Who: Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes
What: Buds reunite
When: After Bucky's arrival net post
Where: Steve's apartment
Rating: Captain America Green

Steve was glad to learn that Buck had joined them all here. He seemed better, but still wary. Steve understood, and he would make certain his best friend had a safe place to live in. His apartment in Brooklyn wasn't huge, but it could accommodate them both without too much problem. While he waited for Bucky to arrive, he busied himself with making up a bed in the second bedroom.

When the knock he'd been expecting came to the door, Steve had his arms full of a couple of pillows and a mound of spare towels. He somehow managed to get the door open without dropping the whole mess. Bucky was greeted with an awkward smile. "Hey. C'mon in."

Although his time in Wakanda had done much to soothe Bucky's mind and help clear it, he was still enjoying the knowledge that they had been 'hidden' and little interaction he had to do. Counciling from Shuri, visits from T'challa, and a hard day's work in a peaceful environment without having to worry on anything else was a place he wouldn't mind staying for a long time.

Of course, there was always a fight. And as he'd learned--everything is only temporary. Easier to cope knowing that.

His only reservation on taking up Steve's offer was causing him more problems. Steve protecting him years ago had led to a lot of pain between a group of people who were once very close. Bucky had already caused enough devastation to the world. Ruining Steve's ability to start over was not something he would compromise again. Though turning down kindness was a mantra he'd committed to not doing, and after a few job inquiries around the streets he found himself at Steve's address. Backpack and Strange's goodies inside. He hesitated a moment before knocking and gave Steve a perplexed expression at the situation before him. "Hey...do you need any help?" Bucky asked as he came in and closed the door, swinging his backpack to the floor to empty his arms and help before Steve could say no.

"No, I-" but Bucky was taking things from Steve before he could finish his protest. He grimaced a little but sighed good naturedly. It was almost like old times. Those times before the war. Before Captain America and Doctor Zola. Sometimes Steve wished they could go back to those times, but he was practical. The nostalgia never lasted long.

"Fine," he said with a smirk. "You can help me make up your bed and no. It's not the couch." He jerked his head toward the hallway. "C'mon."

Steve led the way, but the place really wasn't that big. "There's only one bathroom, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem." He glanced back at Buck. "So long as you don't take hour long showers."

"The couch would have been fine, Steve." His memory was still spotty but he knew enough that they were poor looking after the poor. They made the best of life in their time. Sleeping on the floor or taking a few random pillows were better than sleeping in the mud for two hour intervals (if you could get that) in the war.

Or a yearly long slumber in a frozen ice chamber.

Bucky merely gave a low hum in response about the showers. When they had the bedroom stuff situated he glanced outside the window, glad to actually have one. "Well, you know me. I'm really worried about my...upkeep." So said the man who couldn't say when he last had a haircut or a shave.

Steve stood beside Buck and looked out over the street below, his arms loosely crossed. Growing up they didn't have windows, or at least didn't have anything of a view. He could have gotten an even better view, but Steve had told Tony no.

"It's the little things that remind us we're normal." He glanced at Buck with a slightly lopsided smirk. "Speaking of which, that pizza joint we hung out in as kids is still there. Right on the corner. They deliver."

Those wouldn't have been the words Bucky would agree with. He kept silent as usual because it was unnecessary to shoot down Steve, ever. He was always so positive. No matter how bleak. And stubborn. Bucky would never be normal and he'd grown to accept that. But he could appreciate little things, like the sunlight, and the view of said window. The company of a friend he didn't deserve.

His eyes squinted a little as he tried to remember the place Steve was talking about, eyes looking back up at him with curiosity. "Was it the one we couldn't afford toppings for?" There was something. A part of the memory singed away from the electrical pulses into his brain. "They sold the slices so cheap..but made their money on the toppings." He said under his breath in almost a sad laugh, glancing back up to Steve. Hoping he remembered correctly. "Delivery seems to be the new thing now, huh? Can you imagine it back then...like a luxury."

Steve watched Buck struggle with the memory without actually looking at him solidly. There were little signs that told Steve how his friend was really doing. There didn't seem to be any anger. Frustration, sure, but the angry denial was missing. It was good to see.

"They were always kind of snippy that we never got toppings." It had been a source of amusement for them. As far as childhood antics were concerned that was pretty tame.

"Yeah," he chuckled out. "Everyone's too busy anymore to cook or go get their food." Then he smirked. "Back then the delivery guy would have eaten half the pie before it got to its destination."

"Well look at us now. We can get all the toppings we want. And good thing too, because a pizza without mushrooms is hardly a pizza at all." Sometimes Bucky was able to scrape together some extra change so one of them could get a topping. And they could split it. They did a lot of that.

Silly boys. Always sacrificing change for food and such instead of the bus ride home. At least they had decent walks...the ones he could remember.

"I don't blame him. I know I couldn't be a delivery guy." Not with their appetite. Though today, Bucky wouldn't be stealing anything unless he needed to run for his life. That thought was pushed aside though. Because he was done running. And nothing had happened. Yet. "Alright, so are we getting this pizza or are we going to keep talking about it?" Because now he was hungry. "You can tell me all the stuff I've missed out on along the way."

Steve grinned as he looked at Bucky. "They have these things they call...bistro pizzas. They put weird things like artichokes on them. Then there's the white pizzas which are basically just dough and cheese." He shook his head. "Don't get me started on what they do to hotdogs."

His hand landed lightly on Bucky's shoulder as he nodded. "Yeah. We'll get some. Two larges."

Bucky's eyes widened larger than they usually did but it was just in a mock fashion of all the pizza possibilities. Things really weren't simple for...anything, were they? This was just pizza for crying out loud. But he wouldn't be one to complain about food. "They better have not messed with the dogs. One thing at a time now."

A small, rare smile pulled to Bucky's face and he put his right arm up on Steve's shoulder, giving him a pat. "Look at us. From two slices to two whole pizzas. You can talk while we walk. I don't want the delivery guy getting any ideas."

It was good to see Bucky smile. Steve knew how rare it was. The fact that he was seeing it all told Steve that his best friend was relaxed enough. Good. Steve always wanted to be a source of peace for Buck.

He chuckled. "Yeah, all right. Let's go."
