And while this was initially just an art claim, after I drew these, I ended up writing a short related story, so here you go: "Edgar Hones His Parenting Skills."
"Ugh, Matron, I don't know how you manage it," Edgar gasped, throwing himself into a chair with a sigh. "All those kids of Terra's- of mine too, I suppose- they run me ragged. And between them and everything that goes into rebuilding and ruling a kingdom, I don't have a spare moment to share alone with Terra. I'm glad to have her here, you know, and in theory I didn't mind having to bring all those kids here and adopt them to do it, but our romantic life does seem seriously lacking."
Just as Matron was about to open her mouth with a quick response about Edgar's ideal romantic life, he beat her to the punch with a sly, "And this is judging by the average man's standards of romance."
"Oh, I see." She couldn't resist a laugh. Ever since he was old enough to talk, Edgar had been something of a charmer. A real character that one. "Well," she tried to put a positive spin on his current state of exhaustion, "With all the practice you're getting with the kids now, think of what an old pro you'll be by the time you and Terra have sons and daughters of your own."
As expected as that outcome was, now he blanched slightly at the thought. Changing diapers, temper tantrums, toilet training...until recently he had been so far removed from all these things that he had never truly imagined himself having to deal with them. "Matron," he turned to the older woman, putting on his brightest, fullest smile, "Please promise me you'll live a long, long time."
"So I can raise your brats just like I raised you? Ha!" she laughed, "I'd be glad to! Though I think Her Highness is going to be happy to apply herself to that task. It'll be nice to be a helper for once, not a full-time nanny."
"Oh," Edgar stroked her wrinkled hand, "Was it really so hard as all that to care for Sabin and me?"
"You don't remember the half of it, you little hellion!" she mock-scolded him. Despite all the trouble they had caused her, or perhaps even because of it, she loved both Edgar and Sabin as if they were her own sons. She only wished that Sabin would stop by more often...
"Uncle Edgar! Uncle Edgar!" yelled Samantha, running into the room and putting an end to his momentary calm, "David's gotten into your stuff again and he's chasing Tammi and Coll around with your scary mask on!"
