Who: Everyone!
What: Transformation Plot Post
Where: All over.
When: Moonrise on the 28th.
Warnings: All kinds, I expect.

The moon slipped up past the horizon full, round, and white. Its effects had been predicted, though perhaps not fully believed by the residents of the building.

Moonlight streamed through the windows of the building, washing the city in pale light. For the tenants of Bellum Letale, where ever they were, scattered in the night, it had a tangible effect.

Change rippled through the building, much as it had over a month before. But this was not simply a twitch in the fabric of things, gone in the blink of an eye. It was a rolling change, gradual as the moonrise, tangible, and, in some cases, likely terrifying in its inexorability. People became what they were, what they ought to have been, and what they weren't.

The moon was up, and trouble was about to run high in Bellum.

[Notes: Remember that the events of last month still apply-I.E, those who became vampires will be vampires when they take on their fable form, the Frog Prince will still be human after being turned back last plot, etc. Whether the fables are aware a month has passed since they were last around is up to the players. This log posted with the anon account so that the mods do not wake up tomorrow with 100 notifications in their gmail. Go forth and plot!]

Daniel was aware that they had failed, and he was worried about his friends and what they might do, but the Beast felt that Daniel was a weak, useless creature, and what little there was of Daniel in him was so astonished by this negligent thought that he went entirely silent. The Beast, accustomed to ruling his own castle, took this as only natural, and turned around on soft velvet pads, moving silently after Beauty with such silence that not even the floor creaked under his weight. His presence and breath were warm on her ankles as soon as she squeezed past him. He didn't trouble putting his back to the door--he knew that if the witch wished to get in, she would get in.

He had no curiosity as to what Beauty was doing; as far as he concerned she could do what she wished in his castle, as long as she stayed in it.

She busied herself in the kitchen for a few minutes, finishing the salves and filling the tiny pots of creams and oils, and she did it unthinkingly. As she worked, she allowed everything from the past month to filter into her mind, and she frowned occasionally, the vines flaring up around him without warning and then melting back away into nothing. Once she finished, she took one tiny pot of rose-scented oil, and she ducked past him with it, stopping only to scratch one large, soft ear, on the way to the bathroom with it.

Once there, she applied a little oil to each remaining scar from the stitches, and she watched them fade slowly in the mirror (she was better at this than Ella was). She had closed the door between herself and the Beast, but she hummed softly while she was inside, to keep him from worry.

Finally, she stepped out, smelling of roses and looking a little shy at finally being alone with him again, a touch unsure of herself (which she didn't even attempt to hide). "They haven't had a very good month, have they?" she asked him softly.

While she worked, he sat on his haunches and watched her move about the kitchen in a bustling fashion he found both appealing and utterly alien. He had no comment for the process, nor any particular objection except for the occasional appearance of the vines, which made him stand up with his fur on end and stare around for the threat. When it never manifested, he remained nervous until she finished her still room work.

He padded after her until she literally closed the door on his nose, after which he grunted unhappily and sat down with his chin on his paws to watch the door until she came out.

His ears perked when she appeared again. "Who? ...Oh. Yes. She was hurt." He lifted his nose to her hand.

She hesitated a moment, then she reached out and rubbed the soft slope of his nose as she stood there. Just a second of a touch; there and then gone, and then there again. It was the sort of reaction a person has when they haven't seen someone in a very long while; the butterflies and the shyness that accompanies that sort of a reunion.

"I am not certain he is doing any better than she is," she said openly, the worry unhidden in her voice. "What if he cannot handle it?" she asked, slipping past him to sit on the end of the bed, where she could watch the hall and see if anyone attempted to intrude on them.

The Beast purred happily with the attention, curled around her once like a cat, and then trotted over to the bed with her. He snuffled at it and then hopped up onto the mattress. It gave a tremendous squeaking groan under his weight, but he didn't seem troubled--it was a sturdy oak construct. He flopped out on the center of it in a heap of Daniel's sheets, clearly pleased with himself for finding a good place to stretch out. "The man is weak, but he is much better than he was before," he said, groaning with pleasure as he stretched out, claws reaching. "He is not in danger of destroying himself except by drink. Do not worry so."

She slipped out of her shoes and propped her bare feet on the edge of the mattress, her knees tucked under her chin. She watched him stretch out, and she smiled at the sound of pleasure he made. She wasn't close enough that she was touching him, but she did reach out one hand to touch the very tip of one soft, velvet ear. It was a curious touch; a thing of learning and seeing what she could get away with without being roared at. It hadn't escaped her notice that he thought he could tell her what to do at all times, but unlike Ella, it didn't make her bristle. If something was very important, she would say something. Otherwise, she would let him growl and think he controlled everything he surveyed.

"She is very frightened, though she is trying not to let him see it," she said, then she frowned carefully, a memory filtering into her thoughts. "Her sister is trying to get her to leave with her after this moon, and she's inclined to do it, since the sister has promised Daniel will be free if she agrees," she explained, her frown deepening. "If she leaves..." she let her voice trail, not voicing the selfish thought that entered her mind.

The ear twitched at her touch, but he was pleased that she was not too scared any more. It made him almost intolerably smug, and yes, he was perfectly certain that it was the way it should be. The Beast was, however, a very selfish creature, and he cared very little for Ella or for Daniel as long as he got what he wanted. It was the same with the dead things. The Beast had what he wanted as long as Beauty was there.

"I am sorry she is afraid," he said, almost politely, rolling over a little on his back just in case she was in the mood for scritching under his chin. "But she can't leave here, it's safe here." He seemed so certain she would not leave him, almost naively trusting.

She couldn't hide the smile when he so blatantly demanded chin scratching without saying nary a word, and she obliged him. "You will get spoiled," she told him, though there was only growing fondness in the words. "I do not think I'm supposed to stay here so willingly," she admitted, feeling a touch of guilt at the memory of her father. Perhaps he would let her visit him. But, honestly, she knew her time was limited here, and any time away was time wasted, which she also (somehow) knew was not right. "I think we're supposed to have more time," she said thoughtfully, turning her attention back to Ella and the sister. "If she goes with her, do you think I will also go?" she asked, and the fear was very obvious in her voice then, her fingers stilling beneath his chin.

That adequately distracted him from even the chin scritching. He rolled up abruptly, and the quick shift of his weight made the bed frame crack. "She can't go! You can't go!" The man was having the same reaction. The whine turned into a roar. "You can't! I forbid it!"

She jumped to her feet when the bed frame cracked, and she backed toward the wall, not stopping until her shoulders were stopped by the presence of a bookshelf at her back. "I can't control her," she said, vines starting to swirl a little at her feet. She'd just gotten comfortable enough around him to touch him without fear, but she wasn't accustomed to the yelling, and it frightened her. "The sister told her that the man, Daniel, would be free. She'd do anything for him to be free." Her voice went softer. "She loves him."

He hopped down off the bed, shedding the illusion of the big cat and becoming a restless, stalking predator again. He paced one way to the end of the room, about three lumbering steps, and then whirled around awkwardly to pace the other way. He did this now and snapped his teeth in frustration. "He will die! He is stupid and weak, and he will poison himself, and then he will die!" The ends of the exclamations came out in long angry roars of the bearish kind. "You must make the stupid girl stay!"

She moved so she was clear of the bookshelf, and she pressed her back to the wall, the vines unthinking, reactionary things now. "She isn't stupid," she said a little defensively. "If you love something, you want to protect them," she said with a little bit of Ella's stubbornness. "She's trying to set him free," she said. "If I could control her, I would have told her to tell him, but I can't. The sister has told her the man doesn't love her, that he told her as much, that he admitted to loving another. They've been intimate, and it hurt her," she said, then, in a lower voice. "I do not want to go." She paused then, as if considering something. "If the Witch left, would you be free?" A pause. "And do you remember her? The one before me?"

The Beast was so angry that he was beyond words. The girl would not go. His Beauty would not go. The stupid man would not go. Everyone would stay, because that was the way it was supposed to be. The vines made him angry, and he stretched out claws to tear at them when they reached for him. He pinned one down under a paw and growled at it when it tore at him with a thorn. His attention seemed to be on those rather than her, and after clawing at another one he retreated, padding small drops of blood and growling incoherently to himself. About the witch, he would not respond, nor to any of the other questions.

It took her a good five minutes to fight past the fear that had her pinned to the wall, to push it down enough for the vines to subside completely. Then, very slowly, she took one step toward him, then another, then another. She did it all with the air of an small animal that would be startled at the smallest movement, and she smelled of fear, even over the roses and greenery. She did not stop until she'd reached him, and then she dropped to her knees is front of him in a swirl of graceful skirts, the vines dissolving for her. "Please," she said softly, reaching out a a trembling hand. "You're hurt."

He didn't give her the paw, but at least his ears weren't flat and his fur wasn't bristling anymore. He hung his head close to her side as she came near then dropped his chin over her shoulder, enveloping her in warm fur and thick musk. "Please don't go away," he said, softly, in a voice far different from the enraged roar. "I'll die if you leave. Stay with me."

She closed her eyes when he dropped his chin on her shoulder, her fingers sliding into the fur at his neck greedily. All of her fear from just a moment earlier melted away with his words, and she buried her nose against the warm fur at his neck. "I won't," she promised vehemently, even before he'd finished the words. "I won't go." She was very quiet for a few seconds, not knowing how to keep the promise, but determined to.

"I knew the full moon was coming, and I knew I would see you," she admitted, vulnerability unmasked in her voice. "I wanted to see you."

He pulled back a little, snuffled in her hair with a hot breath, and then gave her a long, sad look. "I am afraid you will not be here when I wake up. The man is afraid you will go if he does not watch every moment." It was unclear whether or not he was speaking of Beauty or Ella. He sat down heavily next to her, sending dust motes up in the air. "If you go away I cannot follow. You have to stay." He nudged her jaw with his forehead. "Promise."

"She isn't certain he likes her very much," she said, exposing vulnerabilities that Ella would not want shared. "He did not like her very much before, and now he needs her, which is not the same as love. Love is unselfish," she said softly. She curled against the softness of his side, the fur warm and musky-safe, even in the ravaged apartment. "The sister said he loved the other woman. She used it to convince her to go, that and the promise of freedom for the man," she added, rubbing her fingers over his forehead. "We must do something about the man who threatened her," she said thoughtfully after a moment.

"Is he drinking, the man?"

He curled his head around to make a very large, breathing C and flopped over his front paws. "I can't tell you what the man feels. He doesn't know. The woman before hurt him and he does not know if it fixed." The Beast sounded utterly dismissive of this problem. Daniel's difficulties were petty to him, almost child-like in their simplicity. It could be argued, too, that The Beast understood very little of love. He was, after all, a Beast. There was much of possession in what he felt for his Beauty.

He closed his eyes. "Sometimes he does, when she has nightmares. But he will run out soon, don't worry." No more alcohol, problem solved. "If she stays here, then we will not need to worry about the man who hurt her." No more wandering, no more attacks, problem solved.

"He can easily get more," she told him reluctantly, wishing she could see things as easily as he did (and in her mind, Ella was screaming). She saw complications in ways he did not. If the man drank and he died, then the Beast would not be here during the next moon. If the woman left to the country across the sea, then they would be parted (she did not understand that the Beast would literally die). "You do not worry about things as they do," she told him. "He, the man, is fragile. And she is trying to be strong, but it's all pretend, her strength."

"They do not talk, because they are both afraid," she told him, settling more against him, the regular pattern of his breathing comforting. "And because he is becoming more like you."

"He is weak," he said, correcting her phrasing. "It would be very good for him to grow a spine." The Beast was of the opinion that it wouldn't harm Daniel to be more like him. Princes were expected to be a lot tougher than that, and to the Beast, four years was not a very long time. Then, lazily, "I have known many men who drank in excess. It is very stupid of them, but no great difficulty unless he does very foolish things when he is in his cups. He just sleeps and scribbles. It is no great matter. You worry too much."

She was torn between painting him a realistic picture (which would panic him again) and letting him keep his idealized view. In the end, she opted for something in the middle. "He does not only drink in excess. He is addicted, and she needs him to be stronger than he can be. Right now, he is pretending, and she is pretending. They are both pretending." She paused, went quiet a moment and rubbed her cheek against his fur. "She has a problem with drinking too, though she does not say it. The man named William hurt her once, badly." She sighed. "They should both move."

"They cannot," he said, absolutely. He tried to access some of Daniel's memories to bring up information about William, but Daniel was not being cooperative in this conversation in any way. The Beast was still of the opinion that they might just kill this man William because it was expedient, Daniel disagreed, and both of them ended up disgruntled, as if Daniel wasn't pissed off already. The days when they were practically one were probably gone. The Beast didn't care.

She could sense when he became disgruntled, and rubbed the tip of one of his ears between her fingertips in a soothing manner. "They do like each other very much, the man and the woman. They are just scared, and they are both too intelligent to be forthright. It does not have to turn out badly, though. We can help, you and I. I just do not know how yet," she admitted. "What does he think of her?"

"Tell me about your castle?" she finally asked, because the woman (Ella) was curious, and because she wanted to hear about him. Their time was brief, and she didn't want the others to monopolize it all, especially when so much time had been given to the vampires and their concerns.

"I am tired of talking about the man," The Beast announced to the room at large, deliberately dropping his head between his paws again and squeezing his eyes shut.

After some annoyed silence, however, he gave in to her (and her petting) and said, "It is very old. My father's father's father built it, and his father set down the plans before it could be made." He paused for a moment, trying to think of more things to say. "The village in the valley makes very good wine and they harvest it early, so it tastes very tart. It fetches a good price abroad; we float it down the river for trade."
