Aiden hadn't been too bothered by the silence himself - he'd been busy thinking and seething, figuring out how to simultaneously attack and defend against what was bound to be a furious vampire - so when Katya spoke, her question caught him slightly off-guard. Its contents especially so. Fate? Did he believe in fate? That was a good question.
Oh, sure, occultism was draped in fate and destiny and related categories thereof, but he himself wasn't much of a fan of it. For years he'd believed that he was making his own way - that he was taking revenge on his own terms, for reasons of his own - and really, getting here had seemed to be the culmination of that ... but to learn that they were all apparently bound to magic and mysticism, to fables and stories, suddenly cast a whole lot of threatening doubt on his thoughts.
What if she died so that you could hunt him down?
"Not really," Aiden said, but his tone wasn't fully convinced of its words.
