Who: Sam and Archer
What: Being nerds
Where: The lobby, then some coffee shop
When: Sunday at 12
Warnings: Epic nerdiness and dorkery

He was apprehensive to use the word "excited," but Archer was actually feeling something close to it as he buttoned up his shirt in front of the mirror. He hadn't expected to meet another scientist in this horrid building, and as an added stroke of luck, he was interested in molecular biology. It was similar to his line of work, so very similar, that it filled him with something he assumed was joy. After all, it wasn't every day that he met somebody that he could talk to about such matters. Most people were afraid of science. It took special people, certain people, to embrace it.

Though Archer always did his best not to expect too much from people - after all, most of them were ridiculous - he had to admit that he had high hopes for this Samuel. He seemed to be fairly intelligent - party ambitions aside - and his interests were, well, interesting. At the very least, they could speak without Archer becoming painfully bored by his dribble.

He adjusted the collar of his shirt, looking down at himself self-consciously. He hadn't meant to essentially tell this stranger that he often went underfed, and yet he had done just that. So he had tried to choose clothing that didn't exaggerate his bony physique. A button-down shirt created the illusion of mass, and his jeans were just baggy enough to look normal. Running a hand through his hair, he adjusted his glasses before leaving his apartment.

After locking his door, Archer slid the keys into his pocket and walked down the hallway, down the stairs and into the lobby. He glanced around, wondering if Samuel would indeed appear. He glanced at his watch, seeing that it was indeed twelve o'clock, and stuffed his hands in his pockets to take his mind off it. He would be there soon, of course.

"Will you show me?" Sam turned to face Archer, folding his arms across his chest. He raised an eyebrow and waited. "Or would you rather just demonstrate tomorrow in the lab? Although to see it now would be the perfect end to such a fun adventure. Up to you." Of course, Sam had no idea what he could do - he never even gave that a thought - so naturally this seemed like a great idea to him.

This was ridiculous. Once again, he was fighting off the feeling that he was a circus pony for somebody else's amusement. However, he recalled that he had said he would demonstrate. And he wasn't sure about how populated the laboratory was, so he would prefer doing this on his own terms. "I'm alright with a demonstration now. Let's go to my apartment, though." He gestured to the building and lead him inside. "So that I can ensure that nobody else will see." He wasn't sure if anybody looked out their windows often, but he'd rather not catch a fluke.

They walked up the stairs to the first floor and Jasper quickly let them inside. Locking the door behind them out of paranoia, the paused, running his hands through his hair. "Alright," he said, throwing a furtive glance to the window. "You may sit, if you'd like." He gestured to an uncomfortable plastic chair in the corner, sitting apart from the benches stocked with laboratory equipment that consumed his living room."

"Nice place you got here," Sam quipped, flopping down on the chair and wiggling around in it. "You don't entertain much, do you?" he observed, trying to get comfortable. No such luck. Oh well! "Go for it, Jay. Blow me away." Mostly, Sam was curious because if this really happened then, well, he was fucked. It would just be cementing all of the crazy stories and warnings into truths, and he needed to know.

"Thank you," Archer replied. He didn't seem to detect Samuel's sarcasm. In fact, Archer barely knew what sarcasm was. As the other man flopped around in the chair, he sighed. "And no, I don't."

Closing his eyes briefly, he took a few steps back and ran his hands through his hair. He still wasn't even sure how he did it. It was like stepping backwards through a door and realizing that there was nothing on the other side to stand on. It was an endless fall, a nonexistence, that he couldn't put into words. The more he concentrated on this, the more he thought, the paler he became.

His eyes opened, and as he looked down, he witnessed the last visible remnants of his skin disappearing. Reaching up, he ran a hand over his face, touching an invisible finger to his glasses. His clothing was still visible, as were his spectacles, and it appeared as if a ghost were animating them all. He took a few steps forward, extending an invisible hand to Samuel. "Are you blown away, or should I repeat this demonstration?"

Sam never really had been into drugs - sure, there was the occasional joint in college - but tripping on acid was not his cup of tea. However, he was pretty sure he didn't even need to do that when there were guys turning invisible in front of his fucking eyes and what the fucking shit on a...!

He was internally freaking out, to put it mildly. It took a lot to surprise him, but this certainly did it. "You..." Once Sam picked his jaw back up off of the ground, he was only focused on one thing - the invisible man. He reached out to poke Jasper's hand. When he did, he saw the hand re-appear, which was strange - like the invisibility didn't work there anymore.

"Wait, wait, wait, wait a fucking minute," Sam mumbled frantically, grasping Jasper's shoulder - it too appeared in his line of vision once more. Was that him doing that? Or was it something else? "This is the weirdest - okay!" He stepped back, going back behind the chair. "Good demonstration, thanks."

When Samuel touched his hand, Archer expected him to just stare at it when he realized it wasn't there. However, the last thing he expected to see happened: his hand re-appeared. Eyes wide, he yanked his hand back, feeling a rush of panic in his chest. What was happening? He wasn't doing that. He wanted to pull back when Sam reached out again, but feeling his hand on his shoulder, he could see a flash of pale skin along his neck and upper chest beneath his shirt.

Finally he recoiled, the invisible man clothed in floating rags stumbling backwards to evade this nonsense. His heavy breathing was audible, his shirt expanding and contracting with his chest. He wanted to demand that Samuel explain this, but he knew he couldn't. Running his hands through his hair, he turned his back on the other man as he muttered nonsense, hiding behind the chair.

Expression set in stone, he slowly reappeared, turning to face Samuel when he was fully visible. "Yes. It was." His voice was a bit thin, unsure. "Well. I apologize if that. Startled you." His face was flushed, a sign of adrenaline and nerves and a thousand insecurities he didn't want to admit. What did this mean? Was his gift fading? Was Griffin abandoning him? "I didn't mean to."

Sam most certainly could not explain this, as much as he wanted to. He was sure that the cogs in his brain had ceased their turning, but slowly, he shook his head to try to get ahold of himself. The mental image of previously invisible limbs reappearing, flashing back so quickly, continued to play over and over in his head.

"No, you didn't startle me," Sam assured Jasper - who was looking a little pink. Well, that made two of them. "I asked you to show me, so I was expecting it. Are you...okay?" Whatever happened had obviously perplexed both of them.

Taking a few deep breaths, Archer dragged a hand over his face and sighed. "Yes, I'm fine," he said simply, voice a bit stronger than he'd have liked. "Apparently things here are...always changing." He wasn't sure if he wanted to bring up the fact that his ability to turn invisible seemed to be fading for some unknown reason, so he didn't. "That's, I suppose, to be expected here."

"I guess that makes sense. Where would we be without evolution? Still grunting and not knowing what fire is. So, things change. It's natural." Sam stuffed his hands in his pockets; at least now he seemed to have regained control of his blood pressure. "Alright, I better get going," he said in a whoosh. "So tomorrow? See you at one."

As Samuel began to see himself out, Archer followed him. He opened the door for him, an extension of courtesy. "Yes, it's true. Evolution dictates that we must adapt." He paused, offering him a faint smile. "Yes. I will see you then. Remember to send me the address."
