Database maintenance

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
We will be performing maintenance during the morning (EST) tomorrow. This will cause the site to become unusable during the time that this maintenance is ongoing. We will update our Facebook and Twitter feeds with the progress as the maintenance is ongoing.

Thanks for your understanding.
  • What?

As opposed to the way the site has worked for the last few days - so slow as to be unusable most of the time - I'm not sure I'm going to notice the difference to be honest.

Is this slowness and problems with userpics going to be fixed with this maintenance?
    • That is why we are doing this, we are going to rebuild the databases during this time.
      • Well I hope it works better than the maintenance done in December.
        • dude, bring your attitude down a notch. at least he is actively working on issues with the site and going through every possible step to resolve any issues, rather than ignoring them and allowing the site to totally fall apart like gj did. we're all annoyed with the slowness and userpic stuff, but in the end it's just a website and a minor inconvenience, it's not the end of the internet.
          • I don't think it's out of order to expect reasonably good performance from a service that I pay for. I'm not asking for perfection, and I wouldn't expect this site to be running 100% all of the time.

But I do expect it to be usable.
            • many of us pay for it and, as i said, i get that it's frustrating, but the site is running just fine the majority of the time and coming down on squeaky in one of the instances when there are issues is ridiculous. you should expect, instead, that when there are issues, that everything possible is done to resolve them, not that they shouldn't exist at all. well, every time something comes up, he works pretty dang hard to resolve the issue, no matter what has to be done to achieve that resolution, and that alone makes it a dependable service. so, again, bring it down a notch. you can complain without being so condescending about it. i'd like to see you do a better job of maintaining a site like this.
              • the site is running just fine the majority of the time

Oh come on now. This slowness isn't just a recent thing. It happens all the time! There are issues all the time! Down time and slowness seems to be a recurring thing on IJ. Userpics and account creation (capchta?) often seem to go wrong too (although admittedly I haven't experienced that as much myself).

Which why I sound a little annoyed.

I know he's just one guy, and when I first came over here I didn't expect problems to get sorted out instantly, or for problems not to occur, but I did expect them to get sorted out eventually. I did expect that the site would eventually level out in terms of reliability and speed. I thought things would improve over time - maybe I was wrong in that assumption.

And again, I don't think I'm out of order to be complaining. This is a business not a charity. It's not like I'm complaining about a service he gives for free.
                • oh my god, i was trying to be patient with you, but you are seriously annoying. i never said anything about the timeline of slowness. you're not the only one that experiences it, either, but there are plenty of people who seem capable of keeping their attitudes in check rather than being rude to squeaky over it when he makes an announcement regarding the efforts he's making to fix things.

but I did expect them to get sorted out eventually

and has squeaky not continually been troubleshooting what's going on, even outright admitting whenever he's not sure why there might be a specific issue and doing whatever he can to get it resolved? common sense is a friend indeed.

i don't take issue with your being annoyed, but i do take issue with you sniping at squeaky over it like that's going to help in any way. don't bite the hand that feeds, aka the hand you made the conscious decision to pay despite knowing what issues have been had in the past few months. don't take it out on him. this isn't lj, the greater percentage of users have multitudes of free accounts here that contribute to site load, etc, and when that revenue isn't there, there's only so much that can be done in a given period of time. not once have i seen squeaky neglect any issues the site has had, ever, and this post has even been to inform people of site maintenance that's going to happen in the morning for your benefit, but yet you're sitting here being a jackoff to him. real motivational, buddy.
                  • Aw! You were trying to be patient! Thanks buddy.

And why should I keep my attitude in check? It's there because these problems never seem to get sorted out. Even when the site is working it's usually slow.

And why wouldn't he troubleshoot and do whatever he can to solve things? That isn't a favour he's doing for us. It's his job as owner of this site. InsaneJournal isn't a lovely present he's decided to give to the internet. It's a business - presumably built to make money from.

And I don't see how expecting this site to do the job it says it's going to is being a 'jackoff'.
                    • some people never know how to appreciate what others do for them. i pity you.
                    • Phrasing your complaints, however legitimate, in a bitchy way doesn't motivate anyone to fix anything. Paying for a service doesn't give you an unconditional license to snipe about it. AT&T will hang up on you if you bitch out their customer service rep.
