Who: Katniss & Prim What: Enjoying Disney Where: Magic Kingdom When: backdated to Monday Warnings: nope Status: complete gdoc
Disney world. It felt like all kinds of magical to Primrose and she looked around her, wide-eyed and childlike at everything around her. She’d be lying if she did not pause on the huge castle in front of her or stare, disbelieving at the amount or roller coasters or rides available for them to try out. No, she was unaware of how this had all come to actually happen. One minute they were still in Madison Valley and the next? They were here, in what people called “Florida” and she was in Disney World, the place she had seen on television and the internet, but obviously never believed she’d be partaking in until she was actually standing in it.
The best part? She was with her sister and a few others too from Madison Valley. That part was a bit strange because it was only a select number and not the whole town like the cruise had been. That part did not make sense to Primrose, but being that she did have Katniss she could not complain about it. Still, it was odd that such a large venture like this did not include everyone. Then again, a lot of strange things had been happening in Madison lately and the most recent, aside from this, was that large clock in the sky that no one could explain. Did that have something to do with this?
Primrose looked over at her sister and she had no doubt that Katniss was probably thinking about much of the same things as herself. “It’s strange that only certain people came here with us, isn’t it Katniss?” Prim asked.
***
“It is,” Katniss agreed. She wasn’t sure what was going on. First that big clock showed up and then the next day, she woke up in a different place. She was grateful that Prim was here, but she was worried about Bellamy and Mitsuko and she knew Haymitch was worried about Darcy and Steph.
Still, she intended to make the most of this time with her sister. Disney World was touted as being the Happiest Place on Earth and that was something Prim deserved to experience. They didn’t have fairy tales with happy endings back in Panem. Or happy endings at all really. There was definitely a magical feel to this whole place, even though there was no actual magic like back in Madison Valley.
“But we’re here and that’s what matters, Little Duck,” she said, wrapping her around around Prim’s shoulders and giving them a squeeze. “What do you want to do first?”
*** The big clock had scared Primrose and then this had happened which further frightened the blond. Even if this was a good thing for them, she knew the others would worry. Especially because they could not tell them they were okay at all. She knew she would be scared if this place had taken Katniss and she found she could not reach her. She knew Haymitch was definitely not pleased about it.
“Yes, we should enjoy it though,” she agreed, nodding at her sister with a grin on her face. Oh, she hoped Katniss never stopped calling her “Little Duck”. Even though Primrose was a teenager now and not close to “Little Duck” status anymore, she still treasured the nickname. “What should we do first?” ***
Even when she was a grown woman, something Katniss had every hope would be the case in Madison Valley, she would call Prim ‘little duck’. Her sister always had been and always would be the most important person in her life. The only thing that could possibly change that would be if she had her own children, but that wasn’t really something she planned on doing.
She studied the map in her hands. “Well, we have to go through Main Street to get anywhere else, but then we can either start in Tomorrowland or Adventureland.” The idea of seeing a potential future that wasn’t bleak like Panem was interesting though could end up being kind of depressing so she’d let her sister decide which way to go first.
*** Both places that Katniss spoke of sounded interesting to Primrose. She could truthfully find herself starting with either, but obviously a choice needed to be made as to which. Putting a finger to her chin, Primrose thought for a moment. Tomorrowland or Adventureland? Tomorrowland sounded futuristic which was cool, but Primrose always liked the idea of adventure even if it did kind of intimidate her too. She had Katniss though and with her big sister with her, what could possibly happened?
“I say we do Adventureland,” Primrose spoke up finally and nodded to affirm her decision. “What do you think, Katniss?” ***
Katniss didn’t particularly care one way or the other. She was looking forward to checking out the World Showcase at Epcot, but she was content to explore whatever interested her sister first. They had no idea how long they would be here. If it was like the cruise, it would probably be a week or so. This was probably a once in a lifetime opportunity like everything else and she was happy to let Prim call the shots.
“Sounds good to me,” she said. “It looks like Main Street is mostly shops. If we want to buy souvenirs, we should do that on the way out later.” That way they wouldn’t have to lug them around all day.
*** When Katniss consented to them going to Adventureland, Primrose smiled brightly and nodded. “Yay, I can’t wait,” she replied, taking up her sister’s arm and starting toward the attraction. She wondered what they would have there and why they called it “Adventureland” in the first place. Back in Panem they had no amusement parks like this or if they did, they were reserved strictly for the wealthy. The poor had to make their own entertainment unless it was time for the Games and then, they were forced to watch them. Primrose did not consider that entertainment at all; watching people kill each other was not fun, it was sick.
“Yes, we should get some,” Primrose agreed, nodding. “Some for all the people we care about back home.” ***
“That’s a good idea,” she said. They’d gotten to take back all their souvenirs from the cruise a couple of years ago, so she was hopeful that this would be the same. She could get something for Bellamy and Mitsuko and Johanna. “Oh, look, there’s a candy store!”
Candy was still something a novelty since it had been so rare in Panem. “We’ll definitely have to stop there later.”
It was crazy how everything around here was themed. Even the doorknobs looked like Mickey Mouse ears.
*** Primrose’s eyes widened as they shifted to the candy store her sister pointed out. “Oh wow,” she replied, suddenly giddy at the idea of buying some. She’d never had sweets really until they’d come to Madison Valley. There had to be something good and different in this store though being it was Disney World. “We should buy some definitely,” Prim agreed, nodding.
“I want Mouse ears,” Prim said suddenly. “Can I have some, Katniss?” ***
Katniss seldom denied Prim anything so of course she was going to say yes. “Sure,” she said, wandering over to the store that sold a rather impressive variety of options. “Do you want one of the ones with your name? Or one of the fancy, sparkly ones?”
It seemed like everything here was going to be in excess. Even after all this time, it was hard for Katniss to get used to that and not automatically equate it with the Capitol.
*** Much like her sister, Primrose was not entirely comfortable with the obvious amount of excess that was around them right now. At home, they never experienced anything like this outside of what they saw in the Capitol and being that the Capitol was bad? Well,it tended to mean that excess was bad too. Madison Valley had given them a lot of stuff like peanut butter sandwiches and ice cream that Primrose had never dreamed of being able to have any time she wanted. Still, though it was over two years since her arrival, it all remained somewhat uncomfortable for that particular reason.
Primrose studied the hats carefully. Part of her wanted one with her name on it, but the sparkling ones were pretty and she loved how they glittered in the sunlight. “I want a sparkly one,” she said at last. ***
The decision didn’t surprise Katniss one bit. The sparkly ones were a lot more fun and Prim was still very young despite all that she’d been through. Katniss was glad that she could give her sister these kind of childhood experiences, even if they were a bit later than some kids got them. “Okay, do you want to get them now so you can wear them today?”
She had a feeling the answer to that was also going to be yes.
*** Prim might have been a teenager, but she had a distinctive childish quality about her that never quite left even with an increase in age. Some of it might have had to do with the fact that she did not have much in the way of what could be considered a “childhood” thanks to Panem, but a lot of it was in her personality. She always possessed a sense of innocence that nothing could take away...even the Games and war.
“Let’s get them now so we can wear them when we go on the rides,” Prim exclaimed happily. Despite some of the downfalls this trip did have-like leaving others behind-she was enjoying herself very much. ***
“Wait, we?” Katniss said. She hadn’t planned on getting a pair for herself, but she knew she would acquise if Prim insisted.
It was good that Prim had this chance to be a child. Katniss was never going to push her sister to change. She’d already suffered through more than most people had and she deserved to have good experiences.
*** Primrose turned and looked at her sister with a bright smile. “Yes, we,” she replied brightly before slipping hers on her head. She choose one for Katniss as well and held it out to her. “I’m ready when you are, Katniss. Let’s go have some fun,” she said brightly. She couldn’t wait to see what this place had to offer and having the opportunity to share it with her sister? It was even more perfect. ***
