He watched her turn away from him with a slight furrow of his brows, the sting showing in a flash across his eyes. He dropped his head into his hands for the briefest second, pushing his hair back before standing and moving to cross the distance between them as he halted just shy of touching her. Taking in her shoulders and the way her hair looked in the light, something was different about it.
"I couldn't. I had to figure everything out, had to find out what had caused these changes and how far they went. I needed to get the truth, before I could come back and fix things."
His hands, shaking worse than when he felt that resonance building in every cell of his being, were stilled by a slow breath he took in through his nose. Powerful, yet gentle digits rested on her shoulders momentarily..an attempt to help ease her pain and anger. But also a silent plea for forgiveness, he knew he'd hurt her..but if he could have done the right thing any other way he would have jumped at the chance. No, he was sure he had done the right thing and that now he could fix the problems in Axis City..the ones that seemed to open up like a blooming flower the day of the explosion.
"Megan, if I thought it would have helped..I would have let you know. I only did what I thought was best for you, for the both of us. I can't make up for those two years, but I can let you know I'm not going anywhere now. I've come back for you, because I love you."
The words were old and familiar, things he had thought of when he was coming back..things he had so passionately and stubbornly threw himself into. He knew he meant them. He sounded like he meant them and his hands only gently squeezed her shoulders to drive the point home, but he couldn't shake the nagging shadow of doubt in his mind..something that told him everything was not well.
