"I'd say 'You're welcome,' but really it's all Sam's doing," Ellen said. "He thought a party to let folks mingle when there wasn't an immediate crisis brewing was a good idea. I think he was right."
She held the door open for Jane to enter, then closed it. The buzz of conversation had grown louder, as was typical of parties. Everyone raised his or her voice to be heard over the crowd, who all did the same, and the noise level just kept rising til something shocked them all into a brief silence. Then it started again.
Jane was visibly uncomfortable. Not a party-goer, then. No surprise, really, Ellen thought. Still, she'd made the effort to show up.
"I can lead you to the bar, if you'd like a drink," she told Jane. "Or I can introduce you around. I know you know Darcy, and she's here somewhere. Whatever you'd like.
