Plot: Time Travel!
This was supposed to go up yesterday, but your mods were not here! So, it's time to plan things out for the time travel plot.
The story so far, so everyone is caught up!
Gale Richards disappeared five or six years ago at age four in a mystery that shocked the world. Involuntary time travel has had him shuffling about the timestream for the past twenty-something years, and now he's back, he's an adult, and his sense of right and wrong can be a little skewed.
In October, Gale was unknowingly affected by Project Haze, a gaseous substance that got into New Avalon and caused some peoples' powers to jumpstart and shift. Gale's powers freaked out, and he was zapped -- while holding Dean Green -- to Scotland several centuries in the past. Gale had never taken anyone with him, and he and Dean spent six months in the past before making it home when Dean encouraged Gale (bleeding out from a bullet wound) to focus and concentrate on controlling his abilities.
As it stands now, Gale has experimented over the last few months and finds he's now capable of opening time portals, which open to the same spot he's standing at any point in the past (or future, but that's more complex). He's been disappearing for weeks at a time but coming home the same day, a fact that Dean's super not happy about.
Feeling bad that Wendy Daniels seems lonely because her powers involve being unnoticed/forgotten, Gale takes her on a whirlwind trip to 1925. To get money, Wendy uses her powers to get away with robbing a bank, and the two of them set up in a ritzy hotel room before having a schmancy dinner where Gale convinces other dinner guests that he's minor British nobility visiting family in the US. The following day, Gale takes Wendy to a hoppin' speakeasy, and accidentally lets go of her in the middle of the crowd. He forgets she's there, forgets he came here with her, and returns home to 2015 at his leisure without her.
Wendy sends Gale a letter from 1925, and it arrives ninety years later demanding that he come get her at their hotel room. Gale tries, and searches in vain, but he can't find her.
He posts about his mistake on the network, and decides the best thing to do is attempt to take Luka Romanov back in time with him, because time travel is hard and he doesn't think he can take a whole search party. Dean suggests that they use the powers of Caylie Gwynn to help boost Gale's time travel abilities and strengthen the portal, but Cal Barton is super uncool with his girlfriend being involved and goes to Vic Altman, leader of the Sentries, to find a solution.
OKAY. So, as it stands, rescuing Wendy is now a Sentries mission, much to Gale's discomfort, but no one seems comfortable with Gale leading anything.
Today (rather than yesterday, it's ok), Gale and Caylie will attempt to create a stable time portal that can allow the Sentries who opt in to go back in time to 1925. However, something will go wrong when Gale and Caylie's powers interact!
Some people that meant to go along will not go, and some random people who aren't Sentries and weren't invited to go on the mission will end up sucked into the past as well. So, if your character's not a Sentry but you really want them in on this, or your character is a Sentry and you don't want them to opt out but you also don't want them to go, this power fuckup is the way to get around it. :D
How will characters communicate in 1925?
OKAY. The Sentries have a comm system which Eric Jeffries can rig up to bounce off human software Luka Romanov as sort of a mobile hot spot. So, even if there's no internet/wifi/whatever in 1925, these comms will still work because their signals are rerouted to go through Luka. This is planned, and is done before the portal opens.
If your character is not a Sentry, either Eric or Luka can do the same thing to your cell phone when you get trapped in the past, but you have to find them. This can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be -- want them to get zapped in the past and have Luka/Eric right there to help? Awesome! Want to get zapped in the past and be stranded without any communication help? That's cool, too!
Otherwise, landline telephone calls, letters, notes are all fine methods of communicating, as well as third-person threads/logs.
Characters in 1925 will not be able to communicate with characters in 2015, and vice versa.
Who do my characters answer to?
Vic Altman is leader of the Sentries, and he's commanding officer for this. However, Gale Richards is the person responsible for allowing time travel in the first place. Heeeee doesn't have any authority, but he's the expert on both the area and how to adapt/survive with jumping into parts of the timestream.
Who gets to go?
Literally anyone you want! Because of the power fuckup, there's an IC excuse for people who shouldn't be going getting taken back in time (people who didn't even know about the mission in the first place, or people who wanted to go along but were told they can't), and people who should but whose players don't want them to for whatever reason.
Is the only mission rescuing Wendy?
No! Rescuing Wendy is the primary directive -- something may have happened to her, because Gale went looking at the specified location and couldn't locate her. I haven't talked with Jordan about this yet, but she may have been caught up in something or she may just be lost. That's up to her! :)
There's also the potential for little mini-missions, side quests, if you will. If you guys are interested I could list some plot tidbits in the comments below and ask for signups for each one? Would that be something you're interested in?
What do I do now?
Copy/paste the following form into a comment to let me know who's going back in time and anything you want to see happen, so you can start plotting with other players:
