September 11, 1996 - Unexpected Fortune
Who: Lucius, Narcissa
Where: Malfoy Manor
When: Late evening
Rating: PG

Status: Closed, completed
Summary: A stroke of luck sets the jailbird free.

The details of his escape, he thought, didn't bear discussing. They'd been unusual, and confusing, and extremely disconcerting to him. But they'd provided him with a chance to leave the custody of Azkaban prematurely, if not exactly legally.

Getting home without a wand had been a bit of a trial, but he had contacts. He had people who knew and still feared his name, even in light of his recent ... failure. He still maintained that was not his fault, but the Dark Lord didn't see it that way.

Having acquired a spare wand from a contact who'd had a couple of extras, Lucius had managed to apparate back to the Manor. It wasn't his wand, and he had every intention of replacing it as soon as possible, but it would do for now.

Knowing he looked like hell in his borrowed robes and bedraggled hair, Lucius all the same wanted to see his wife. His son, he knew, was at school, but his wife, surely, would be home.

And she'd likely want to know the details of his escape ... and he'd be happy to share them after he'd had a chance to shower and dress in something clean and his.

Moving through the manor, he peered first into the study to see if she was there; if not, he'd have to fetch one of the house elves to track her down for him ... and that would be annoying. "Narcissa?" he called softly; if she was here and within hearing range, surely she'd come. Of course, the wards might have alerted her that someone had come in, but perhaps not - they were set to allow him without being triggered.

Dipping her head she rested it against Lucius's shoulder. She had to admit it helped a lot knowing that he was with her once again. That he was going to work on the situation with Draco was even better news. At least something would hopefully be able to be done to help him. She would do anything to see her son safe and she knew Lucius felt the same way about it.

"Thank you," she whispred into his shoulder, tears forming in her eyes as her emotions finally caught up with her.

He had no idea where to begin. While he was certain the Dark Lord would have learned of his escape and guessed at his location, there was nothing to be done about that. But perhaps he could make some sort of bargain.

After all ... he'd seen a very, very interesting phenomenon in the cell he'd been in. Surely, the Dark Lord would be interested in knowing about that, wouldn't he? That people, apparently, were randomly returning from the Beyond?

A person, at any rate; he had no idea if the phenomenon was more widespread than that.

He pressed his lips to Narcissa's temple before he eased gently away from her. As pleasant as this reunion was, he did want to get into his own clothes first, and wash the accumulated dirt of his travels off of himself.

Narcissa blinked when Lucius pulled away but then realised he had just gotten back from Azkaban. "Oh!" she exclaimed bringing her hand to her mouth. "You must want a shower and something to eat," she said hitting herself for forgetting something so simple. "How about I get you something to eat while you shower and change?" she asked him

He nodded to her, offering her a quick smile. Already his mind was working; some people should be informed, some people should not be informed ... and some inquiries needed to be made.

Leaning in to steal a soft kiss from Narcissa's lips, Lucius smiled. "I'll be in the dining room in half an hour," he murmured to her as he caressed her cheek softly before he turned away.

_______

As promised, roughly half an hour later, showered and dressed in a set of his own clothing, Lucius made his way into the dining room. He'd already sent a pair of owls out to get things moving, and he offered his wife a smile as soon as he saw her.

Feeling much more like himself, he approached her, wrapping his arms around her to simply hold her tight against him. He had missed her while he'd been away. Missed her desperately.

Kissing him back she replied, "Of course, love. I will see you then," before watching him head off before getting down to business.

Narcissa had first headed to the kitchen and ordered a good sized meal for her and Lucious- not that big though, she knew that after Azkaban that too much food wouldn't be good for him but enough that it would fill him. Then she had made sure the dining room and was acceptable and then back to the kitches and then dining room... just needing to move while she waited for her husband. Finally she gave up and just paced the Dining Room.

Seeing Lucius look more like himself brought a smile to her lips. Returning his hug she was just content to stand there for as long as he wanted to. "Food or talk?" she eventually asked him lifting her head to look at him.

"Both," he replied to her with a slight smile before he eased into his chair. He did make sure the window was open enough for an owl to get in though - just in case he got a reply early.

"Strangest thing happened," he murmured as he started to eat, though he was mindful of not talking with food in his mouth. "In the cell I was confined to, someone simply appeared in it one night. Just ..." he made a slight gesture before he picked up his wine glass, taking a long sip of it. "Was there." He licked his lips. "Turns out, he'd died in that cell, and had ... come back."

He frowned. "Have you heard anything else about ..." his brows arched in silent completion to that question. He didn't imagine she had; he'd scoured the few copies of the Prophet he'd come across on his way home. He thought that people coming back from the dead would be front page news, but he hadn't caught a whiff of any news like that.

Narcissa noticed him leave the window wide enough for an Owl to get in and felt strangely pleased that he had already taken steps to insure their son's safety- for surely that was what he had sent the Owl off for.

She couldn't help but gape briefly when he told her what had occured. "How... that should be impossible," she breathed out trying to figure it all out. "Do you know who it was or when they died?" she asked curious. "It would have to have been a very strong piece of Dark Magic..." she mused softly.

Shaking her head she said, "No, this is the first time I've heard of this occurance. Perhaps he's the only one?" she suggested, "Then, that wouldn't make any sense either. If people were coming back you would expect more than just one person to come back."

"I didn't linger to ask," he said, smirking very faintly, though he shook his head slightly to her speculation. No, Voldemort was obsessed with conquering death. If he was behind this ... it wouldn't have stretched so far.

And if there was a stronger dark wizard out there, Lucius didn't want to know about it. Well, no. He did, because then he'd be strongly inclined to pledge his allegiance to that wizard.

Or witch, he supposed.

"I don't know," he finally murmured. "We'll simply have to keep an eye and ear out for any news about things of this nature." He looked thoughtful. "Owl Draco," he said quietly. "See if you can ask, obliquely, if anything unusual is happening at Hogwarts. And let him know as vaguely as you can, that I'm ... here." He certainly didn't want this being public knowledge, but he did want his son to know he was out. It would likely make the news soon enough; someone was bound to notice the man currently occupying his cell wasn't him.

Until then, though, he wanted a quiet, unmolested time.

Narcissa couldn't help but chuckle at that. She could see Lucius's reaction to the man just appearing and then taking advantage of it to get out of the god-forsaken place. Of course, Narcissa was rather curious about how they were coming back but then she didn't think of who to ask.

"Yes, I suppose we will," she said piling some food onto a plate before handing it to her husband. "I will, it might do us good to see if there has been any other news. Hogwarts was always strife with rumours of all sorts and it will be good to see how he is going. Of course, I will let him know," she said smiling. Narcissa ahd a feeling that Draco would be glad to know that Lucius was back with them.

He smiled warmly to his wife, taking a sip of his wine before glancing toward the window ... but he didn't honestly expect an answer so soon. Taking a few bites of dinner, he looked around what he could see of the dining room ... it was good to be home.

"How have things been in my ... absence?" he inquired as he lifted his eyes to meet hers.

Narcissa saw him glance towards the window and wondered who he had sent the owl to. Of course, he would tell her when the time was ready and she knew not to ask him before he was ready to tell her. She didn't mind anyway.

How had things been? Horrible? Disastrous? What to say. Eventually she said, "Not the best with everything that has been happening very stressfull..."

"I can only imagine," he murmured sympathetically. Stressful, yes. His stay in Azkaban hadn't exactly been a picnic though. Still, he was glad it was over.

Once he'd finished eating - it was nice to have home cooked meals that actually tasted like food - he leaned back and turned his eyes to his wife.

Part of him was very, very inclined to greet her properly in the bedroom, though he wondered if he shouldn't send out a few more owls first. He knew if they engaged in anything between the sheets, he'd pass out immediately after, tired as he was.

"Enough about all of this depressing stuff," Narcissa said forcing a bright smile to her lips, "It isn't worth thinking about at the moment," waving her hand in a dismissing nature.

Summoning an House Elf she had their empty plates and cups aways she turned back to her husband. "Was there..." she trailed off not sure what exactly she wanted to ask but just wanting to talk to Lucius about something.

Wasn't worth thinking about? Pale brows elevated slightly as he regarded his wife. It was unpleasant to speak of, yes, but not worth thinking about?

But he was home, now, and while he had a lot to accomplish, and a lot of things to ensure, he was home. For now, that would be enough.

"Was there?" he prompted, his brows arching up again before he rose from the table. He crossed to the window ... but the owls likely hadn't even reached their destination, let alone given the people he'd contacted enough time to do anything.

Sighing, he drew it shut; he didn't think they'd be here much longer, anyway.

Narcissa had a feeling she hadn't expressed her feelings well enough but at that very moment she didn't really care. They could come back to it at a later point.

Shaking her head, she blushed slightly. "It's nothing, love," she said, "I, I just wanted to here you talk, its reassuring to here your voice again," she whispered so softly she didn't think that he would be able to here it properly.

Lucius' expression softened slightly.

The owls, he decided, could wait. "Come then," he murmured. "We can go somewhere quieter, and I will talk to you." Grey eyes gleamed a little as he reached out for her. They could retreat to the bedroom ... and he'd talk to her, if that was all she wanted.

Though really, he was prepared to do anything she wanted. She was his wife, after all.
