WHO: Stefan and Ileana
WHAT: Talking, scolding; they’re practically the same thing.
WHERE: 1203
WHEN: Dinnertime the same day as this.
WARNINGS: Maybe some language?

Stefan emptied out the noodle contents of the paper box onto the plate. It was unnecessary, sure, and it wasn’t as if Ileana didn’t already know he wasn’t cooking. But being on the move so often meant that sit down dinners with family (for that’s what she really was) didn’t happen often. When he had an opportunity to make it so, he would.

That and eating at the table meant they were talking business. Trying to have serious conversation would be impossible when eating take out on the couch. The footsteps behind him let him know she was approaching. “Hope you’re hungry. I didn’t know what was good, so I ordered…” He looked down at the various plates of entrees. It was a mistake to wait until he was hungry to order food. He practically ordered everything. “I got a lot.” It was a good thing he had a healthy appetite on him, or they’d be eating take out for days to come.

Ileana had to admit she didn't think her plan on keeping Stefan in the dark about her comings' and goings' very well. First, she didn't think Stefan would stay that long (he never did before, she had reasoned.) Secondly, it was a conversation she never really wanted to have with anyone, especially since she knew how Stefan could get about things.

"Actually dropping cash while you're here? You feeling all right?" She teased as she sidestepped him to grab a plate. She forked a helping of noodles on to the plate as she said, "Thanks for buying dinner tonight, Stef."

He laughed and scooted to the side to offer her more space. "Guess being a frog for a day did more damage then I thought. Enjoy it while it lasts." He scopped a hefty serving of fried rice onto his own plate when she thanked him. He immediately waved the utensil at her. "Don't mention it. It's about time I started pulling my own weight around here." He hadn't exactly planned on staying very long either but things were looking long term now. Or at least, longer term.

"How... How're you feeling?" The question rolled out as nonchalantly as possible, making it easy to interpret it as just idle chit chat. But there was a slight tightness in his jaw as he looked at her and he knew she could tell what he was referring to. They hadn't exactly touched upon That Night, or the injuries she came home with. He wasn't particularly proud or happy that she was hurt while he had been sleeping or making eyes at Rosalie.

Ileana laughed as she put a serving of orange chicken on her plate. "You should turn into a frog more often. Gives you some perspective, I think," she told him with a grin. She didn't bother to protest him pulling his own weight around the apartment. It was much easier to accept some help from family than from anyone else.

When he questioned how she was, Ileana tucked her bandaged wrist in to the sleeve of her long sleeved shirt. She lifted her shoulders in a casual shrug, "Been better." She sighed and told him, "I'm healing fine -- barely even notice it anymore."

“Hey my perspective was fine as it was,” he sniffed indignantly as he scooped up a big serving of shrimp. “Besides, if I’m back in frog mode, we’re not going to be eating such fine, fine cuisine. Bugs for dinner. And no one wants that.” Granted, he hadn’t actually eaten any flies that day, but he remembered it hadn’t seemed like a bad idea.

He nodded silently as she assured him she was healing alright. She looked better since that day, so he wasn’t about to make a fuss about it, at least not a huge one. “Look, I don’t have a lot of room to say shit to you. But after that,” a pair of long chopsticks gestured to the bandage peeking out from under the fabric, “I get a little worried about you going off places I don’t know about. Something could’ve happened to you while you weren’t at Daisy’s and I wouldn’t know about it.” Sure, he hadn't known exactly where Daisy's was in the first place, but it was the principle of the matter.

"Yeah but if you were a frog, you could eat bugs for dinner. And I could find where you're currently storing your wallet you weren't using," she told him between bites of her food. Ileana sighed a little and turned towards Stefan more while he talked.

She knew he was right about not actually telling him where she was going. "You do have the right. I mean, you're living here." Well, for now he was. It could change in a week with the way Stefan worked. "I didn't want to tell you, because well..."

A moment of hesitation. "Okay so this is not the way I wanted to tell you, but when I wasn't at Daisy's. It was cause I'd be at my boyfriend's."

He opened his mouth to retort and found that none was coming. Instead he tossed her a mock glare and snapped his chopsticks at her before breaking into a grin. “You're getting too smart.” It was a compliment.

Even if she hadn’t voiced it, he knew why she was hesitant. When it came down to it, he was usually just a guest. He never stayed for very long. But these weren’t usual circumstances, and while he wouldn’t say he was staying forever, he definitely wasn’t planning on taking off just yet. The boyfriend wasn’t that big of a shock and he suspected as much, but couldn’t help but slip, “I thought you weren’t dating?” He distinctly remembered asking her if she was seeing a cop when he first got there. That counted.

“You want to sneak out with your boyfriend, that’s fine. And if his folks let you stay over, great. Just let me know who he is.” He made sure his mouth free of food before giving her a toothy grin. “Introduce me to him. Promise I won’t be too hard on him.” He imagined it wouldn’t be too difficult to give the third degree to whatever teenaged boy Ileana was seeing. Maybe even a little fun.

She didn't even attempt to hide the pleased grin that spread across her face. "Learned all my tricks from the likes of you."

Laughing a little, Ileana told him, "I never said I wasn't dating. I just wasn't dating a cop." Ileana covered her mouth to stifle her laughing when she realized Stefan thought she was dating someone her age. It wasn't even a comfortable laugh, just a laugh of realizing how awkward this revelation was going to be. Cole was even older than Stefan, which just made it more obvious that this was not going to go over quite as well as she hoped.

"Well, uhm...He doesn't really have to worry about what his folks think," she told him, "he's...a little older."

The laughing wouldn’t normally have set him on edge but something about the tone made him raise his eyebrows. “Older?” He almost set his chopsticks down but instead curled his hand around it like a fist. It was sometimes easy to forget how old Ileana was. At times he thought of her as the same age, knowing they weren’t too far apart in years. At others, she was much younger, and it took him a moment to recall that she was eighteen now.

And now she was telling him her boyfriend was little older than that. The idea that he could be as old as he was didn’t sit well but he was going to remain calm. The kid was probably twenty. Maybe twenty-one. Just old enough to drink. Stefan could handle that. He thought he could handle that. “How much older?”

Ileana didn't need to be a mind reader to know Stefan was not happy with this news tidbit. This time she really hesitated, she wondered if she could downplay Cole's age. Except, she really couldn't at all. He'd never look a day younger than his late twenties.

She could only hope he would take it well. Ten years, though, is not an amount she thinks he would be able to handle. Sipping her drink for a moment, she mumbled around the rim of the glass, "He's uhm...ten years. Older. Than me."

The chopsticks snapped in half before he even realized it. Ten. Years. Older. “What the fuck,” he muttered just a little too loudly, dropping the broken pieces to the table. “Are you fucking kidding me? You’re sneaking out to go see some fucking perv?” Ten years older! The guy was even older than him!

Ileana winced a little at the sound of the snapping chopsticks. He was taking this as well as she hoped, which meant she could possibly stop him from going down and trying to knock out Cole's teeth. A little defensive, Ileana frowned, "He isn't a pervert! We're just..kind of dating now. He's a really nice guy, Stefan."

As if it could help, she added, "I initiated it? I asked him to go out with me. And..yeah. Don't freak out."

It didn’t help much when she said she initiated it but at the very least it didn’t make matters much worse. He let out a groan of disbelief at the thought but it didn’t shift the blame off of this guy. “Doesn’t matter,” he gave a slight wave of his hand before it curled into a fist once more. “He should know better. And you know why? He's thirty fucking years old.” Rounding up but that was unimportant. “And making moves on an eighteen year old girl. I don’t think that nice is the right word for it.”

He let his hands slide upward over his face slowly, giving a long inhale before looking at her across the table. “Who is he? Where is he?” Distantly he was aware that he wasn’t giving much incentive for Ileana to spill these very important details, but he was doing his best. He hadn’t flipped the table over. He was practically on his best behavior.

Ileana gave him a withering stare across the table, shaking her head at him. "He's not thirty. He's twenty-eight. And he hasn't made any moves on me."

Shaking her head, she frowned at him, "Like I'd tell you that when you look like you're going to punch him int he face!" She exhaled slowly and leaned closer, "Please calm down, Stefan. Can we try to talk about this without you wanting to break his neck?"

“Just because he hasn’t doesn’t mean he won’t,” he glared right back at her. Whatever high ground he might have had was falling fast along with his maturity levels. “And he’s practically thirty.” Two years were like two decades at this point.

“I’m not going to—” he cut himself off as he pinched the bridge of his nose. Maybe he had been imagining knocking someone’s teeth out. “We are talking. Let’s keep talking. I’ll keep my hands to myself. Why can’t you be dating some kid your age?” The way he said it he could be talking about someone eighteen, fifteen, or ten. “And you slept there?” So many questions that he was pretty sure he didn’t want to know the answer to, and yet he couldn’t stop himself.

"If he does, it's because I want him to," Ileana shot back. If this was going to be some battle, she wasn't going to wave the white flag in it. "It's not that big of a deal he's older."

Ileana set down her fork and ran her hand through her hair. "Because I don't like a boy my age. I like him." she told him, switching to Romanian out of just frustration. "I only slept there. We only sleep and talk. It's not about sex."

Stefan barely stopped the urge to pound an angry fist on the dining room table, remembering at the very last minute that it wasn’t his to destroy. He was a guest, but he was family, and the line of what he could and could not say kept wavering. “It’s a huge deal that he’s older!”

Somehow the switch back to Romanian managed to cool his anger just a bit and soon he also had his head in his hands. “He’s too old for you,” he insisted. Even if she was the one to initiate it, someone that man’s age had no business with someone as young as Ileana. “It will become about sex,” he reminded her but just as quickly raised his hands. He never wanted to think of her in that context. “What did Esme say about this? Did she know?” Or was she keeping this boyfriend of hers from everyone?

Ileana clenched her hands back in to fits for a moment, a scowl marring her face. Finally, she slammed her palms on the table, "It's not to me! I'm the one who has to deal with this, not you."

"Esme knew. She told me to be careful and that was it." Ileana made a frustrated noise in her throat as she stood, "You have no place to tell me what I can or can't do. I like him and I am going to see him. If you learn to be reasonable, I'll tell you his name someday."

She wasn't being reasonable either and storming off to her room didn't make her look anywhere remotely mature, but it felt really good to slam the door to her bedroom as she made her exit.

Any further arguments or discussion were promptly thrown out the window once she stormed off. He opened his mouth to call after her but was immediately cut short with the loud slam of her door. If she was listening she would have heard an angry thump, his fist finally falling on the corner of the table, rattling the plates.

So much for dinner.
