It was nice to wake up to the sound of a songbird right outside the window. Despite being in Ba Sing Se under less than happy circumstances, Iroh was adjusting to this chapter in his life rather nicely. In fact, if it had not been for his nephew's persistent hunt of the Avatar, Ba Sing Se had become a place Iroh could see Zuko and himself truly starting over. They were on solid ground, had gainful employment, no one knew who they were. It would have been perfect. Yet, the old man was not so foolish as to think their life could be perfect there.
Only last night, an illusions he had of happiness were shaken by a very public accusation form a young man. Jet, Zuko had told him the boy's name was. Jet had come into the tea shop with weapons drawn and shouting "Fire Nation!" about Iroh and Zuko. Had it not been for the support of the patrons inside the tea shop, Iroh wondered if he and Zuko would not have woken up inside a cell instead of their little apartment.
He watched his nephew now, in between making fresh pots of tea and conversing with customers. In just the short amount of time they'd been away from the Fire Navy, there had been much change in his nephew. It made his heart swell, even if he knew there was much room to grow.
Last night he'd wanted to talk to Zuko about the encounter with Jet, but Zuko stalled with an often-heard, "Not now, Uncle," and went to bed. He was gone by the time Iroh awoke and already at the tea house when he arrived that morning.
Zuko was coming back his way with an empty tray, and Iroh made himself busy with herb selection, his back turned to the room. "You know, Nephew," he said quietly, "You cannot avoid me forever." He had the feeling Zuko blamed him for Jet's assumptions, and wanted to make sure there were no bad feelings between them. "I would almost rather you yelled at me and got it over with than this cold silence. it does neither of us any good."
