In the first hour that Daniel became aware that Ella was missing, his mind whirled with possibilities about where she might have gone and how she might have gotten there. He thought of work emergencies, phone errors, thoughtless trips for some small thing that might soothe her friend's distress. He put these things in the middle of his vision that he might think on them and hold the panic back, panic that had been threatening ever since he found Boyd. In the second hour, he thought of other things that would have diverted her path, horrible things, dark things. His imagination spurred the adrenaline that pulsed through him as he literally scoured the building, ruthlessly touching every mirror within his reach and ignoring even his own rules of privacy and the promises he had given.
Mostly, he saw empty rooms. The woman on the second floor was missing from her apartment, probably at work, and a dress she had hung up to dry obscured the image of her otherwise drab bathroom. He saw people pacing, shaving, dressing, walking past, talking to themselves, admiring reflections. He saw them laughing and crying and eating. He saw men and women and children as life in Bellum Letale moved on, but he did not see Ella.
In the third hour, he was more scared than he could ever remember being, and he was absolutely convinced she was dead or dying.
Time slowed. He was staring hopelessly at the mirror that showed a long view of the lobby when his shiny new phone rang. Terror jumped through every nerve at the sound of it--it was either about Ella or about Boyd. Vlad. He said something, then he said her name, and then he said they had found her and he said an apartment number.
That was all Daniel needed to hear. He shut the phone off and shoved it into his pocket, and he was out of R1 so fast that he left the door swinging. By the time he got all the way down the stairs, he was breathless and out of his mind with anxiety, and a sheen of sweat made his forehead gleam as he came through the door to 104 like a tornado. He registered the vines first, and then his eyes fixed on Ella all the way in the back of the room. He didn't see Vlad or Vaughn except as figures somewhere in the periphery of his vision, and he ignored them in his single-minded pursuit to find and protect the one he came for. He stumbled over everything in his path and drew near without thinking about anything but pulling her away from the world and anything in it that might hurt her. "Ella." It was a low keen of despair and horror, pain for her pain.
