She still wasn't quite up to eating normally, the food hurting her throat, but it was good to know that the boys would be fed.

She made a face at the talk of candybars, though, shaking her head as she laughed again, quieter. She leaned over to give Nick a kiss on the cheek, seeming normal and natural in the moment, even though she froze and bit her lip awkwardly after she'd done it, blushing.

"It's my pleasure," she said. "Just let me know whenever you'd like to take me up on the offer." Though Gina hadn't been terribly involved in caring for Tegan's brothers due to her commitment to work, she had the feeling that their care under Nick and some of the younger residents had lead to a lot of take-out due to its simplicity. But it was important for growing boys to have proper, home-cooked meals. And she would be happy to provide them.

The kiss Tegan pressed to Nick's cheek made her beam, reaching up to cover her lips with two fingers to try and hide it. Yes, it was time for the grownup to skedaddle so the kids could play. "Okay, well I just wanted to stop by and say hello. It's good to see you looking so well, Tegan. And thanks again for the flowers, Nick. Do you two need anything in here right now?"

"Of course, thank you again," Nick replied. He was about to say something else when she leaned up to kiss his cheek. He stammered, halted, and his face went bright pink and practically glowed.

"You're welcome, Gina," he managed out. Did his voice crack? His voice hadn't cracked since he was a teenager, but he felt like he just managed to squeak. "I don't need anything." Except maybe for his face to stop feeling so hot.

Tegan was blushing almost as much as Nick, looking away even though she had a hold of one of his hands and wasn't letting go. Part of her wanted to run out of the room in embarrassment, but another, quieter and shyer part, wanted to lean in and kiss him again.

She glanced up just enough to give Gina an awkward smile and shake her head a bit. She didn't need anything either, other than to feel less embarrassed at the moment.

The awkwardness in the room was thicker than maple syrup. But they would learn, eventually. Smiling, Gina nodded. "Okay, then. You know my number if you need anything, Nick. Give it to Tegan." She'd entrust him to do that as opposed to taking on the task herself. Though she imagined that they'd both get distracted before remembering to trade the number. Oh well. "I'll see you two later, then." With a little wave, she left the room and swept down the hall. Oh, young love! It was such a wonderful thing.
