Who: The Wolf and Red
What: Waking up in 1007
Where: 1007
When: 8:00 AM during Fables Plot Day, a newly named official US Holiday
Warnings: Threats to nom? But probably nothing more horrific.

The wolf had slept on the floor at the foot of Red's bed, tired from chasing her all around the building and hungry again by the time sunlight coming in through the window woke him. His fur was warm where the light had lingered before sliding up to his eyes.

He pushed himself up, stretching out and yawning. He put his paws up on the bed. Red was still sleeping. That meant she couldn't get him anything to eat.

He paced for a few minutes, bored. The door to the bedroom was shut, so he couldn't go search the apartment for more food. He began searching the room, pushing her closet door open with his body. Nothing interesting there, just more clothes. One of the longer ones smelled like blood, old, soaked into the fibers, but that was as interesting as it got.

He padded over to Red's side of the bed, watching her, waiting for her to wake up. The eyes he fixed on her were bright blue, almost human, recognizable. When she didn't wake up immediately, he nudged at her neck with his nose.

He took in the sight of her with that cloak on, remembering how she'd tricked him with it by throwing it down to the bottom of the pool. It was a strain not to let the remembered transgression spark him into another chase. His stomach was getting to the aching point of empty again.

He padded out of the bathroom and around the corner, not replying, but not destroying anything either.

She left the apartment a moment later, locking him in quietly. She hoped he wouldn't notice, but it would be dangerous if he got out as hungry as he was. She didn't trust anyone else to be as smart as her about keeping him from eating things. Somehow, she knew that was her job.

She skipped down the stairs (yes, skipped), and she skipped to the butcher shop down the block.

The butcher looked at her like she was crazy when she asked for as much fresh pig as she could carry. No, she didn't care what part. No, she didn't have a recipe she was making.

As she waited, she wondered if the wolf was tearing her apartment apart.

The wolf didn't tear apart the apartment. Much. He left claw marks on the front of the refrigerator trying to get it open, and when he found nothing he could actually eat inside, left the door hanging partway ajar. He checked under her bed, in the closet, in the bathroom (where he "accidentally" knocked the bottle of evil, hated perfume into the trash). Finally he laid down on the couch, his head resting on the armrest, watching the door. He was getting impatient. He'd never tried opening a door with a knob before, but if all else failed, he could just knock it down. It had worked for him before.

She was out of the butcher shop a few minutes later with three bags of paper wrapped pig parts. She didn't know how much wolves needed to eat, but the butcher had said she could set up a regular delivery if she liked. She'd taken his card, and she'd promised to call when she knew how much she'd need.

Things felt strange when she entered Bellum Letale, and she had a brief thought about her friends in the building, but it was gone as fast as it came. Mother and Grandmother were with her, and she had no one else. Except the woodsman, but she hadn't seen him in a very long time.

She pulled a pig's ear out of the bag with a grimace, and she unlocked the door to 1007 and threw the pig ear into the apartment.

He was on the ear almost before it hit the floor, snapping it up in a few quick bites, eyes on the door. She had three bags. This was a very good sign. He smelled blood, much more blood than there had been in the steak, and salivated. Alright, she passed. He wouldn't eat her, not today.

She slipped into the apartment and locked the door. "How much do you reckon you eat a day?" she asked, tossing him another pig's ear. "You act like you're starving, and I know better, so don't go being all dramatic just 'cause you think I don't know better."

He gnawed on the second pig's ear, considering the question as he did so. He swallowed it, then darted over to her, sniffing the bags. "I hadn't eaten in..." How long had it been? Some part of him said that was ridiculous, that he'd eaten just the day before. But that didn't sound right. He'd been wandering the forest, looking for errant children, prepared to stoop to carrion if he had to, getting desperate. "Seven days, maybe." His nose bumped against the bag, and he looked up at her. "Before the steak," he added.

"I eat as much as I can," he said. Again, a basic fact that anyone should understand.

"No," she said, pulling the bags back and turning toward the kitchen. She frowned when she saw the mess he'd made of the fridge, the door swinging open how it was. "What'd you do in here, bad dog?"

"Not a dog," he said, for what felt like the thousandth time, trailing after her with his nose a few inches from the bags. "I was looking for food."

She reached back and scratched between his ears unthinkingly. "We are gonna need to have rules, me and you," she said, putting the bags on the counter and blocking them with her body as she turned to look at him. "If I tell you that I'm gonna bring you food, you can't go tearing things up before I come. And you can't eat nothing neither."

He bowed his head a little under the scratching, ears sliding to the side. "Okay." That scratching was very, very persuasive. He could still smell the food in the bags, but it made it a little easier to wait.

She smiled at how easily he agreed. She would get him a pretty red collar, she decided as she opened one of the bags and put a big chunk of pork flank on a plate.

She set it in front of him on the floor, and she put the other bags in the fridge. She looked at him for a moment, before deciding he could not be trusted.

She grabbed a kitchen rag, and she tied it around the fridge handles. She would have to get a chain later, but that would do for now.

She shot him a stern look, emphasizing that fact.

He was ignoring her completely for the pork, and so he missed the stern look. The meat which was much bloodier than the steak she'd found the night before, and tasted much, much better as a result. The scent of it even washed away the disgusting perfume settled in his fur. He pulled at it with his teeth, tearing off long strips, not pausing for a moment in between bites. Only when he was mostly done did he look up to see what she was doing. He'd ignored the plate and gotten some blood on the kitchen tile.

She frowned at the dirty tile, and she pointed at it. "Clean that up right this second," she ordered with a imperious little stomp of her foot.

He gave her a puzzled look, swallowing the last of the pork. Not really comprehending what she wanted him to do, he licked at the floor, just to get a little more of the blood that had been left behind.

She frowned, and she shooed him out of the kitchen, all the way to the end of the tile. Then she set to cleaning the blood off the floor and washing the serving plate, and she subsequently sprayed the entire area with cinnamon scented air freshener.

Shane hovered at the edge of the tile, watching her clean the floor, backing up into the living room when she sprayed cinnamon air freshener everywhere. He sprang up onto the couch, full and perfectly happy to lay somewhere comfortable.

She frowned and she stomped over to where he was and stopped in front of him on the couch. "You realize you got blood all over your mouth?" she asked, because climbing onto a white and pink couch in such a condition was clearly unacceptable.

He licked at his muzzle with a mottle pink tongue, staring up at her. He didn't know what she wanted him to do about it. "The meat was good," he said, as if this should explain it.

"You're on my couch," she explained, sitting beside him and sulking in exasperation. "Won't you have a bath, please?"

He curled tighter around himself, muzzle resting on his paws. "No." He didn't see the need for one. He was perfectly comfortable where he was, and he wasn't too fond of the way she kept insisting on things.

He stared at her, sitting next to him. "You know," he paused. "You're very...clever. For a human girl." This was a serious compliment, and he hoped she appreciated it. But she had given him food, so he supposed she was allowed the one piece of praise.

"Of course I'm clever," she said, because she knew she was, even if no one else did. "I'm very clever, though Mother and Grandmother think I'm just a little girl and refuse to admit it." Mother and Grandmother nodded and lectured, and she was getting very good about shutting them out.

"But you still need to be clean if you're going to be my pet," she insisted.
