All the stockings had hung by the chimney with care, but several days later the mantle was bare. Hannah had invited all of her friends to her house for New Years Eve, thinking there could be no better way to remember the last year and ring in the year yet to come. After a filling dinner where they’d all sat around eating, talking, and going back for more food, the group gathered around the fire listening to the wireless and just doing what friends do best.
Hannah looked around the livingroom at her friends and smiled. This was how it was supposed to be, and she wished it never had to change. “You know, we should go out to one of those muggle places sometime – the ones with the dancing. We could get all dressed up and dance all night long. It would be grand! I bet one of my cousins know a place…or maybe one of you do? I don’t know. It just sounds like so much fun.” |

(OOC: For expediency's sake, I'm assuming that Bill and Remus arranged place and time to meet beforehand.)
It was odd; Remus had lived for many years in the Muggle world, out of sheer necessity--it was far easier to get a job among folk that didn't think anything of taking off for the full moon every month, except maybe that he was a keen astronomer. But still, somehow, sitting in a pub where not a single person had yellow robes or a purple top hat, and the glasses were not cleaning themselves, and no one was discussing the score in the latest Quidditch match--it seemed unreal, in a quaint sort of way. As if this were a place where werewolves really didn't exist, and he was just a bloke down the bar waiting for his mates to turn up.
It was a nice thought to entertain for a moment. But then, he was waiting on an Auror and a cursebreaker, and fighting a war against a wizard who didn't bloody well care whether a pub full of Muggles believed in him or not. What was, was. |

The fog of that morning had burned entirely away, and Padma cast her eyes across the lake, appreciative of the cold glare of the sun. She imagined the hanging boughs and shades of home, the secreted places of the wild where she and Parvati had often played as children, where Ammamma would inevitably discover them, moments before the setting of the sun and the darkness to follow. These remembrances fused and tenderly applied, Padma reigned in her attentions, aware of the forms and thoughts of those she and Parvati had welcomed filling the spaces between them.
She closed her eyes, and began to speak.
"Wondrous indeed is this world where one who was here yesterday may not be found today. Birth is preyed upon by death; brilliant youth by old age. Health of people is destroyed by hundreds of varied ailments of body and mind. Life is as insecure as a drop of water attached to the edge of a lotus leaf and dispersed by the wind." She paused, breath drawn chill into her lungs. "We cannot be certain of living the next moment. Days and nights are ceaselessly running, bearing away in their current the periods of life of all human beings. Like currents of rivers, these flow ceaselessly without ever turning back."
She had never been a believer, nor did her family practice in any dedication the ways that had been natural to them in generations past. Still, the words comforted, and she sorted through her memory for the phrase most fitting, the bitter and the sweet of loved ones lost.
"Birth and death are merely doors of entry and exit on the stage of this world. Therefore you should not grieve for any creature." |

It’s Hogsmeade Weekend!
Get together and have some fun! All students, years three and above, who have signed permission from a parent or guardian may go to Hogsmeade on Saturday or Sunday.
Security Measures:
Aurors and Professors will be patrolling the village. Students are not to travel to or from Hogsmeade alone, and are encouraged to stay with friends while there. Prefects have been asked to watch for signs of trouble and offer assistance to younger students. No student is allowed to leave the village except to return to Hogwarts.
All students are to return to the school by 4:30 pm. Prefects are responsible for ensuring that the students in their house and year have returned to Hogwarts (ex: Pansy & Theo for the 7th yr Slytherins), and Heads of House will be responsible for the 3rd and 4th year students from their Houses. |

In a dark corner of the Hogshead there was a large booth with several chairs pulled over, to provide additional seating. A dingy sign sat on it that read reserved.
Nearby, Hermione Granger was doing her best to blend - which meant she stuck out like a sore thumb. She had arrived early to make sure the booth had been set up properly. They were all going to meet here and talk, then go back to Hogwarts if they wanted to practice. It seemed like a good enough plan, since the Hogshead was the type of place where people didn't ask questions, and Hermione didn't trust the Three Broomsticks since the matter with Madame Rosmerta had happened. It seemed strange but it made her feel better that Aberforth was present - sort of like if a Dumbledore was near by everything would be fine, even though she knew Aberforth was not his brother. He was still a member of the Order, though, and that was always a positive thing.
Wringing her hands nervously while leaning against the wall, Hermione's attention was pulled to the door as someone came in. She hoped it was one of her friends. |
