Who: Joanie and Sam.
What: Talk of tattoos and drinking, more emphasis on the drinking.
Where: Starting at the ink place then off to some bar.
When: Erm. Monday night?
Warnings: Rated PG-13 for language and mild thematic elements.

Sam wasn't exactly sure why he randomly decided to get a tattoo - maybe it was because he was starting over in a new place, a new building, and it was a way to mark a fresh start. But good lord, was he turning into his father with the way he just went through life at random, making decisions on the fly and who knows, maybe tomorrow he would end up having bought a brokedown tractor?

But no, that wasn't it. He could exercise his usual practicality in this decision despite having Issues much like most of the inhabitants of Bellum; he was his own person and he was going to live his own life. It had actually been fun, discussing placement options with Joanie, who seemed very dedicated to 'her craft.' Between the shoulder blades seemed like the best idea - it was covered easily by any shirt he wore, calf tattoos made you look like a tool (Sam was convinced of this), he was not eager to put anything on his feet, and the shoulder was too cliche. As far as what it would be, names were out and so were Chinese symbols because they were so overdone. For some reason, he really liked the Hindi word designs - but what to say, was the question? That could be decided later. He could always come up with something and then ask Joanie to draw it, which suited him just fine. It was officially Booze O'Clock, so drinks were the name of the game right now, and he would wait patiently while she did what she needed to do to close up.

"Another compliment, a backhanded one? I think that's the best one you've given me," he laughed. "Of course it's a challenge. Wouldn't be much fun if you just fell all over yourself, as devastatingly handsome as I am." Sure, he knew he was a hot piece of ass who didn't know that??? but he liked a challenge, and was patient enough to not demand instant gratification when it came to most things.

"It's either a compliment or a death sentence. Take your pick." She scoffed, swaying just enough to ram him slightly as they turned a corner. At his comment concerning challenges and his own looks, she rolled her eyes. Oh, great. Joanie wouldn't deny that he was extremely attractive, but she knew better than to let that override your common sense. Appearances were not the entire person, and she knew for a fact that asshat behavior has no face - only tar-like substance that can be lurking under any mask.

"Oh gee, I'm so glad to know that the fact that I have a brain is a point in my favor," she said sarcastically with a laugh.

"I'll take it as a compliment because pursuing you is probably like a death sentence anyway, ri - hey!" Sam was not expecting to get rammed; what a pleasant surprise. But he grinned in a cheeky sort of manner, putting his arm back around her and adding a gentle noogie for good measure - but then he let go a second later. "A working brain is definitely a point in your favor," he said. "Not to mention you're just oh-so-charming."

Oh, he deserved that. Call her a death sentence, would he? When she was smirking over her victory, Joanie was completely caught off guard by a light noogie. She squealed, swatting him on the shoulder just as he let go. Face red, she stumbled a few steps away from him, half-laughing and half-fuming. "You!" she started, pointing at him. "Will pay for that later." Smoothing a hand over her hair, she crossed her arms and continued walking apart from him, glancing towards him as he spoke up again.

"You got that right," she said sardonically. "I'm just a peach." Her aunt had always disliked her for that reason. Southern belles were supposed to be charming, after all, and Joanie was about as charming as a cat that just fell in the sink. Oh, well. Her loss. "Granted, as we've already decided that charming is overrated, that shouldn't be a point against me."

Sam held up his hands in mock surrender. "Did you just put a hex on me??" he asked in disbelief, laughing too. "And no, it's true, charming is overrated - but I still think you're your own type of charming. So more points for you. Being beautiful helps too. You're just racking 'em up, aren't you?"

The mention of hexes made her pause. Could she cast hexes? Man, she wished she could. It'd be a lot more fun than turning spoons into forks, and would be a great way to channel out her general aggression towards the rest of the universe. Granted, she'd end up in a boatload of trouble in two days, but it'd be so worth it.

"If I hex you, you'll know it," she said with mock cheer. As he began to slather on the compliments, she felt her cheeks turn red. She ducked her head to cause a curtain of hair to fall over her face, shielding it slightly from his view as she glanced away. Self-esteem had never been one of Joanie's strong points, especially concerning her appearance. Going through middle school with Faith as her best friend had been particularly soul-crushing; the girl had always been gorgeous, leaving Joanie to be the ugly duckling in the corner.

At least she knew that Sam was full of shit now.

"Clearly, I am," she said evasively, finally tucking her hair behind her ear to reveal that the blush was dimming. "What can I say? I'm a winner. We need a scoreboard or something."

He made Joanie the emo rockstar blush! Sam felt oddly triumphant about that, but he didn't say anything else because people with self-esteem issues couldn't handle a barrage of compliments. He was telling the truth though! Bluntness was part of his own charm. "Oh yeah? How many hexes have you cast?" he asked, sticking his hands in his pockets. "Are you certified?"

At his questions, she laughed. "That's for me to know and you to agonize over," she said with a grin. "Do you give away all your tricks upfront? Didn't think so." The thought of hexing certification made her pause slightly. She recalled Luther cautioning her against using her magic illegally, which reminded her that she didn't even know how legal it was or was not. Damn. She dismissed the thought, confidant that if she were breaking the law, he'd have stuck her behind bars by now. "And certification is for back-of-the-cereal box wizards. The real deal needs no license, only badassery."

"So what do you do, as the real deal?" For some reason, he was picturing Joanie sitting in a completely dark room, hunched over and making voodoo dolls. That probably wasn't it, however. "I'm just curious. I've never tried to put a hex on anyone, so really, I don't have any tricks!"

Now that question made her stomach clench. It was bad enough that Dracula knew what she could do, and two other random people besides. But she couldn't let it leak even more than it already had. So she played it off. "You don't need to hex to have tricks," she said, feeling a wave of relief as they approached Bellum Letale. Though her tone was casual, there was a wooden uncertainty in her face as she spoke. "And you know, witch things. Cackle. Wear black. Scare small children."

"Not much of a real deal then," he replied, clearly picking up on the falseness and general bullshit in her statement. "So you may just be all bark and no bite. But that's okay. I'm sure I'll unravel the mysteries eventually. That includes hex-related and non hex-related things." He held the lobby door open for her, not because he thought she was a weak woman who was not independent and couldn't take care of herself or whatever feminist ideology was pumped through the air vents, but because it was just good manners to not shut a door in someone's face, be they male or female.

As he speculated on how real - or not real - she was, she instantly felt a coil of rage in her. He wanted real? She could show him real. She could turn a damn newspaper into a steel jail cell, that was more real than anybody could take. Just as she opened her mouth to hiss back, she realized that doing so would go against everything she was trying to do. So she swallowed her pride and walked through the open door - giving him a slight nod as she passed, as she was far too frustrated for thanks - without losing her cool. "If a mystery is unraveled, it's no longer fun. So it's probably in your best interest to just sit outside and be entertained." She didn't even look at the elevator, making a beeline for the stairs. That elevator was evil and she would not have its presence in her life.

Uh oh, the witch was getting irritated! It didn't bother Sam any, however. He had just called her bluff, that's all! Grinning innocently, he cut her off at the foot of the stairs, blocking her way. "I think I'm capable of deciding what's in my best interest," he said, leaning in close. But then he backed off at the last second, and stepped aside so she could go up the stairs. "Game's still on, by the way."

When he blocked her way, she took a deep breath and let it out quickly in an angry huff. She opened her mouth to retort, prepared to explain that when his best interest involved peeking into her personal life she was allowed to step in, when he cut her off by severely poking at her personal bubble. Her face flushed as she leaned back, eyes wide. "Nnnngh!" she grunted, the sound one of both confusion and frustration, and darted up three stairs.

When he mentioned the game, she paused and turned to him with a raised brow. "I know," she said matter-of-factly. "When a game is afoot, it can never be un-afooted until it reaches its conclusion."
