Account codes are now required on InsaneJournal. They can be given as gifts from existing accounts (http://www.insanejournal.com/invite/) or you can purchase one by buying a paid account for an email address (which will allow you to create an account AND become a paid member).

If you want to generate new account codes, visit http://www.insanejournal.com/invite/ . Please report any bugs with the invite code system ASAP and we will resolve them asap.

  It's noted in the comments that account codes are meant to be temporary. Do you have any idea when that restriction might be lifted?
  
  I'm mainly asking because it's hard to introduce new friends or get a new cast for games running when I only have so many account codes I can share without having to switch to a paid account.
