Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:cinderella

Who: Daisy, Hannah, Li, and anyone else who feels like it
What: Moving Daisy's things
Where: Lobby and the stairwells
When: Post-lights, early afternoon
Warnings: Five flights of stairs, four letter words, three girls (to start), and etc, etc.

Daisy closed her laptop with a smile of satisfaction, pleased with her lemons-to-lemonade transformation of the afternoon. Her things were still in haphazard piles on the lobby floor but she's made a number of new friends. New York friends.

After stuffing her laptop into her back pack, she plopped herself down on the slightly dirty floor of the lobby, leaning against the wall. The elevator sat opposite of her, doors open, taunting her, teasing her, seducing her. Try me, it said, all siren-like. I swear I'll be good this time, it promised. I won't take you to the eleventh floor three times in a row, it swore.

Miffed, Daisy blinked, annoyed, then stuck out her tongue.

Hannah had pulled on a pair of jeans and a loose sweatshirt, since she'd been in her pajamas at the time of Daisy's post. After that horrible blackout all she'd wanted to do was sleep, but maybe going back out into the building would be good for her.

She hated leaving Gabriel behind, but she knew he might get hurt if they were going to be moving things up and down the stairs. So, after a very slobbery goodbye, she found herself taking the stairs down to the lobby. Once she got there she glanced around warily, her eyes falling on a woman sitting on the floor.

"Um... Daisy, right?"

Daisy jumped, guilty, but her expression immediately changed into a wide smile when she spotted the woman.

"Hey, Li or Hannah!" Scrambling to her feet, Daisy dusted off her bottom and offered her hand before catching herself. Making a face, she wiped her hand on the leg of her jeans and extended it again.

"I really appreciate this," she gushed. "Honestly, I keep thinking maybe this is a prank, like a housewarming party, only, the opposite, really..."

Li showed up a few moments later dressed in simple sweats, tennis shoes and a plain t-shirt. With the elevator broken she had a sinking suspicion she would be helping many other future residents move in and she was secretly grateful for the opportunity. Manual labor was comforting and pushed out all thought from her mind.

"Hello. I am Li!" she introduced with a smile.

Hannah accepted the hand and shook it, offering a small smile. "Hannah. Really, Daisy, it's no problem at all. I didn't have that much stuff when I moved in, so it wasn't so bad, but if I did I would've appreciated the help too."

She turned to face the newcomer, offering another smile - her face was beginning to hurt - accompanied by a wave. "I'm Hannah, and I guess we're the movers for today."

"Thankfully I don't have a lot of furniture," Daisy announced cheerfully. "I have to comb Craigslist for most of my living room." Still, she was daunted by the stacks of boxes littering the lobby and she grinned at both girls.

"Do you want to pick through the boxes for the lightest ones?"

"That is not necessary," Li offered brightly and nodding genially, "It is nice to meet you both."

Li picked up the first box she saw which was not light. Though she was petite she had a solid build and her arms were more toned than most women's. "Which room is yours again?"

It was clear Li was eager and ready to start.

"Lift with the knees," Daisy started to chide, but Li lifted the box of books as if it weighed nothing, and Daisy let out a low whistle, impressed.

"Well, I'm starting light." She hefted her box of old diary volumes -- the various versions of Merribeth -- and smiled.

"Fifth floor, apartment 504." With a resigned sigh, Daisy started up the stairs.

"Where do you two live?" She knew she shouldn't chat away her energy but she didn't want her new friends to think she was rude.

Hannah stared at the other girl - Li - for a moment before looking away, slightly ashamed that even though her build wasn't much different from her own, she was clearly much stronger.

Ever since she'd gotten out of the hospital she'd tried to get in shape, mainly to be able to defend herself, but it was still a work in progress. She let out a small sigh, picking a box that seemed to be closer to the lighter side of things.

"1004," she replied, following the other two up the stairs. "It doesn't seem too bad, so far."

"I'm in 405 so we are sort of close," Li replied, until she disappeared onto the first set of stairs. Her endurance hopefully as impressive as her strength.

"We are!" Daisy cried cheerfully -- and then Li was gone in the slight shadows of the stairwell. Daisy tried to keep but didn't want to leave Hannah behind, and so she slowed a little.

"Moving to the tenth floor this way must have been terrible," she called back over her shoulder. "I guess this is the kind of place you move in to and you never leave."

There was no way Hannah could have kept up with Li - her meds kept her in a perpetually groggy state, a rather annoying side effect that she really needed to find a way around.

"It was... tiring, yeah. But I had Gabriel to keep me company." She smiled fondly before realizing she should probably clarify. "My dog," she explained. "And... I guess. I don't plan on moving anytime soon."

Li had every intention of being social at dinner. For now it felt good to work hard. Work each muscle. Tire herself out. It kept her from thinking about the building and the strange occurrence after strange occurrence that appeared to happen on a regular basis.

She was already at the third floor.

As she trudged up the stairs, Daisy considered the likelihood of her parents hiring same-day movers to carry the rest of her stuff up; and then she digested Hannah's words.

"A dog?!" Her voice turned high and envious. "I'm so jealous! I always wanted pets, but my parents were convinced I would be allergic to them or that they'd go rabid and bite my face, but I pointed out that fish can't get rabies but my mom's got this thing about seafood, it's so bizarre..." Daisy sucked in a long breath of air and finished the set of stairs before making way up the next.

"What kind of dog?" Craning her neck, Daisy was shocked to see Li still taking the stairs at a brisk pace, the distance between them growing more and more.

Hannah hadn't been around talkative people in a while - mental patients never offered much conversation - but she found Daisy's energy surprisingly refreshing. She even managed a laugh.

"My dad was hesitant about letting me have pets at first, because he thought I'd be heartbroken when they died... but he gave in eventually. I grew up with dogs and cats, mostly, but I had the odd fish and rabbit too."

She felt almost bad for being so slow and keeping Daisy behind, and she tried to quicken her pace. "Black lab. He's not too big yet, but he's getting there."

Li continued to go at her own pace, as if purposely missing out on personal conversations about childhood. When she passed the two on the stairs she always used that split second looking chipper and productive.

"Oh, a puppy?!" Daisy sighed dramatically and she nearly tripped on the stair, only to catch herself in time.

"I guess my parents were right; pets will kill me!" Laughing at her own joke, Daisy staggered down the corridor to her apartment, waiting for Hannah.

When Li passed -- on her way back to the lobby -- Daisy shouted: "On your next trip up, stay in my apartment!" She smiled at Hannah when the other girl approached. "I don't know about you, but I need lemonade."

"Yeah, he's just a puppy." Anything to do with animals could always coax a genuine smile out of her.

She shifted the box in her arms and followed, torn between skepticism and laughter. Maybe she should find out how Daisy managed to have so much energy.

Hannah watched Li go back down to the lobby, wondering if she wanted to avoid conversation. Unfortunately, she wasn't quite as active and didn't move as quickly. "Um... that's okay, but thank you."

Shaking her head in amazement, Daisy deposited the box in the middle of her living room floor, then grinned at Hannah.

"Well, I can wait, too," and she started back down the hall to the stairwell. "Have you been living here long?" She craned her neck down the stairs, stunned to see Li halfway on her second trip up.

"You're a machine!" she shouted down to the other woman.

Li eventually made it up to the fifth floor, with two lighter boxes stacked on top of one another.

"No, just a person," she corrected modestly.

"Oh... don't let me stop you, if you want some." Hannah rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly, not used to someone being so friendly.

"No, not very long at all... I just moved in about a week ago. I wasn't exactly expecting a major power outage as my welcome." She smiled, even though she was still a little wary that the lights would go off again any second.

"I wish I were that strong," she muttered, half to herself as she watched Li carrying the boxes.

"The power went out?" Daisy's eyes were round but she grinned. "Broken elevator and power outages? It's like Rent," she declared with obvious relish. Boho poverty was an unexpected perk of this move; she was already drafting the email to her mother in which she would delicately deny suffering all the while shivering over a candle or ... something else poetic and romantic like that.

Daisy skipped a few steps on the way down, bored already with the whole moving-carrying-lifting-five-flights-of-stairs thing, and once in the lobby she attempted two boxes as Li had. Epic fail!, Darby thought, nearly dropping both boxes, and she finally settled on one.

Hannah nodded, but she didn't smile. "It was more than that, though... I couldn't see anything. This girl I ran in to, Madison - she even had a light, but there was some kind of fog, so it still didn't help."

She wasn't sure what Rent was - she was a little out of the loop culture-wise - but she did her best to seem as though she was familiar with it.

Two boxes wasn't going to work out too well, she knew, so she opted for one box instead. "The elevator isn't really broken. It's just... temperamental."

Fog. In a building. During a blackout. Privately, Daisy was in swoons; her daydream went from Rent to Wuthering Heights. But Hannah seemed to find fog inside to be bad and so Daisy just nodded, her expression serious.

"Someone mentioned the landlord isn't very friendly?"

"So I've heard. I never actually spoke to him myself, but apparently he's claimed responsibility for a man's death and made threats already." Hannah left out the fact that she had spoken to him, once - but it was only over the phone, and they hadn't talked about anything except the special rate on her apartment.

"Some people think he caused the blackout."

"He caused it?!" Daisy stopped, mid-step, and she recovered with a gasp, then waited at the landing for Hannah.

"Not really!" She was torn between real apprehension and cautious disbelief, and she studied the other girl, looking for a hint of smile or a grin to indicate she's teasing her.

Hannah hurried to catch up, glancing uncomfortably between Daisy and Li. "No, I didn't say that... it's just what some people think."

There was a brief pause before she attempted a laugh. "I mean, it couldn't have actually been him. It was probably just... faulty wiring or something."

Daisy brightened immediately. "He does sound like a jerk," she agreed, and she resumed her hike. "My parents warned me about slum lords," she started, sounding cheerful. "But I convinced my dad this place was practically a dorm, it was so safe."

"Your parents sound very protective," she commented wistfully. "They must care about you a lot."

Despite her hesitations about the landlord, she wouldn't quite call him a slum lord. He wasn't sleazy, just... strange. "Oh, no. This building-- I mean, there's penthouses and everything. I'm sure rich people wouldn't live here if it didn't meet some kind of standard."

Daisy gave Hannah an odd look, puzzled by her comment about parents. Don't all parents care a lot? Still, she didn't say it aloud; instead, she nodded and resumed her trek up the stairs.

"Are there any famous rich people here?" The landlord was immediately forgotten in the excitement of possibly brushing shoulders with New York glitterati.

Hannah shrugged, shifting the box in her grip. "Probably. Well, not in the building - except I think one of the girls might've been on tv or something once, I'm not sure. But a lot of famous people live in New York, and they film some tv shows here and such."

Daisy paused upon reaching the fifth floor to catch her breath, then she waddled down the corridor to her apartment, dropping the box with a crash. She winced: she'll have to send an apology note to her neighbors.

"I'm dying to see someone famous." She grinned sheepishly at Hannah. "I'm a little bit of a culture vulture. And people watcher." Her grin turned sharper. "And you'll have to update me on building gossip!"

Li looked almost more uncomfortable about gossip than she did about the building's more dangerous rumors. She had no stomach for it, good natured or not. She tried her best to smile, feel apart of the conversation but had very little to add. She busied herself walking, helping, lifting.

A culture what? Hannah smiled back, although it faltered slightly at the mention of building gossip.

"Oh... well, I'll try. I don't really know anyone yet, though. The anonymous posts - every other Wednesday - are full of gossip. It's not the nice sort, though. Mostly they talk about the man on the roof and a redheaded girl." She felt sort of bad for both of them, reading what people had said, even though she had no idea who they were.

"'Man on the roof and a redheaded girl'?" Daisy repeated. "Sounds like a promising romance novel." She grinned and shrugged, then started after Li, feeling guilty about how much work the other woman was doing.

"Are the other residents friendly?"

"Oh, I didn't mean-- not them together." Hannah shot an uncomfortable glance at Li, not having meant to spread any sort of gossip. Secretly she related to the redheaded girl, since people had talked about her being on medication and seeing a psychiatrist, two things she knew far too much about.

"I haven't met many people yet." After the anonymous post she couldn't bring herself to say she was sure everyone was friendly. If that was how they spoke about each other, then they were just like all the others.

Daisy nodded as both new acquaintances grew serious and she flushed a little, embarrassed by her callous curiosity.

"I'm too nosy," Daisy admitted sheepishly, and she followed Li back down the stairs, Hannah after her. If Li continued her power streak, Daisy imagined they all only had one more trip up.

"My parents are just super protective," she announced after a moment. "I was Girl-in-a-Bubble until high school, basically." She shrugged but bit her lip, nervous. "Everyone seems to have a more exciting life than me."

Hannah felt slightly guilty, since Li was clearly doing most of the work; but she didn't seem to mind very much, really.

"Li is right. There's the good kind of exciting, and then there's the... other kind." She shrugged. "Not that I know much about that, though." The girl-in-a-bubble comment hit too close to home, reminding her of the way her father had been before everything.

"That's what my parents think," Daisy sighed, and she traipsed up after Li. "Really, I don't want much. Just a little excitement." She grinned at Hannah over her shoulder. "The good kind of excitement."

Her mind chewed over the implication of 'the other kind' of excitement, though, and Daisy almost tripped again as she turned up the second flight of stairs.
