NOW FOR THE FUN STUFF

As of... right now... everyone is allowed multiple characters. They'll need to be apped through the usual process, but there isn't a limit. It just doesn't make sense for this type of game any more.

There are no longer activity checks, points systems, GM invocations or that other good stuff that goes with large games. I'll update the site to reflect this.

Awoken is now effectively invite-only. We won't be advertising, or pushing this to anyone, and walk-ins who want to join will need to be vouched for by a member of the group. It keeps it from sprawling.

The story is still a go, plots will be smaller in size of course, but I'll be using this account to run them. I'll post up the revised course of action for the story in the next couple of days, as the thread structure was built for a bigger game.

Any questions? Suggestions? Comments? Let me have them, and glad you're all still here.

Given this is a smaller crowd, I'm happy to get an Aim chat going if people would like that, too.

Hi folks,

As most of you have gathered, we've had a bit of turbulent time here. So put it in perspective, a fair amount of players have resigned from the game, including a lot of the active ones, and most threads have stalled. So it poses a bit of a question - what to do?

Personally, I'd like to keep going, but it will be on more of a GPSL basis if we do, I think.

What does this mean? Effectively, it means we'll be dropping a lot of the trappings of a big game. So, we will no longer be advertising, but will accept applications, of course. We'll aim to keep it small among a group of dedicated players who can post frequently. We'll also be abandoning some of the mechanics in place, like the points system, the GM system and the other parts that are necessary for a big game, but less so for a small one - weekly recaps, activity checks and the like.

We'll also be allowing people to take on dedicated NPCs and multiple characters, if that's what they wish to do, on the proviso that they can keep up posting with them.

This will involve, concomitantly, a rethink in how we play. I'm happy to still post plot ideas but we won't be doing the big-scale ones. And I want people who are still here to be more involved in the main plot, even if that means rethinking it. The new format will give us flexibility to allow temporary characters as well, if that's what you want to do.

But I can't do any of this without players. So, here's a chance to stick or twist, as it were. If you still want to play in the Awoken universe, sound off below. If you don't want to, that's cool - and I also want to say thanks to all of our recently departed players, too. You guys made it fun, so thanks for playing, and the door is always open for you to return :)

I'll leave this open for a week and add those of you who want to stay to a group chat in Aim, where we can go over what we want to do.

We may return to the big-game idea in the future, if we get a resurgence in players, or if everyone wants to do it. But for now, think of this as a stop-gap measure.

Essentially, I'm in if you're in.

Hullo folks!

My name is Fern! And I'm new here! I just got back from a convention and I am very tired and worn out, but also incredibly happy and excited to be a part of this community! I look forward to talk to all of you and discuss plots, meet characters and all that good stuff.

About me? Hmm, I'm from Scotland, I like cosplaying, folk metal, larping, roleplaying (tabletop and journal!), building props, and finding fun things to keep my days filled with joy. I also have Autism, like my character.

I have just got back into journal based rp recently. This is my newest character and muse, Franklin Harrison Rivers. He is one of the Awoken, he has Aspergers, and he is a radio DJ who runs a show called "Five Nights Awake". It's pretty much targeted at Awoken more than anyone else and offers music, news (which is pretty much gossip he overhears or anything that gets brought to him), and he also does inspirational, motivational speeches. His power is Thermomancy, which means is able to control temperatures, like his own body temperature. He can manipulate fire and ice through it but can only have physical contact with those two things for short periods of time or he risks harming himself.

I'll be writing up a nice, neat biography and give more information about Franklin over time. But I want to get settled in first and discover my footing. See where things take me. You can read some things about Franklin in my application if you'd like.

Mod note: As mentioned, apologies for the absence over the past fortnight. Ronnie and I spent a week in London, came back with fond memories and a nasty head cold, so we've both been out of action. That being said, we're back in and ready to go. This week, we have a catch up of where we are in the plot, moving ahead, and details of the upcoming wyrdstorm.

I've been pretty sick, so I've been in bed for the last week or so. I'm feeling a bit better now and ready to jump into things, as it is.

Ronnie and I are heading back to the UK for a few days from this evening. We'll still be around, but on BST rather than EST.

Hey all DMS players,

A few changes are taking place in-canon that I'd like you all to be a part of, including a new storyline that will have increasing importance.

To start with, the DMS is implementing a partner system, much like the modern-day NYPD. All characters who work field assignments - so investigators, field agents etc will need one. Special Operations and Medical/Clerical don't need to, but feel free to request a partner. Also feel free to use this thread to buddy up. Out of character, it should give you guys a good way to get some threads going with one another. I'll list the current roster later in this post, but if you would prefer an NPC partner then say.

We also need a head of Internal Affairs! This character watches the watchers, so to speak, and investigates DMS agents when allegations of lawbreaking, police brutality, corruption or anything contrary to regulations is brought to their attention. They also investigate when agents are forced to kill in the line of duty.

The person isn't likely to be popular, but will be an integral part of the Department. Moving ahead, we're also hoping to involve them closely.

People can either nominate their existing characters (DMS or not, at which point that character would join the DMS) or we're potentially open to allowing a second character for this, if the person has proved they're reliable in posting and finishing threads.

Lastly, Locke needs an aide. Essentially a partner, but don't tell him that.

Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a writer of wealth and taste. Sorry, anytime I can reference Guns and Roses I kinda have to. Greetings, I'm Steph. I'm a huge nerd for all things writing and RP is my crack. I'm really excited to join the group and get to know everyone. Plus I love me some post-apocalyptic supernatural fun. But ya'll aren't here to learn about me so let's get down to business.

Let me introduce my lady Morgan Howell, her app is here with full bio pending me completing the character sheet coding BUT lemme tell you the important bits of what'll be in it!

She, her mother, and sister (I'm working on talking a friend into apping her ^_^) are originally from Rosemont, IL, a suburb of Chicago, and headed west after The Fault and the storms happened kinda decimating that area (I'm guessing this is cool since it was in her writing sample?). Morgan is a healer and this ability appeared in the weeks following the appearance of The Fault while she and her family were in Toledo, OH. In the months while they were moving around her mom passed away (For those keeping track she had 2 moms), she was diabetic and as the country descended into chaos they couldn't get her the insulin she needed. Morgan tried to help but her abilities were too new and she learned hard and fast that it doesn't work on medical conditions only injuries. The family bummed around the Ohio/Pennsylvania area for a few years before heading further west and finally ending up in New York.

Before The Fault she had her sights set on being a doctor. With all the turmoil of being Awoken she instead tried her hand at being an paramedic. It worked for a while but after a few storms and watching everyone fumble without technology she got frustrated and switched gears. She turned her focus to nature, a passion her dearly departed mom, and became an apothecary. The memory of her mom's death as a result of not having a medication her life depended on still haunted her and led her to opening a center with a few others (NPCs for now but if anyone has characters they think would work there LET A GIRL KNOW) that focuses on holistic and alternative medicine.

In terms of her powers, they can be hit or miss. 15 years later she can heal most minor wounds no problem but the deadlier the wound the harder it is. She has yet to heal any sort of fatal wound without passing out with a mega nose bleed, it's not fun but it doesn't stop her. Also she hasn't had any success trying to tackle medical conditions like her mom's diabetes, cancer, you get the idea. (Maybe some day with the First Witch about she could learn?)

SO like I said this is what I think ya'll should know, but obviously once I get her full bio up there will be TONS more in there. COME AT ME WITH YOUR IDEAS PEOPLE. I'm ready. ^_^

I am sorry to do this so quickly but I am dropping out of this game. You've all been lovely and it isn't anything about The Awoken that has me deciding to leave. I LOVE The concept. I am actually restarting a new game with some old friends and I only have time for one or the other. Thank you so MUCH for letting me in. It's probably better that this happen now before I get completely wrapped up in the big up and coming plot.

Mod note: There will not be a recap this week, partly due to time constraints on my part but also because I'm hoping to kick off some of the main plot threads today. As such, I feel things will be better served by a full recap next week, as the story hasn't moved on much since the last one.

Intel on the location of the so-called “First Witch” has been hazy up until this point, but now, the DMS has finally nailed concrete information. Reports of someone called “Old Murphy” in the old Financial District have reached the ears of the Department, and between those in the know, they think it’s likely that ‘Murphy’ is actually the one that they are looking for.

In an alarming twist, she seems to be gathering Awoken followers around her. The intel calls it a cult, but DMS leadership is worried that it might be an army. They decide to strike now, and end it before it starts.

But as the agents prepare to swarm the Witch’s territory in a display of overwhelming force, other games are at work in the shadows. The DMS’s brutal treatment of a group of Awoken caught skulking around the subways beneath the station and their rendition to the Black Site, also, may force some Awoken agents to question exactly where their sympathies lie.

Meanwhile, the Awoken themselves are presented with a proposition by the First Witch – join her, and be a part of the next evolution of their species. An attractive offer, but some aren’t quite willing to give up the power they’ve gathered here. The Witch is an apocalyptic option, and some like the world as it is – as such, they may find themselves as strange bedfellows with the DMS.

This is a main plot thread, and can accommodate as many characters that want to be a part of it as necessary - there will be action threads, and non-action threads to cater for those characters, which will be developed after final numbers are in. The rewards for completion are appropriately higher. It will run for a number of threads over the course of several weeks, and sign-ups will be open until 08/28.

This will be run by James, who will delegate plotrunning powers to volunteers involved in each thread.

NPCs: Old Murphy, the Crone of the Shattered Towers/The First Witch (mod-played)
Rewards for successful completion: 10 points per completed thread, plot completion bonus of 15 points, additional bonus for plotrunners of 10 points for the completed story. Particularly well-run parts will also gain bonus perks to be given at the discretion of the mods, which can consist of anything on the rewards list, depending on how efficiently and interestingly the threads are resolved.
Effects: This is a main plot job. The outcome and events will have a major effect on the story, and possibly on individual characters.

Hi, all! I'm Yuki, and I'm really glad I got accepted into the game to play with you all! I found this game's concept and way of running itself a breath of fresh air from all the Harry Potter crap you see all over insanejournal. I haven't played in a RPG like this for around five years or so, so I'm very rusty. (Please forgive me!) I hope to get to know you all well and we all have pretty good plots together. Forgive me if I lapse into Italian sometimes, because I just moved to Italy permanently and married my boyfriend of almost 15 years. I'm bilingual. Sorry in advance!

I play Kieran Winter, your newest member to the Awoken. She specializes in Astral Projection, and I'm trying to decide if telekinesis or telepathy would work along with it. (But I think I narrowed it down to telekinesis, just because she needs to move somehow while away from her physical body.) She's 27 and discovered her powers around a year ago, if I think about it. (Is this okay?) She's mostly comfortable in her own skin, but with other people, totally wary. She knows full well if someone kills her, her other self will have nowhere to return to. What happens then?

I'd love to have her find a tight set of friends. Nothing too big, but a couple of people that will have her back. Since she does program and work with computers a lot, she's very quiet and more observant than a big talker. However, she loves to listen to people, so she's great at that. A best friend would be great too, if it is genuinely possible in this world.

She also cares about the technology of the city and how to preserve and also update it to fit the needs of both magic users and humans alike. That isn't to say that she wants to help the government with anything like that. In fact, she would probably let herself perish first if the government actually ever captured her and demanded that she used her mind and research to benefit them.

As they say, she has enough knowledge to slip through the cracks that the government left themselves in their technology. (oops.)

I'm glad to meet you all and I can't wait to plot with you all!
