This was not the sort of eatery that Alexander Moretti would normally have attended. This was the sort of place his father had liked. Rustic, almost. A place where what was served on dishes was recognisable as food, but it was prepared by a cook, not a chef. Still, this was going to be an important hour or so, and he could not allow himself to become distracted or even to show a hint of distaste.
The boy worked here, worked this shift week-in and week-out, he had come in that morning and he had not left. The opportunity was perfect, and what he really needed to do was win the boy's trust. It would take some time, of course, but today was the first step.
He had ordered, he had eaten, he had drunk, and now he was one of only a few customers left dotted around the diner, in the quietest corner away from where onlookers might watch or try and listen-in. He wanted his bill, and he was happy to wait for it, happy to wait for a moment to talk to the boy alone, to wait for him to walk past.
And there he was. "Excuse me." He said, as the boy hurried past, "Can I have my bill?" well, he certainly didn't look up to much, thin and under-fed, tired looking and far younger than Alexander had imagined. But he was the one, the boy with the wonderful and yet unharnessed gift...
