Violet closed her eyes hard, squeezed them shut as if that could shut out the bad news. D was dead. Oh God, D was dead. She'd never gotten a chance to apologize to him. A chance to make amends for the things that had happened at the beach.
Victor's discussion of the other two made her ball up her hands, nails biting into her skin as she tried to push that information away too. "Kyle and Jason," she made herself say their names out loud. D Victor had known, but Kyle and Jason, he didn't seem to know them. Violet would have given Kyle her heart and she owed Jason her life. The idea of Jason as a mutant didn't surprise her, given his behavior toward both her and Kyle. It was easy to say there was something about him that sorta gave it away, but he could have just been an overly concerned (and horny) human.
"Gone." She wet her lips with the tip of her tongue and the first tear slipped out the corner of her eye. God, she'd worked so hard not to cry while she was here, not to let herself be so weak as to give in to the need. Again, she'd lost her connections, lost those she cared about. Why did this keep happening to her. "D died." There was a shocked repetition in her voice, to go with the tears running down her cheeks. At least she wasn't sobbing.
