Who: Boyd and Vaughn
What: A meeting
Where: Dining Hall, 1 p.m.
When: The day after this
Warnings: T.B.D.

Class that morning had been about Plato's Allegory of the Cave, and Boyd had spent most of the lecture wondering if Vaughn was like the shadows on the wall.

When class ended, she had ten minutes to walk to the dining hall, to where Vaughn would be. She didn't know why the other woman had agreed to talk to her, and she wasn't silly enough to think it was for anything good. She had theories, but none of them seemed right; something could have happened during the transformation the other night, but she didn't think so. No one had spoken of seeing Vaughn, and even Daniel seemed in better spirits.

Regardless, when Vaughn had contacted her, Boyd had agreed because any contact with the woman seemed like progress. Daniel was back from Piedmont, and Shane had too many worries right now to deal with Vaughn as well, and Rosalie was spending a lot of time with Daniel recently; it was better for Boyd to talk to the woman than for Vaughn to start focusing on any of them.

The only person she thought could handle himself around Vaughn, was Vlad. He was selfish enough to make deals, and she was starting to think that was Vaughn's game - deals. Daniel and Rosalie and Shane, they were too caring and loving; that made them too easy for Vaughn to threaten and scare.

She pulled a water bottle from her backpack, and she downed two Xanax.

And when she walked into the dining hall and looked around, it was with the knowledge that whatever was about to happen would not be good.

But it would be something. That would have to do for now.

Boyd stared for a few moments in complete and total silence.

Then, she tipped her head to the side. "You're saying that if I don't talk to Daniel, Shane or Rose. If I don't see them, or have any contact with them, then you'll leave them all be, and you'll give me the money to hand over to the Family?"

To say she sounded disbelieving would be an understatement.

"I'm not an idiot, Boyd. I know there is going to be contact with them. Considering the forum, it's a little impossible for me to make certain you aren't corresponding. But I have faith in your ability to lie from behind a keyboard." Vaughn rose from her seat and moved to Boyd's side of the table. After all, they were discussing some serious matters, it was best to keep their voices as low as possible.

"They'll suspect my involvement, naturally. But I think you'll defend me.. won't you now, Red?"

"I- you promise you'll keep your word?" She didn't edge away, refusing to show fear (again), but she was starting to worry that maybe she'd gotten Vaughn wrong. This didn't seem like it was about getting Daniel at all. "But... I thought you were in love with Daniel," she said, sounding honestly perplexed.

"What do you want me to tell them, when they ask?"

It was asked quietly, clearly half-way to agreement.

Then, "how long?"

"I'd write you a post-dated account exchange now, but I think we both know you have a bad habit of siccing that attack dog of yours on me." Boyd might not have trusted Vaughn, but the feeling was mutual. Besides, as far as Vaughn was concerned, she was the one holding all of the cards. She didn't have to prove a damn thing to Boyd, Boyd needed to prove herself to her.

"You know them best, honey. I'm sure you'll be able to come up with something they can believe. Even if it hurts them." Oh, Vaughn hoped it would hurt.

"I think six months sounds nice and even, but let's just see how it goes."

Six months.

Six months.

For everyone's safety, for freedom from the Family.

Six months... alone.

She blinked back tears. What if they forgot about her? What if- No, she couldn't think about that. Not now.

And she couldn't say no. If she did, Vaughn would hurt Rosalie, she'd send the Family after her; the Family would kill her. They wouldn't care who she was, she'd be dead.

She couldn't say no.

"And if you go back on your word? If you go near any of them - Shane, Daniel or Rosalie, I get the money," she said, trying to sound as forceful as she could. "I need a way to make sure of that."

"How do you propose to make sure of that?" Vaughn was open to input now that they were so near the goal line. Although aside from her word, which really should have been enough, she wasn't sure what she could give Boyd. She'd have to think on it.

"A contract?" she suggested, "maybe something witnessed by someone who won't say anything; someone we both trust. You got any suggestions?" she asked, trying to keep her emotions in check, but starting to fail. Even with the Xanax in her system, the thought of not seeing the only people she cared about was starting to make her panic.

"Darlin, I can tell you right now.. anyone we both know, I don't trust. As far as I'm concerned, I don't have to prove myself to you. I have no intention of going back on what I say, and you can take it as that. As for what you tell them, I know you can be creative. Tell them you're trying to help me, tell them we're lovers, tell them you've lost your goddamn mind.." Vaughn leaned a little closer, dropping her voice as a trio of students walked by, arguing over an algorithm. So close now that she was nearly whispering in Boyd's ear. "Or you can walk away from this table right now. Either way, I'm getting what I want. If it's hurtin' you, or someone you care about. You can make that choice right here."

Vaughn sat back and collected her soda from the other side of the table. "It's a one time offer, I won't make it again. Besides, what's six months to someone like you?" Boyd had been talking about how pleasantly busy she was with school and everything. Six months should be a breeze.

The closeness surprised her, made her think she'd lost track of something in this conversation, that there was something she hadn't grasped. "If you bother them, hurt them, do anything against what you promised, I get the money by forfeit," she said in a desperate sort of whisper. "You leave them alone, you don't go to the Family, you don't hurt Rose... all of it."

A pause.

A heartbeat.

"You want me to tell them I'm with you?" she asked finally.

Vaughn became distracted with her straw, nudging it around inside her soda, as if looking to strike oil. "They're going to know I'm involved.." Particularly after she'd threatened Shane with such a due date.

"So why not push for the extreme? My only stipulation is that they cannot know this is.. blackmail, for a lack of a better word. They can't know I'm holding this over you, or the deal is off. And so help me, I will bring the entire building down, if you make me." Brows rose and Vaughn took a sip from her straw, all focus on Boyd once again. It was an expression that looked as innocent as peaches and cream.

Boyd watched her play with the straw, and she stood after the other woman had finished talking. She nodded simply, because there was little else she could do. If the Family thought she or Rosalie were involved in the missing money, they would kill them; blood be damned. They wouldn't ask questions, and they might even ask Rick to do the job.

She wanted them all safe- Daniel, Rosalie, Shane. And she was fairly certain Rosalie and Daniel wouldn't even notice her absence. Shane would, but as long as she kept her word, Vaughn couldn't hurt him. "Shane ain't gonna believe me," she said knowingly. "And you can't hurt him or go after him for it," she reminded, looking down at Vaughn and her innocent expression.

"I won't go after Shane," she said while glancing up to Boyd. The words rang true as ever. Why would Vaughn need to? Seeing Shane miserable through this was the only present she'd ever ask for.

She looked down at the woman in front of her, and then she held out a hand to seal the deal. She didn't think about what it meant, not now, not here.

Vaughn took her hand tenderly. Her grip was firm when she brought those soft fingers up to her mouth for a kiss, and then she released with a smile.

And so, it was done. A lot like making a deal with the Devil, wasn't it?

The kiss, like so many other things Vaughn had done today, surprised her. Her eyes narrowed just a little, and she remembered the kiss on the couch, the almost kiss from the woman she was sure was Vaughn at the masquerade.

She leaned down, cupped the woman's cheeks, and she kissed her. It wasn't a delicate kiss, not wanting or soft, not needing or loving. It was a kiss that said she wasn't afraid of Vaughn's games, that she wouldn't cower.

She grabbed her bag off the table and hoisted it over her shoulder. Vaughn could stick her in a cage, but she wasn't sure the other woman could take it if she sang.

"See you at home, honey," she said, forcing a sweet, calm smile onto her lips.

The kiss was interesting, in that it was the last thing she'd expected. Although, Vaughn managed not to look too shocked. She gave Boyd a slim-lipped smile and a gentle incline of her head. No goodbye, just that farewell nod. She'd be seeing Boyd soon.
