What: Adult company, going shopping, fresh air, etc
When: Now?
Where: Costco
Status: Complete
There were very few activities in Peter’s life that he could say were ‘domestic tasks’. Sure, he tidied up and could feed himself now (thanks to Wanda, of course) and definitely knew how to do laundry (by hand, even!) but that was about it. He went to buy groceries because he had to, not because he enjoyed running errands. Errands always reminded him of those quick and dirty supply runs, trying to remember if he was banned on a certain district or star system, if he had any jilted lovers or business partners … it was exhausting. That was the beautiful thing about Terra -- anonymity. No one knew who he was and no one gave a damn. He’d bumped into various sandwich girls on occasion and they all did him a solid by pretending he didn’t exist, which was amazing and completely appreciated. Now, he enjoyed doing these menial tasks but still had no reason to really do them, or linger. With Wanda and two little ones, lingering was almost the usual speed. Not only did it take time to get the boys organized, there was their stuff, and their seats and a stroller...how did two small people take up so much space? He had no idea, but he happily took on a baby carrier. Growing up in space, he’d never had much interaction with babies ...or at all, if he really thought about it. More like from a far as in .. he knew they existed and that babies grew up to be adults but that was the extent of his infant knowledge. So here they were in Costco (also a new experience) and Peter was nodding appreciatively at the very large sizes of things. “How have I never been here before? Look at that huge bag of pretzels! That would feed Drax for at least a day, instead of a few hours...I gotta get me a membership!” Perhaps unsurprisingly, Wanda had a Costco membership - she’d gotten it after she found out she was pregnant with twins because she anticipated a lot of food in her future. Boys will be growing boys, after all, and even though the twins were still being breastfed and not quite onto solid food yet, she liked to stock up on formula just in case. And diapers. God, she couldn’t have enough diapers. It was a cute thought, to want to go the cloth diaper route but there was just no way. Not as a single mom with these two future superheroes. “Get what you want,” Wanda chuckled - Peter had Tommy in a carrier all snug against his chest, and Billy was nestled into a carrier on his mom, slung across her chest as well, while she had hands free to push the shopping cart. “I just need diapers for them and some essentials for me. Thank you for coming, by the way. I’ll take pretty much any adult interaction I can get.” She missed her friends. Missed having a normal sleep schedule and clothes without baby spit up on them too. “The only interaction I have on a regular basis is with Drax, Nebula and Tony and I don’t think any of them count as adults.” Peter also included himself in that list of non-adults, and he felt slightly flattered that Wanda thought of him as one. Grabbing a bag, he tossed it into the cart. “I’ll grab the stuff,” he said, peeking down at Tommy. The baby was looking around, face-forward, and Peter couldn’t help but reach down and let the little boy wrap his hand around Peter’s finger. “I finally got paid again, and we both know I’m super irresponsible, so better that I spend my cash on this instead of hookers and blow.” He paused for a moment and raised his brows. “Can I say blow around these kids? Am I ruining their brains talking about all the horrible things Uncle Peter does in his spare time?” He was quite enjoying being an uncle -- to Morgan, to these kiddos. Life was so weird sometimes. “Or do I need to stop swearing and shit?” Like that. Hookers and blow? She hoped he really wasn’t spending cash on that - it sounded like the beginnings of a downward spiral. “No, they do not understand you,” Wanda assured - which was probably a good thing, considering the language used. “Not until around their first birthday, I think?” At least, that was what she’d read in most child psychology books. And it was then the twins would start saying words too - which, time spent around Peter, that might mean the f-bomb would quickly be in their lexicon. Yikes. “Though I imagine time will go quickly. Already it seems like just yesterday they were born,” she sighed, consulting her list. She usually saved fresh fruit and veggies for the farmer’s market, but here she was prepared to get eggs, cheese, bread, milk, and those rotisserie chickens were so good. Also the acai bowls at the food court. She just wanted one to snack on. “You have been alright? Or do I need to teach you some more recipes now that you have one other person living there?” “Two.” Peter had no plan of attack, considering he barely knew what he was going to do in the next hour, so he was happy following Wanda and picking random items that caught his eye. Like a huge pack of already made hashbrowns. Score. “Drax came back. I guess he was bored out there with no one to gross out, so he came back. So now I’m somehow the minority.” He stretched his arms and grinned. “Since I’m the only non-blue one in the house. How does that even fu -- work?” Catching himself from swearing around the kids was going to be hard. “As a weird FYI, he loves kids and is surprisingly good with them. He’d probably talk to you about some weird alien tradition of honouring twins by dousing them in honey or something to ensure they are sticky in the face of danger. I wouldn’t recommend listening to him….he used to have a kid though. So he’s mostly okay.” Wanda’s brow wrinkled, because oh, Drax came back? She hadn’t realized. Maybe she was just too into life as a new mom - she needed more outings like this, with fresh air and actual conversation with someone who didn’t baby babble. “I will be sure to see what he has to say,” she replied, tone amused, as she found one of the rotisserie chickens she wanted and made space for it in her cart. “He can meet Billy and Tommy too, if he wants. But it does sound like you need more recipes,” she grinned. “We all have to look out for each other.” “Preach, fam.” Peter was really loving the Earth lingo. He’d been using groovy and cool and awesome for too long -- not that they were bad, but it was important to educate oneself and learn new things. Plus, it cracked him up to be unprofessional at work. “You’re doing okay? I was kinda worried about you when I was out there doing my space thing. My mom…” Peter hesitated, almost out of habit. He generally didn’t speak about his mother, but he knew he could open up with Wanda. “Well, she was a single mom, y’know and it wasn’t easy. I didn’t make it easy and I was just one boy. She didn’t have many people around her either, just my granddad.” He gave her a quirky smile. “It’s not easy to make friends when you insist your baby daddy is a starman.” “Anyways, at the risk of sounding lame, all I wanted to say was if you need anything, anytime, whatever, I’m here, hey? I don’t want you to feel alone. Our lives are fucked up enough without the parenting thing added to it.” Peter always gave off this very distinct asshole playboy, ‘don’t give a fuck’ aura - but he was actually one of the sweetest people Wanda knew. This just proved it right here - she wasn’t sure she could be any more fond of him, but hearing him talk about his mother and her struggles definitely upped the ante on that. “Perhaps you didn’t make it easy but you turned out well, and she would be very proud of you,” Wanda smiled, reaching over and giving his arm a squeeze. “Thank you though. I really appreciate that because - “ She paused, brushing some auburn bangs away from her face, continuing to push the cart toward the food cart. An acai bowl was calling her name. But words were difficult, not as easy, since she wasn’t sure how to vocalize how much she missed Vision. Still, maybe she didn’t need to. Peter got it. “I just wish Vision could meet them,” she settled on. Ugh, emotions were always so hard for Peter in that he couldn’t hide them ever. Even that brief sentence about his mother, followed by Wanda’s gentle touch had him tear up a bit. And then the sad look on her face when she mentioned Vision? Oh yeah, there were some tears. “Yeah,” he managed to sniff out. “I bet he’d be proud of them too.” Peter glanced down Tommy who looked like he was starting to doze off. “They’re freaking adorable and obviously going to be amazing human beings. So there’s that.” He glanced over at what she was holding and frowned. “A-kai? What the hell is that?” “Ah-psy,” Wanda corrected, with a sparkling little laugh. “Acai is a fruit. It’s basically a fruit smoothie mashed up with granola and banana, maybe some other fruits. And there’s syrup too.” The acai was also frozen, so it was kind of like eating sorbet of some kind - but it was delicious, and somewhat healthy (if she didn’t think of the sugar content), and Wanda couldn’t wait to dig in. “Come on, we can take a break and find a table.” The food court had some other delights - meaty ones, fattening ones, hot dog ones. Tommy could nap, and with any luck Billy would snooze too - and Wanda could enjoy her acai bowl in peace. She wouldn’t dig too much deeper into emotional topics either - no, she’d just spend some time with a friend and all would be well. |
