The tourney grounds blazed with light, torches and fires seeming numerous as the stars which they all but obscured. The sounds of wine-soaked laughter and courtly gossip warred with the creak of armor and the clash of steel as the knights participating donned their armor, or took their first rounds.
It was a night meant in honor of the past and the wonders now confined to legend. Fountains scattered throughout the grounds were spouting wine in place of water, and pyromancers shaped flames of wildfire that lit the air around them a striking green.
Pages and serving maids dressed in the flowing robes of Old Valyria moved through the crowd of nobles, bearing trays of sweets and delicacies brought from across the Narrow Sea. Others bore cups and pitchers of wine chilled in the icy depths of the Keep or warmed and spiced to stir the senses.
The matches were split, taking up either end of the great space as combatants were eliminated, until the last few remained. The final rounds of the mace combatants came first, moving to the center of the grounds as they fought before the king, and pages hurried forward with the torches to light the circle that marked out the edge of their fights.
When the last man had fallen, the winner's place was cleared at the king's side as the swordsmen began their final bouts...
