Who: Shane and Boyd
What: Breakfast!
Where: Le Croquembouche
When: This morning.
Warnings: TBA.

Shane was sitting in Le Croquembouche, with a coffee sitting on the table in front of him. He wasn't particularly hungry, so he'd stuck with just a plain coffee with sugar. He sat by the window with a book--a collection of fairy tales and other stories--and waited for Boyd.

Shane had spoken to Boyd only briefly over the last few days, and only on the forums. What correspondence they'd had had revolved around Vaughn, as far too many of their conversations seemed to, and hadn't lasted long. The anonymous post had come and gone, no worse, really, than usual. He'd spent the days trying, trying, trying to get himself in order.

In everything he did, every attempt he made to 'get better,' there seemed to be a specter just over his shoulder, a cruel voice. Did it really matter what he did, at this point, whether he succeeded or fell totally into a twisting, gnashing dervish of self-destruction?

The future seemed dark. Every time he took a small step in the right direction, he felt as if he still had miles to go. And what was waiting for him at the end?

Boyd didn't love him anymore. No, she wasn't in love with him, but it felt like the same thing. If he found a way to stop killing, found some other outlet, found a job that actually meant something to him, fine. But then all he would have was something marginal, something barely skimming above functional. Happiness seemed an impossibility. Nothing had ever made him happy before Boyd--why should anything make him happy after her?

Above all things, he had decided that he had no desire to be a burden to her anymore. Not to her, not to Cole, not to anyone else. He would rely on himself. He would go back to a facade of being fully functional, and try to make sure no one could tell he felt otherwise.

He felt he'd made a good start. He'd posted on the boards after the anonymous post, talked to some tenants, been social despite the fact that it was the last thing in the world he felt like doing, and struck up a conversation with a few new residents.

But he didn't hold out any kind of hope that pretending nothing was wrong would make everything smooth out. He wasn't that stupid, or that optimistic.

His path was clear. He'd do what he had to in order to convince Boyd that he was capable of getting along on his own. He'd find a way to stop killing. He'd take a college class or two--who knew? Maybe he'd even find something that would interest him, something that seemed worth his time. He'd go informant, and clear his record to make sure it could never be used against Boyd. And when she no longer felt tied to him out of pity and guilt, she could go and be happy. With Daniel, maybe, with someone else, maybe. And that, in itself, could at least bring back the satisfaction that had been missing in his life for so long.

He looked over at her, eyes flashing unsure for a moment, however brief. "Boyd," he said, a little quieter. "I don't want to talk about me. I want to hear about you." That, at least, was dead honest. He wanted nothing more than to listen to her talk, hopefully about things going right for her for a change.

She looked at him, and the uncertainty in his eyes made her own eyes go sad and guarded. She slipped her fingers away from his neck, and she slipped her good hand into his warmly. "I registered for classes today," she said quietly, glancing over at him. "I'm just auditing, but I'm a little worried I won't have any idea what they're talking about." She smiled sadly. "And I think me and Rose still ain't talking right, but I made friends with Hannah - she's on my floor, and she's the girl I know from the shelter."

He held her hand a little tighter when she mentioned being worried she wouldn't understand. "You're too smart for that to be the case," he said. "And if it's confusing, you'll catch up. You are coming in about halfway through the semester. Nobody would fault you for not being able to follow everything."

"What happened with Rosalie?" he asked. He didn't even know they hadn't been talking. "You like this girl, Hannah?" He was vaguely concerned about whether or not it was a good idea for her to be spending a lot of time with someone else who might want to unload their problems on her, but if Hannah was a good friend to her then that was really all that mattered.

She smiled when he held her hand tighter, and she looked at him trustingly. "I ain't gotta take tests this semester, so it shouldn't keep me up nights yet. I'm trying to figure out what to study. Most of the things I like I ain't gonna be able to work in, because of my drug problem and my psychiatric history," she admitted, no sign of self-pity in her voice, just honesty.

"Hannah's, she ain't as sure as I am, and she's scared, but she's got a good heart," she explained, "and she understands me in ways Rose can't." Her voice went sad when she said that, but it was the truth. "We got this officer in the building, Luther, to teach us some self defense."

He frowned a little. "Well what are you taking?" he asked. "...What do you want to do?" A pathetic question. He should know that by now, shouldn't he? The more he talked to Boyd, the more he felt he didn't know nearly enough, nearly as much as he should.

Luther. The name wasn't familiar, but at least she wasn't going to these self-defense lessons alone. "That's good," he said. "That's really important." If something were to happen to her, odds were he wouldn't be there. And no matter how fast he got there, she'd still be better off capable of defending herself instead of needing to rely on a rescue.

"Philosophy, biology and psychology," she told him, and she smiled when he asked her what she wanted to do. It might have been the most real question he'd asked her, and the fact that he thought to ask it made her go quiet and thoughtful. "I want to help people," she said, because she knew that. "People who have gone through similar things, maybe, as us? I always thought no one I talked to, no adults, understood." She realized what she was saying was dangerous, but she was finding that danger was becoming less and less of a concern with each day that passed.

He nodded. "I felt like that," he said. "It didn't matter how qualified they were to do their jobs, or how kind they were. It didn't change the fact that they hadn't seen the same things, experienced it for themselves. Maybe it would help." He shook his head. "We can't possibly be the only people who've felt that way."

She smiled and she swung his hand. "Right," she said. "I just don't know what sort of classes I should take for that," she explained, pointing toward the hospital when it came into view. "I can't tell the counselor that I wanna work with kids of dead mob families," she said honestly. "And I know no one'd give me a job with kids anyway, not with my history."

His frown deepened, but he was thoughtful. Boyd would be wonderful with kids, he was sure of it, and the idea that she'd be denied that for something that wasn't her fault troubled him. "You could probably still work with teens," he pointed out. "Small children maybe not, but that might be easier to get into. You don't have to be that specific, either. You could work with teenagers from violent homes, or ones who have a history of trauma. You should take some more psychology classes if that's what you're interested in."

She smiled at him fondly, because she knew he would think she could do anything. It was one of the reasons she was so bent on protecting him; because there was something young and trusting and good in him, underneath the need to kill and hurt. "Sugar, I got a drug addiction, and I been in a straitjacket, and I have visual hallucinations," she said, again without a touch of self-pity. "Oh, and I'm related to the biggest Mafia family in the area."

She shook her head a little. "I gotta find another way. I just don't know what yet."

He didn't quite know what to say to that, because all of that might be true, but it never affected the way he saw her, and the idea that it colored other people's opinions was just more proof of how broken the system was. It couldn't help kids who had been in their situation when they were young, and then when they were older it wouldn't let them help each other. Why anyone believed it could help anyone was absolutely beyond him.

He wished he had an answer for her, but he didn't, so he moved past it to the part of what she'd said that worried him most. "How are you doing with the pills?"

She wasn't surprised when he didn't have any advice or anything to say in regards to her quandary. She was quickly learning that everyone insisted she was too young to do anything at all, but they still expected her to figure everything out on her own. She'd also figured out that she could figure things out- maybe it took her longer than it should, but she could.

She shook her head when he asked about the pills. "I gave up," she admitted. It was too hard with no one around when the shaking and fears got too bad, but she wouldn't admit that. It sounded too needy, and she had given neediness up for Lent.

She wasn't going to get out of that one that quickly. He covered up his worry when she admitted that, instead asking, level as he could, "Why?" He felt keen disappointment--not in her, but to hear that she still wasn't doing as well as he wished she could be. He wanted her to be happy, and hearing she'd gone back to the pills was a little discouraging.

"It's real hard," she admitted, smiling at him just a little. "I see the haunts more, when I'm not all calmed by the drugs. And I think more about how it's gonna be so hard to get out of the Family, and I worry about you, and I get upset at Rose when I shouldn't, and I do real terrible with Daniel, and I get to thinking about Vaughn and what she's done. And that don't even take into account the shaking and the cramps, and I just can't think. It's like everything's going in my mind all at once, like nothing'll stop. It ain't ever quiet," she said, the last sentence almost too soft to hear; a distinct difference from the raising panic of all the words that went before it.

She looked over at him again. "Sorry you asked?"

He watched her while she spoke, slowing as they walked.

"No," he said, and it was the truth. He didn't make an effort to hide his concern. He wanted to hold her, but he couldn't, so he didn't. "Never."

He looked away from her, walking a little faster. "You need to stop worrying about me and worry more about yourself," he said. "Rosalie can handle you getting upset every once in a while, and no one expects you to be able to be friendly a hundred percent of the time. Vaughn's all empty threats, lately, and I'm starting to think she's just smart enough not to want to piss everyone off any more than she already has by hurting you." He skipped the subject of Daniel altogether, since he had nothing positive to say and doubted he could lie well enough about him to make Boyd believe him. She was far, far too good at picking his lies from his truths.

"Is there anything you can take for the withdrawal?" he asked. "Anything that helps the symptoms? And there has to be a way to get you out of the family. We should start by trying to find the money they want so much. If they get it, they'll be willing to let you go."

She smiled, and she didn't say anything until she'd tugged him into the hospital and started down the familiar walk to the outpatient area. "You think I can't do anything wrong, Shane," she told him fondly. "You never think I'm wrong, no matter what I do or say. It's not good for a girl, you know. It'll make her get real vain about things," she said playfully, giving her name to the familiar nurse at the desk.

She didn't mention the pills or the family as the nurse led them back to a small room, and she sat up on the hospital bed and tugged off her remaining mitten and shrugged off her coat. "One thing at a time, sugar," she finally said, looking at him, eyes tired.

He didn't disagree with her, since it was true, in a way. Sometimes she did things that he didn't agree with, of course, and she could be absolutely impossible, but he'd never seen that as a flaw. Well, maybe once or twice, when it had actively put her in danger. "Maybe you aren't," he said with a small smile, following behind her as she walked deeper into the hospital, sitting on a chair close to the bed.

He watched her take her mitten off, not commenting on the furrows in the skin of her other hand, nor the irony of him being here while she got antibiotics for something he'd done.

"Point taken," he said, the point more in how exhausted she looked than in her words. Right now, she looked like she might collapse if she tried to take on everything at once,

She laughed at the notion that she wasn't ever wrong, and it was a light, happy sound- something she rarely did these days.

The nurse, when she came into the room with the IV bag, was an older, matronly woman that was used to seeing Boyd come in alone, and she commented on Shane's pretty blue eyes and how good it was to see someone bring her baby girl in. For her part, Boyd just pushed up her sleeve and let the nurse hook up the bag to the picc line, and she watched Shane under her lashes with a smile.

He offered the nurse a friendly smile and a little banter in return, told her that he couldn't possibly let Boyd come in her own. But his focus was on Boyd, smiling at him with an IV hooked up to her arm. The sight was incongruous and strange and very...very her. It was nice to see her smiling, at least, nice to hear her laugh. He smiled a little, faintly--a real one, not like the wider, more palatable one he'd flashed at the nurse, and waited.

She recognized the real smile for what it was, and she pointed at him. "There, sugar. I wanna see more of that," she demanded, taking advantage of the nurse's presence and the fact that he wouldn't contradict her. "Don't you think he's got a real pretty smile?" she asked the older woman, who agreed and asked him if he wasn't too old for Boyd, albeit playfully.

His smile turned rueful when attention was called to it. "She's older than me," he said to the nurse. "Just good genes, I think." He let the implication that they were together slide. It wasn't worth dwelling on. It was an easy mistake to make.

He did as she asked, shutting the door behind the nurse after she left, before turning to face Boyd again. "You feel alright?" He couldn't say he'd ever had to deal with IV antibiotics, and he had no idea whether it was a pleasant experience or not.

He walked over to the hospital bed slowly, watching her, and settled in next to her, sitting on the edge. He didn't say anything. She had that look, like she had something in mind, and it was likely best to just keep quiet and find out what it was.
